In ”The inflated promise of science education”, Catarina Dutilh Novaes and Silvia Ivani reject the “knowledge deficit model” of science communication, according to which the primary source of widespread anti-science attitudes is lack of knowledge of not only of what science teaches but also of how science works. On the contrary, ”the deficit model has not fared well in the face of evidence over the last two decades”: interventions based on it have not yielded the expected results in public understanding and acceptance of scientific results. They propose a shift from the one-way path of instruction and information to “reciprocal power-sharing, cooperation, and exchange” between researchers and the public.
