not to go off but as a queer person i have literally never shipped a single m/m or f/f pairing solely because it was “representation” and i feel good in betting that most other queer people in fandom haven’t either.

i ship characters who have interesting dynamics in canon. i ship characters who i think would have interesting dynamics if they’d ever met in canon or had their relationship develop differently. i ship characters because i’m interested in how they would interact if they were in this universe rather than that one, if they had this background rather than their canon one, if they’d met in another way than they did in canon. i even ship characters because – gaspshockhorror – i think they’d be hot together and i want to read about them fucking because contrary to current opinion in some corners of fandom, getting turned on by fiction and doing something as nasty as masturbating to it is not a hetero exclusive activity.

i ship a lot of things for a lot of reasons but none of those reasons has ever been “i ship it because it’s gay and only because it’s gay because i like seeing other gays in fiction and there is nothing about this pairing or these characters beyond their gayness that appeals to me” and the idea that that is the motivation for why most queer people ship what we ship is just…extremely outlandish to me, just like y’all’s fake woke fandom posts stating that “queer people like queer ships for representation and straight people only like them for shallow reasons” wherein liking a ship for any reason other than it being Rep is ‘shallow’ is also outlandish.

people have a lot of motivations for shipping certain pairings and your average queer person’s motivation is usually not that different from your average straight person’s motivation because people in general are not actually that different, regardless of what their sexuality is. sometimes that motivation is deep enough to write long-ass essays over, sometimes it literally just boils down to “this one is BIG and the other one isn’t and it would be hot if the big one crushed the other one with their pelvis”, but rarely ever is someone’s motivation for shipping 100% ONLY about the character’s sexuality and nothing else about them or their (potential or canon) relationship. nobody would ship two pieces of cardboard just because i wrote the word ‘gay’ down on both of them and likewise, most of us are not shipping characters solely because the ship is queer with no thought to those characters’ personalities or dynamics whatsoever.
