This was more than a celebration of my return around the sun… more than a celebration of my one year of being a self made man.. this was about community and bringing together amazing artists who inspire me every day. Some have just entered my life and others have been in my life for a very long time. Some folks weren’t caught because they had left earlier. Thank you for coming by and celebrating LIFE. This is going to continue to be a beautiful ride. So much love.

When editing the portraits I made of my father last weekend, I unconsciously selected the one that has the most in common with this self-portriat he did in the Army nearly 50 years ago, which has always been my favorite photograph of him. A happy accident.
Stunning photos of tears under a microscope vary by emotion

"The project, called "The Topography of Tears," captures unique moments in human experience, but there’s also a scientific reason why every tear looks so different. There are three different types of tears: basal (lubricating), reflex (responding to stimuli) and psychic (triggered by emotion). Each type of tear contains different organic substances, and the molecular makeup depends on the causative agent. For instance, emotional tears contain the neurotransmitter leucine enkephalin, a natural painkiller that the body releases to mitigate stress."

If I was pressed, the advice I would give is that people should try to understand the context and importance of their work. What does it all really mean? What is this about? If you don’t sit down and write it out or understand what it is that you’re doing on your own terms, you’ll be misrepresented at best and ignored at worst. Even if you’re working on a project and don’t know what it means while you’re in the throes of doing it, set aside a chunk of time afterward to digest it and figure out what you learned and what ideas were at play. That packages the project into a format that others can consume. Writing about my work has brought others to my projects and made them more accessible.

🔺[The Sleeveface Project]🔻 Still don’t know what Sleeveface is?
A photograph in which a record sleeve is intentionally placed to create the illusion of the cover art blending into the scene (especially a face or other body part on an album cover obscuring and seeming to replace the same part on a person in the photograph). Join Good Life Collective as we celebrate our official launch! We took one quirky internet meme, asked five photographers to put their spin on it, and decided to mix it up with a whole bunch of vinyl. From 8 to 9 pm, attend a special meet and greet with our talented photographers, view their artwork, and enjoy drink specials on MOVA Lounge’s rooftop!
Afterwards, DJ Quartermaine (@thequartermaine) digs deep into the crates for a soulful (and filled) vinyl party.
Time to officially #getagoodlife and find out why #sleevefaceisgood. Sunday, July 27 8 pm - 12 am MOVA Lounge 14th & W, NW Good Life Collective is comprised of three DMV’ers: Tanya Ellis (Owner, Tanya Renée Creative), Alexis Weathers (Music Blogger, Concert Material), and Torrence Swain (Owner, Crafted Cocktails DC). See you there!
