"Mirkwood would judge Legolas so hard for Gimli-" Wrong. Gimly has consistently charmed the pants off every single elf he's come across. The elves of Lothlorien went from wanting to kick him out to loving him in like 2 days. He's Galadriel's special little guy. My man is out there singlehandedly tearing down centuries of prejudice because he's just so damn charming. When he was nearing the end, he didn't even go to Durin's halls - he just went with Legolas to the undying lands so he could hang out with elves for the rest of time. Gimli would have Thranduil and the rest of the elves of Mirkwood wrapped around his dwarven finger in a week's time. Ideal son in law except for the beard.

Woman sitting on rock by the sea by Williamina Parrish 1915
I couldn't sleep much last night because Pain so instead I was thinking about Elrond at 2 am as I am wont to do.
Specifically I was thinking on the bit in Lost Tales about how mariners and wayfarers are called "sons of Eärendel". My sleep deprived brain was rotating this plus my headcanon that Elrond actually kind of hates/fears the ocean (because of some mix of Sirion trauma and abandonment issues).
Just... one son of Eärendil being a sailor and hero like his father and founding a sea kingdom. It becoming accepted folklore that if a beam of Eärendil's light falls on a newborn they will grow up to be a wanderer. Eärendil's legacy being so associated with mariners and the sea.
And then the other son, unsure of his place in this legacy. Not feeling like a real son of Eärendil because of this visceral fear he can't control. Who just wants peace for once and not adventure, who wants nothing more than to stay in one place, ideally far from the sea, who panics at the sound of waves and feels guilty every time.

babes I have somewhat beaten writers block for another chapter of The Ghost You Dress Up As. not well. but it's gonna need a minute to catch its breath before round 2
My favorite scenes in the LotR books are the ones where Legolas has vital information and just decides it's not important to share.
Like when Gandalf spent literal PAGES trying to figure out why the vibes were off in Moria and Legolas chimes in with just "it's a balrog :) that shit's evil :) we're so fucked :)" like what do you MEAN you knew already and just didn't tell him??
Or at the beginning of Two Towers when Aragorn thinks there's something nearby so he puts his ear to the ground to listen, and then like 10 minutes later is like "hmmm i hear horses" and Legolas is just like "mm yep. there are 105 blond bitches with spears" like you just let your friend put his face in the dirt and you can SEE them??
Legolas please gain a sense of urgency
It's because legolas hasn't spent enough time with non-elves to remember that they don't know what he knows.
gandalf is scratching his head in moria, and legolas is thinking "oh man, the wizard noticed something off *besides* the obvious balrog that we all are aware of??"
"I wonder what aragorn is listening for? must be hard to hear, what with all of the horses. How many horses are there, actually? 1... 2... 3..."
"What do your elvish eyes see?" is Aragorn saying, as politely as possible, "Because the REST OF US are at a significant disadvantage, Prince Dipshit."
“He died then in the dark, in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, whose great tower he himself had built.”
when i tell you, i am sat here sobbing because Finrod Felagund died in the fucking dark.
