Ben is chaotic. Ben never puts appointments in his calendar (“if he was meant to remember he would, Will.”) EXCEPT! his nieces weekly tea party (for formal important tea party reasons not because he would ever forget) just to stay on brand.

This is made infinitely better by the fact that you know when Ben gets invited anywhere he makes a show out of checking his calendar, humming and hawing to himself before going, "Can't, I'm booked full that afternoon." Then he flips his phone around and shows his entire weekly schedule, where he has multiple three hour blocks that are set aside for the extremely important tea parties. He simply cannot reschedule. And even if he could, why would he? Seems like a waste of time

Author’s Note || For anyone who might be new here, @veuliee​ sent me a concept that I kinda uh, tripped over my own feet and plunged face first into and that’s the story of how I started writing a Hunger Games AU for Triple Frontier. Things got unbelievably crazy once I started work, and I’ve had some pretty unhealthy work/home boundaries with being virtual. I’m trying to establish some healthier limits and make more time for my writing, and this seemed like a good enough starting point. That and the outlines for the rest of this fic are still staring at me and demanding to be written.

You gotta read and watch some old books and films that aren’t 100% modern politically correct. I’m not saying you should agree with everything in them but you need to learn where genres came from to understand what those genres are doing today and where media deconstructing old tropes is coming from.

Also, more often than you might think, they’re not actually promoting bigotry so much as “didn’t consider all the implications of something” or just used words that were polite then but considered offensive now.

Could anyone make this movie today? No. Was it important when it was made? Yes.

What I mean by that is that you couldn't make Blazing Saddles today bc the thing it is parodying - spaghetti westerns - was completely ubiquitous at the time and it's now just... gone.

And it's gone in part bc Blazing Saddles skewered it so entirely.

Mel Brooks continues to have a career - History of the World Part II just came out last year - and he continues to make the same kind of work. He's just skewering entirely different types of media - "prestige TV" was a big one for HotWp2 - and continuing to punch up.

You can make that kind of art, still. You just have to know where to hit.
