Under videos and articles about how the hantavirus outbreak is possibly spreading for person to person and they’re having to do contact tracing for several sick passengers who flew publicly and now there is a French guy who possibly caught it from sharing a plane with the elderly woman who died, there are my fellow Americans saying shit like “Maybe I’ll take up violin this lockdown.” or “I don’t want to do the whole quarantine thing again :(” it is so cute that you think that we will have a lockdown to inhibit/slow viral spread. It’s adorable that you think this administration will take any sort of measures to stop the outbreak of a (far more deadly than COVID) virus, especially since they’re refusing to acknowledge the measles outbreak. The U.S. is no longer part of the WHO. The right has spent the last 6 years sowing the seeds of medical mistrust and toxic individualism to the degree that a large portion of the population will never comply with masking and quarantining mandates under any circumstances. Lockdown was terrible for the general public’s mental health and terrible for the economy but it slowed the spread and protected the vulnerable. These anti-science troglodytes coughing on everyone else at Walmart and dying will be even worse for our mental health and even worse for the economy. Minor correction, the start of gamergate was based around a different reporter, Zoe Quinn, but they were both absolutely violently threatened over their involvement in video game criticism and development. A hate campaign was started by Quinn's ex-boyfriend when he wrote a post falsely accusing them of dating video game journalists in order to receive positive reviews on their own game, Depression Quest, which led other bad actors to accuse all women in the industry (Zoe identified as female at the time) of perceived sexual immorality. Anita Sarkeesian's brilliant Youtube series Tropes vs Women in Video Games (which everyone should watch, right now) sparked a particular nerve for criticizing popular games of killing and/or victimizing any important female character (there is a CHILLING bit that borders on ludicrous where she describes the plots of a seemingly endless parades of games as "In [title], [male player character's] wife dies, and you then have to rescue [his] daughter."). That series did actually make a huge change in the industry, especially when touted by progressive legacy developers like Tim Schafer (Monkey Island, Psychonauts), who went on to expand hiring in his company to front women and minority voices, but the shift didn't really show for a long time and echoes of the sexism that plagues the industry at its core are still rampant.

Google Chrome has been installing an AI model on users devices without their consent.

C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\OptGuideOnDeviceModel\weights.bin

OKAY SO. If you, like me, are stuck using Chrome for work reasons (I use firefox for everything else), here's what you should actually do:

On Google Chrome, type in chrome://settings and hit Enter. Using the search bar on this page, run a search for "AI". I don't care that you've done this in the past already, they quiet added the shitty option recently. Scroll almost ALL the way down and look for the On-device AI option, and toggle it off. The bastard's on by default.

Just to be safe, you can go through all the OTHER hits you got on that search and turn anything fishy off. Yes, this includes the spellcheck and grammar check in some instances. It's wild. You know how people keep complaining that Google gives them shitty "corrections" these days? It's crowdsourced AI, and no longer a dictionary and grammar ruleset. Unfortunately this is powered by the way people write, and people are not good at writing unless they are professionals. Anyway.

Now that you've turned off the On-device AI, go back to the search bar on Chrome and type in chrome://flags and hit enter. This will bring you to Chrome's bullshit experimental features, most of which are on by Default without asking. Fun!

Using the search bar on this page, search for "Enables Optimization Guide on Device" and set it to Disabled, then look for "Prompt API" and set both options to Disabled.

If you know what you're doing, run a search for AI AND a search for Gemini and Disable anything that looks off to you. If you don't know what you're doing, maybe don't touch anything if you're not sure what it does xD

Now that you've toggled those options off, you're going to want to open Windows Explorer and type in %LocalAppData% and follow the path @pirateprincessjess noted: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\OptGuideOnDeviceModel\[DATE]\

Delete the weights.bin file from this folder and clear your recycle bin

DO NOTE, if you DON'T turn off the On-device AI option from the settings as I explained in step one, the malware weights.bin file will redownload itself. I know this because it happened to me and I had to go digging.

If you followed every step here, you should be good!

I did all of this yesterday after finding that the 4GB file had redownloaded itself onto my computer and I've been monitoring my appdata folder since (it's been clean so far after a full 8 hours of work!). Still, it might be a good idea to keep checking back just in case Google tries to pull some kind of new shit without our knowledge.

YES I know that getting rid of Chrome altogether is the best option. Some of us can't. This is the workaround for that. Fuck Google and fuck Google Chrome.

OH, and don't use any Chromium-based browsers either. That's most browsers, by the way.

If you can switch to Firefox, do so now. Don't wait. It takes two minutes to migrate, you have access to a ton of extensions for privacy, and it has a built-in AI killswitch now. It will import all of your bookmarks and stuff. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

So on my posts about racism or transmisogyny, I often see tags that basically say “I don’t understand this but I’m going to reblog it anyway.” If you see a “social justice” type post that you want to reblog but don’t understand?

Don’t.

I know this goes against everything you’re used to hearing on this website, but listen. Reblogging posts you don’t understand is basically the equivalent of blindly repeating whatever you’re told. Even if you’re right, if you don’t understand why you’re right, you could be spouting utter bullshit and you wouldn’t even know it.

When I see “I don’t know what this means but I’m gonna reblog it anyway” it sends a lot of messages. It says that you care more about seeming right than being right. It says that you want good ally credit without any of the work of being a good ally. It says you’re on my side because I can make a post sound good, not because you actually agree with me on anything beyond the surface level.

So instead of just reblogging that post, save it for later. Like it, draft it, bookmark it, whatever. Go to the op’s blog and skim through a couple of pages, see if you can find some context. If the post is old, you could try asking for context in a non-condescending way. “Is this post referring to something specific?” is a lot better than, say, “Does this even happen? I’ve never heard of this.”

If that doesn’t help, do some more research. Google, search tumblr tags for recent posts on a subject, ask people who have EXPLICITLY stated they are willing to educate. Maybe in the process you’ll find more posts with a similar message to the original, but in easier to understand language. Maybe someone else already added a reply that adds useful information onto the op.

And maybe all of that takes a long time. Maybe, by the time you finally understand what the post was talking about, it’s months old and no longer relevant. Maybe you don’t even want to reblog it anymore. Who cares, fuck that post. You learned and grew as a person. That’s more important than looking good on a blog.
