Excuse me sirā¦your handsomeness is showingā¦
Just watched Jeffreyās Babylon 5 episode and hooo man. Harriman deserved much better. Sweet little guy just wanted to be a soldier and had that stripped away. I honestly wish he had more episodes because my goodness I absolutely love him.
By the way, should I make a Jeffrey Combs fan blog
how about Harriman Gray from Bab5?

I havenāt even watched his Babylon 5 episode yet and I just KNOW from what I read that Harriman Gray is a dedicated sweetheart who would rock the bedroom, mentally and physically.
Iām gonna need like 10 minutes. I just watched Doctor Mordrid for the first time and needless to say I love the charmingly awkward sorcererā¦

Permission to gush/ramble/share headcanons in regards to Herbert West? Iām taking a tolerance break from The Herbā¢ļø and my brain is going at the speed of Mach Zoom and I need to rambleā¦
Herbert likes to laugh. Heās selective about who he indulges in laughter with, because quite often his sense of humor is mistaken for maliciousness or sarcasm, but that couldnāt be further from the truth. When he chooses to laugh heās feeling genuine joy and a connection with the person heās with.
Thanksā¦
Real shizz though, I love playing with the idea of Crawford being Herbertās brother. Younger or older, depends on the mood.
And I also love how you mentioned Herbert being obsessed with his serum because he doesnāt want to lose anyone else dear to him. And in turn, he will do just about anything to keep the very few people he has close to him, which brings me to the Gloria resuscitation scene in Bride.
He couldāve walked away, or even botch the attempt to resuscitate, but he didnāt because he knew Dan was attached to her and he and Dan were both falling apart on the inside with their feuds and tension. Herbert may not have been attached to Gloria, but he WANTED to save her to make Dan happy and trust him once more so they can continue their partnership in their work. Even when her death is called and he tells Dan to go home, you can just see the tenderness and sympathy in his eyes. Dan essentially has Herbertās heart in his hands, just like Dan entrusted Megās (literal) heart, and in turn Danās as well, in Herbertās hands.
Wow that was a mouthfulā¦
Iāve seen so many wonderful, beautifully written fics that fall short in one egregious way.
They portray Herbert as emotionless. Incapable of understanding feelings or expressing them.
I believe Herbert is a deeply emotional being. He doesnāt express them in ways that are readily understood, and he certainly expressed them in ways that could be considered unhealthy, but the more you look, the more you see just how deeply he feels.
Why is he so obsessed with eliminating death? To become immortal? For fame and fortune? He sneers at fame and glory chasers, and has no contingency in place to ensure his own reanimation.
The answer lies in his reaction to Danās declaration that heās moving out. The instant heartache, fear, and desperation. He canāt lose Dan. He cares about Dan. Herbert cares. Deeply.
YES!! THANK YOU!!!
Thatās why I see sooo much of myself in Jeffās portrayal of Herbert! He took a bland, one note mad scientist trope from a chaptered short story and turned him into a beautifully human and flawed and emotional character. He goes through fear, desperation, amusement, annoyance, and so much more.
And letās not forget the unused scene with Hill hypnotizing Herbert and talking down on Gruber. He shed tears of grief and vulnerability, and I swear you can see him physically deflate as you see the fading hope as well. Then it shifts to anger, rage even when we get to the shovel scene.
Another thing I love is how Herbert is curious to a fault. Combined with his impulsive tendencies, his curiosity is really what catalyzes the events of the films.
Backing up a bit to you talking about him being disgusted with fame and glory chasers. Absolutely true, and thatās why he chooses his words carefully when he and Dan are in the basement after the incident with Rufus. I believe Herbert senses Danās overwhelming empathy and likewise curiosity, which is why he wanted to show the effects of the serum on Rufus. He found Rufus dead (I personally believe he didnāt kill him), he knew Dan loved the cat, and knew it would be the perfect way to get him on his side.
I actually have something I wrote down in my notes regarding something like this if youāre interestedā¦
If Iām interested?? Yes, please! I think I found a kindred spirit today.
Iām with you on Rufus. I think they kept his passing ambiguous because at this point weāre viewing Herbert through Danās lens, and Dan doesnāt trust him yet. He hears Herbert saying one thing and Meg accusing Herbert of another thing, and Dan doesnāt know what really happened, which is why we donāt either.
I choose to believe Herbert, because Herbert doesnāt hurt what Dan loves. Herbert loathed Meg. But when it came down to it, he rushed in to help rescue her. He was heartbroken when Dan took up with Francesca, but he never touched her.
Was he sad the cat died? No. Would he risk hurting Dan? No.
And YES! That deleted scene with Hill⦠only Hillās threat to Danās life snapped him out of the hypnosis. His love for Dan was stronger than his admiration of his mentor or the threat to his work.
I hated that they cut that scene, because it makes Herbert look manipulative when he mentions the threat to Dan later on.
Since you wanna see my notes, prepare thy posterior! Also this was taken from a discussion with my bestie and we got into some more nitty-grit.
āSo, letās run with the novelization that Herbert is indeed an orphan who bounced from foster home to foster home. I feel like part of the reason he seems so detached from people, yet also latches onto people he finds fascinating and trustworthy, is because of that. Foster homes can be nests full of abuse in many ways, hence why he seems emotionally, sexually, and socially repressed. When he finally does find someone he can look up to and see as a parental figure, I.E. Gruber, that figure is snatched away from him in a horrific way even when he tried to talk him out of the experiment. Flash forward to when he meets Dan. Dan is kind, dedicated, and brilliant, everything Herbert would want in a professional and romantic/sexual partner. And because of him withdrawing so far back in his younger years, it slingshots him into this attachment and dependency on Dan because he DESPERATELY WANTS what he missed out on and be considered a good person. Herbert wants to better mankind, and heās incredibly flawed and neurodivergent coded. He doesnāt know how to be ānormalā because he was never around normalcy in the first place.ā
So can I just say first of all, yes. Yes to this.
Herbertās codependency reeks of trauma, as does his obsession with defeating death. It was the death of his parents that dropped the first domino, and he couldnāt do anything to prevent it. Heās been chasing control over loss ever since, in more ways than one.
Thank goodness, a kindred spirit.
And I know the scene where Herbert injects reagent into his arm was scrapped and Jeff doesnāt like it, but I think the underlying premise is a good one to discuss. Relying on something stimulating and regulating, even if it hurts down the line, so he doesnāt fall flat on his face and fail. A need to control his circumstances to find that sanctuary, balance, and stabilityā¦
What if he was black sheep or even the scapegoat of his blood family/foster family?
Being a human dartboard like that can and will cause a person to view themselves in a negative light. In Herbertās case, itās likely that his negative light manifested as being reserved and spiteful towards his naysayers. If he canāt triumph over those who said he canāt do it, then what else does he have? The likely answer: emptiness and loss of purpose.
