6920. Angel hates authority and following orders. She mostly tolerated HIVE Academy because it was a place to stay and refine her skills, but after it collapsed she was more than happy to go alone. She only joined the BoE to get the Titans out of the way and planned on leaving the moment the job was finished. Her lack of interest in working as a team or listening to a leader ended up saving her in a sense, as she had no reservations about leaving when things were going poorly for the BoE in the final fight.

See-More's shape language and design is so so interesting to me btw. I know it's probably just because the TT design team didn't put a TON of assets into designing a background character that would show up for maybe 20 minutes total screen time throughout the show, but so much about his design points toward him being Not A Villain. (See-More design analysis + diagrams under the cut)

First is just his shape language. See-More is made up a lot of SUPER rounded shapes (USUALLY used in a design to communicate friendliness/safety in a character), especially in his head region. Not only that, but his entire design flows in a way to constantly lead your eyes back to those rounded shapes. Because of the Teen Titans art style, his body is built in a kind of inverted triangle, leading your eyes to naturally flow back up to his head. His head shape, his eye, his helmet, the side pieces to his helmet, even his emblem are all perfect or nearly perfect circles.

And then his color scheme tells the viewer that he's good-aligned too. White is NOT a color usually used in a villain design unless done sparingly/intentionally, and when used it's usually a pure white. More than half of See-More's costume is that off white color that's usually used to indicate honor/purity. And while green CAN definitely be used in a villain design, the specific shade of See-More's green accents also doesn't read as threatening/villain aligned. His greens are all forest green, sage green, indian green, depending on the lighting. His greens have a duller tone, usually used to communicate safety or non-threat in a character.

And what's even more interesting is that See-More in unique in these design choices. Try putting him next to Gizmo. Gizmo shares a lot of these traits- rounded shapes, greens, nonthreatening body type, but Gizmo's design is tweaked JUST enough to intentionally make him more threatening as a villain. Gizmo's circles are stretched just enough to make them a more oval shape, even so far as to make his head more of a rounded square. His greens are more olive green, darker than See-More's and also richer, less gray. His accents being just black/dark gray in some scenes also gives his colors more of an edge. And unlike See-More's design, which leads you back to the circles of his head, Gizmo's stubby square body leads your eyes back to his middle, where more of these rectangles and squares are, shape language used to imply stability and rigidity (fitting for his no-nonsense, stubborn personality traits).

And then these differences are exemplified by the people who make up See-More's team. There are a LOT of screenshots where See-More is featured in frame standing next to Jinx or Kyd Wykkyd, which make him stick out like a sore thumb even MORE because both of those characters' shape language and color schemes are designed to communicate how threatening they are. With Jinx and Kyd's harsh triangle shapes and dark color schemes it's impossible for a viewer to recognize them as anything OTHER than antagonists. Even Billy, who is probably just below See-More on the morality-based-off-of-design chart, makes See-More stick out, with his rectangle shapes and black accents.

I doubt any of this was super purposeful for a background character, but it's fun to take notice of, and even more fun to take advantage of. If you write See-More as being good aligned or even defecting to a hero team, it makes his design seem more purposeful or even subconscious in that even as a villain, a part of him always remained good. If you write him as being just as if not more clever and antagonistic than his peers (like I do), then it gives the design a new, more purposeful meaning by using the language to communicate safety when he's actually a decent threat, like just another clever trick of his.

There's also more to be said about how Lightspeed is the only episode where See-More was really given a lot of attention, an episode that can be mostly framed from Jinx's perspective. If you wanted to look at the hive five's design as reflections of how Jinx herself sees them, it gives you even more of an introspective look into her relationships with them. (See-More IS safety/goodness to her, Kyd has given her reason to see him as being threatening, Mammoth is strength and stability with his rectangle/square shapes, but he's also familiar and comforting with how rounded they all are.)

This all amounts to nothing of course because See-More IS a side character with probably no real plans made for him, but his design is such an enigma to me and I love thinking about it.

