I know Edwin's family is often portrayed as extremely traditional and cold. But I honestly like the headcanon where his parents are two loving weirdos. Almost mad scientists, misunderstood by everyone around them. This gives the boys at school another "reason" to bully Edwin: they think his parents are weird, which means he's weird too, and they might be jealous when they see that they don't mind their son's "weirdness" and actively encourage him to continue being "weird."

And this still creates a certain gulf between them. His parents' behavior affects Edwin's social life, and he can be angry at them for it: "Society condemns them, but they still continue to be like this, and then they condemn me!"

Edwin's parents can even be eccentrics among scientists themselves. Too passionate about their subject. And the husband allows his wife and son to do who knows what! How can this be?

It will be such a contrast between "cheerful, open parents" and "the closed, cold son, embarrassed by them"
