This is a gentle but firm reminder that today is World Aids Day. Every year on December 1st, it’s an opportunity for people all around the world to unite in the fight against HIV. Show your support & sympathy to the people who are living with HIV/AIDS by wearing the red ribbon. Remember all the wonderful people we’ve lost to an AIDS related illness.
HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed more than 32 million lives so far. However, with increasing access to effective HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care, including for opportunistic infections, HIV infection has become a manageable chronic health condition, enabling people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives.
The following numbers are from the WHO
37,900,000 estimated number of people living with HIV at the end of 2018
1,700,000 people were newly infected with HIV in 2018
770,000 people died of HIV-related causes in 2018
500,000 target number of new cases and deaths per year by 2020