I’m working on the draft for my HIVE fanfic and I came up with backstories and other stuff for the HIVE5 and I didn’t want to just let them marinate in my notes until I finally wrote the fic so headcanon time. I know nothing about the comics Teen Titans or the Fearsome Five but who cares. Also I’m not good at writing my thoughts down so this is a DUMP. (I will reveal my AO3 once I finally manage to write something of value for this idea…)

HIVE Head-canons

Jinx

Jinx was born with vitiligo (+ darker skin) and her birth awakened her meta-human powers.

The vitiligo manifested in a skull shape pattern on her face. Her parents were highly superstitious, and saw the skull as an omen and abandoned her. She was later taken in as a ward of the HIVE and raised by them. Jinx never knew the true meaning of family or love, only evil and retribution.

Her upbringing sets her apart from her peers, who came into the HIVE through trafficking, abduction, or orphanages. They miss their families.

Seemore

Seemore was born into poverty in a secluded village to a single parent.

He inherited his powers from his mother, who was a meta-human with heightened intelligence and ability to manipulate electro-magnetic fields. HIVE sent forces all over the world to seek out meta-humans, one such place was his village. His mother refused to join the HIVE and was killed for it. Seemore was lost in the chaos and ended up in an orphanage until HIVE finally located him and took him in.

Seemore would remain unaware about HIVE’s presence in his past until later, assuming his mother was murdered by an anti-metahuman group.

Billy Numerous

Billy grew up on a farm in uhh I haven’t decided what state yet so its Texas for now.

His powers awakened at an early age, and he used it to help his parents out with farm work. Billy had two brothers and a single sister. One day, his home was brutally destroyed in a fight between an unnamed Hero and Villain (latter is most likely from TBOE). His entire family was killed, leaving him and his little sister. She was sent to an orphanage, sans Billy who was too old. He was left homeless, until HIVE took him in. When he went back for his sister, she was gone.

He knows he will never stop looking for her. But at the end of the day, he’s alone, with only himself as company.

Kyd Wykkyd (Keir Nghiêm)

Before Raven, Trigon was betrothed to another greater demon, a dragoness.

Their child would be powerful. But the dragoness fell in love for another, a human (or lesser demon I haven’t decided which would make Trigon more mad). Together they had a child. Trigon was enraged. He banished Kyd’s parents to a dead realm and cursed the child to never speak again. Lost and confused, Keir wandered the earth until he was captured by traffickers. He was then bought out by HIVE.

He hates to remember something he can’t make sense of, or even speak of.

Mammoth

Ahhhh this one is hard, I’ll come back to Mammoth when I read more on the comics with him and Shimmer. If I had to make something up, he probably got separated from Shimmer (his sister) and wants to find her (not knowing that HIVE was involved in her disappearance).

Gizmo

ALSO a WIP since he has comic renditions. But if I ALSO had to make something up, he was made in a lab in an effort to replicate the meta-gene artificially. He never had a mother, father, family, he was simply created. Gizmo was raised in an artificial, controlled environment. He turned out to be a mild success, being a meta with INSANE intelligence at eight years old, but intelligence was not the target. HIVE wanted powerful soldiers.

BONUS

Jinx attended the academy because her parents abandoned her out of superstition and she was offered refuge. The other members of H5 had no choice, as they were either orphaned, abducted, trafficked, etc. This is why they didn’t want to be big league villains in that one episode (Lightspeed). They were victims of villainy and evil.

Pssst, I came up with a name for Kyd! I really disliked “Elliot Knight” so I made my own. Keir is Gaelic for “dark/black” and Nghiêm is Viet for “strict/stern”. I’m gonna work on some names for Billy and Seemore later. I might also make some art for this post, especially Jinx’s design and maybe some others.

Random thing but I think of Kyd Wykkyd being androgynous (like me).

I will 100% find a way to incorporate Private HIVE (mmmm hunk) into my fanfic for all the PH fans out there. Just… pray for me.

Also if Kyd WAS Trigon’s super powerful kid he would’ve just eaten him.

Rambling (and template) under the cut!

