Unbidden Farewell

She nodded against him held him close, âIt feels like it is my fault. I should have just listened to you. You told me not to go far off. Maybe if I would have stuck around with you and Sam it would have been alright.â She broke again sobbing as he spoke an apology, âdonât, donât blame yourself for this.â She said sitting up the most movement she had done since she crawled into bed. She pulled his face to look at her, wiping the tears from his eyes. âDonât you do that, Dean Winchester.âÂ
Her bottom lip quivering as she took him in, âBaby. This is not your fault either.â She shook her head, holding his between her hands. She bit her lip her jaw trembling as she looked at him. âMaybe we should get out of here for a little while. You know it will be a while before another hunt pops up. Maybe we should just get away.â She broke again looking at him.Â
That kid could have had his eyes, it could have looked just like him. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she looked at him and ran her fingers through his hair before laying back down and pulling him down with her, tucking them both under the blanket and tucking herself against him. Her fingers gently running through his hair, across his skin, against his stubble, before she could even bring herself to press a gentle kiss to his lips. She tucked her head under his chin and pressed herself against him. âI feel like this is supposed to be the time when one of us says, we survived worse but⊠I donât think we have.âÂ
Dean couldnât keep from shaking his head as she spoke, as they exchanged tears and shallow breaths. He pulled his bottom lip between his teeth the way he did, chewing on it and working the raw skin there. It wasnât his fault, she was right. He didnât know any better than she, yet, he couldnât ignore the rock in his stomach. The guilt turned his guts, made his throat dry.
âI should have kept you safe.â A pathetic sounding laugh followed. âItâs been my one rule, since day one. Keep you safe. And I-â He looked toward the ceiling, cursing the heavy tears weighing his lids. âI couldnât even do that.â
The bed groaned beneath him as he shifted to her weight leaning into him. He held her tight against his chest and drew in a deep breath. âYouâre right, though. When have we ever been able to catch a break?â He leaned back to find her eyes. âMaybe we take one for ourselves. Get away from all..â He trailed off, careful of his next words. âJust get away from the bad.â