CURRENT FAV: Cyborg / Most underrated character ever. I miss him, I think his arc and design are both amazing, there's just so much there to work with. Plus he's an overall cool guy with interesting relationships with the others (especially Robin, Raven and Jinx)

COMFORT CHARACTER: Beast Boy / He was my intense favorite before the H.I.V.E. Five appeared, so he's the one I come back to when I'm stuck. He's weird and funny and extremely puntable. 10/10 love this guy

FAV DESIGN: Jinx / I'm sorry her design is so cool. I was considering putting her in the "favorite by plot" box because I really like her redemption arc (as rushed as it may be), but she is DEFINETELY my favorite to draw. Decided to go with her canon design rather than my own to stick to the theme. But the bat wing shoulder drape, and the choker, and the HORNS. I love her so much

FAV PLOT: Bumblebee / Was gonna put Raven here but honestly Bee's undercover arc is so fun, and her transition into the leader of Titans East is super awesome. I've liked Bumblebee in most of her other appearances, so her presence here was a given.

ALL-TIME FAV: See-More / I don't know how I got attached to him, I don't know why I like him so much, get me out of here.

GUILTY FAV: Kyd Wykkyd / Literally just an edgy bat kid with a cape. There's so much potential in him though, and somehow he's made it into my top 5 characters of all time. I've always felt a little weird about liking him but luckily there are others that are as insane about them as I am! :D

LITERALLY ME: Aqualad / Can't explain it. I just relate to him a lot lmao, wish they did more with his character in the show

FIRST FAV: Robin / Ahh yes, the Cool Hero Guy was my first favorite. Not really sure why, I've never been super attached to him as a character, but he's got a good arc and he has killed someone so I get it.

FRIEND'S FAV: Starfire / Best friend really likes awkward teenage girl characters. This is definetely a pattern.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Billy Numerous, Angel, XL Terrestrial, Blackfire, Terra, Kitten

I gotta ask- what do you imagine Kyd and Angels relationship to be? A lot of people ship them, which I’m fine with, but personally I think it would be really interesting for them to be siblings. They’ve got similar stuff going on with their eyes, and the idea of their powers and theming being opposites despite being related just interests me.

I also find it interesting how, despite seeming close in the academy, they don’t share a team upon leaving it. Which raises some questions about their relationship. Is the idea of them being close just conjecture, and him saving her in the collapse was just the two of them grabbing whoever was closest? If they were friends, are they on bad terms post-academy?

My personal headcanon is that she was hoping Wykkyd would come with her and they’d be a duo, but he felt more inclined towards a large group (despite seemingly being antisocial), and she would rather tough it on her own than be lost in a group. After all, isn’t the point of graduating making a name for yourself? Also she probably has crazy beef with Jinx or some shit and would feel SO vindicated after Jinx’s redemption lmfao

I'm not opposed to AngelKyd canon, although it's very stereotypical devil/angel pairing, it's very cute! i can see them being their first crushes, although i am definitely biased on other pairings since they are like each other's opposites its kinda uncanny. honestly, besides that one panel of kyd wykkyd helping angel escape, i see almost no interaction between them, which makes me sad!

for angel being on her own "toughing it out" has been my main influence in how i represent angel in my art! i find her to be headstrong and very ambitious, but definitely knows how to get dirty when it calls for it. the hc of her beef with jinx is SO canon, since she was probably suffering from second place syndrome. her saltiness only grew especially after learning that jinx threw it all away to be a titan LOL.

as opposed to kyd wykkyd, i was more inclined to see that he prefers to take the passanger seat rather than being the driver. despite his first impression, he's very expressive which was really intresting choice. i like to think that he's a very "go with the flow" type of person, if not slightly michevious when he wants to be. him being mute is my personal hc of a disability he has, and probably likes being around a lot of people as to not feel lonely. i'd imagine that one of the hive five members reached out to him if he wanted to join, he would just shrug and that was it.

with them being seperated, it gave me a vibe of friends going off to do seperate things post-grad where they would hang out from time to time but ultimately do their own thing.

my interpretation of their relationship during the academy had always been "the judgemental pair that are always gossiping to each other in the corner" with angel being the yapper and kyd being the listener. angel being head-willed, cheerful, and opinionated as opposed to kyd wykkyd's animated gestures and expressions (which makes up for his lack of speech). i think they balance out each other nicely. points for comedic effect if they're toxic bffs.

i honestly LOVE if the idea of them being a duo and i think that it's a CRIME we never see them battling together.
