“We could, but I think it would be unwise for me and a guaranteed loss,” DJ said with a twinge of guilt to his words. Football had always been foundational to his relationship with Darius, and now he had to sit before one of his closest friends and admit to the two-timing he had been doing.

“I’ve been all consumed by the world cup. It’s stolen every ounce of my focus.” There it was, his shameful secret -- he had chosen soccer over football. “Next round’s on me if you can forgive my trifling ass ways.”

“I did not think that you would,” he laughed as he began to follow DJ toward where the alcohol was being sold. He knew the would not have turned down the same offer. “I’ve heard that they have Halloween themed cocktails and I’m definitely intrigued.” Darius admitted to his friend.

Chuckling, he shook his head, “You know I am not at all surprised by that,” he raised his brow as DJ spoke, “Did you have something in mind or are we just winging that something simply batshit, borderline bone-chilling has to happen?” He repeated what DJ said, getting in line for the drinks.

“Well. I need that. Whatever is in it, I’m sold.” Adventurous or just plain stupid? As per usual, DJ straddled the line of both as he went with his whims, and those whims were leading him directly to a one night only beverage that would most likely taste abysmal.

“You know me.” He says, with a gentle bump of his shoulder against Darius’ just before they found themselves at the front of the drinks queue. He orders something called a Vampire’s Kiss and hopes that’s indicative of his night ahead, a playful smirk on his face as he waits until after his friend has ordered to answer him. “Well... I did pass by an abandoned house on my way here that had an energy that was so sinister I swear a chill ran down my spine just from looking at it. Are you down to explore it with me?”

“One hundred percent, probably the Cha Cha Slide.” Which makes her happy because she does want to see a mass of costumed beings break out in simultaneous dance. “Now I’m hoping that they do.” Her eyes flick towards the DJ and then her friend who is more serious than she is pleased.

Her laugh barely makes it out of her mouth before its washed away by the sound of the music and chatter around them. “You need to tell me in advance because I’m gonna want to video tape it.” But there was only so long someone like her could last without jumping in. “Maybe we can start and people will join us. I love dancing.”

He’s formulating a game plan in his mind, tapping into some previously unsourced mastery to figure out how best to get his singular desire despite the DJ playing for the enjoyment of the crowd as a whole. If that was selfish, he didn’t wish to examine it too deeply.

Something he did wish to examine was Gabi’s love of dancing. Without pause, he held a hand out to her and gestured towards the dance floor that was already being enthusiastically utilised.

"Say less. Let’s hit the floor then, Hot Stuff.”

Nodding along, “actually a better time than I originally thought I would,” Alma requested the two dress up as Wanda and Vision from the Marvel series and to make her happy, he obliged, hoping that the two could get back to where they once were with each other. Chuckling, “yeah, that’s my wife actually,” he leaned back looking over at the stranger, “I guess it’s a good thing I look like that, right?”

Theo knew he was in love with Alma, no longer did he have doubts in his mind about how he felt. However, he knew Alma was looking for a way out, ready for the moment the five years between them were up. He was just thankful to have these moments with her before they ended.

“That’s your wife?” DJ half gasps, hoping the other hadn’t picked up on the disbelief in how he asked it. It wasn’t that the man was unattractive, he’s sure there was some sort of Abercrombie model hidden under those layers of Vision, but it was hard to rectify that the kind of person who captivated a dancefloor like that would have vowed eternal to the sort of person who hung back at a table and watched.

( Then again, stranger things have happened. )

“I love it, I bet you two make an adorable couple.” It’s at that does a lightbulb go off for him, causing him to swivel so he could face what he now knew was a married man more plainly. “Could I ask you a semi-strange but super appreciated favor?”

“Uhm, do you mind if I sit here?” Theo asked the stranger, taking a seat next to him on this bench. His feet had grown tired of the dancing he did with Alma and needed a moment for himself. He watched his wife as she continued to dance on the floor. The night was going well, every request Alma had made, he nodded and said a simple yes. Theo was tired of the fighting and he was going to try and do better for the sake of her and his marriage, “you having fun?” He turned his head back to the other person sitting next to him.

DJ nodded at the other man’s request to sit, willing to leave it at that as he updated his Finsta story and made it deliberately seem like he was having the actual time of his life in case one -- or two -- specific set of eyes should happen to check it.

When he speaks to him, he puts pause on his task, right before he took a photo of the drink he was two sips into.

“I’m having a ball,” He says, having attended with little expectations and having them be exceeded. Unable to help himself, he follows the line of sight that had kept the other distracted, and it lead right to a striking woman who seemed very at home on the dancefloor.

“Do we know that Smokeshow? Are we obsessed with her? I feel like I might be, just a little.”

“DJ!” Darius grinned as he spotted the other man. They had seen each other a few times since he moved to Vancouver. It was a recent move back to the city for his old friend. Having kept in contact over the years, it was good to see a familiar face in the friend. “First round on me?” He suggested to him as he approached, “We can head down by the DJ with the drinks after,” Darius said, “I’ve been hearing the music from a distance and I’m really digging the spooky vibes,” he admitted to the other, “this is probably the most fun I’ve had with Halloween festivities since I was a teen,” and he was at parties and having the time of his life.

“Darius, oh my god,” DJ says with the sincerest amount of fanfare. Despite Darius having lived there for a minute now, and himself having been back for over half a year, the novelty of his childhood friend who had always been passing through being a permanent fixture had yet to lose it’s shiny new appeal.

“You know I’m literally never going to turn that down,” He grins, starting a slow stroll towards the nearest port were they were selling booze. He was transfixed on acquiring the weirdest cocktail possible, and hope he wasn’t just stuck with beer.

“This place is bumping. One of the djs is fine as hell, I’ve been swooning.” He angles himself more towards Darius than his front facing pathway, certain he could pull out a memory or two that would confer with that. “If tonight’s really going to live up to those days then something simply batshit, borderline bone-chilling has to happen.”

“I don’t think my heart’s ever beat so fast in my life,” Dec admits freely while waiting in line, wiping the light sheen of sweat on his palms along his flannel button down. “Feels like I’m going to Scooby Doo run through this entire… fucking nightmare. Why did we do this again? We’ve got nothing to prove.”

“For the thrill of it, Dec. To feel alive.” DJ informs him, existing on the entire opposite spectrum of his roommate’s apprehension -- he was practically kinetic in his excitement, buzzing around the line like it might make it go faster. While he was pretty easily scared, he was near impossible to deter and as soon as he heard rumbles of how terrifying the place was he knew he had to experience it.

“If you feel consumed by terror then just hold onto me and I promise I’ll lead you to safety. Consider me the tiny dancer that you just have to hold closer.” He only refrains from crooning some Elton John when the line moves and they stepped closer to the entrance, just two whispering blondes left standing between them and lurking scares that awaited them.

For a good ten or fifteen minutes now Jas has been leading Silas on a chase through the woods — a performance piece, he would have described it as, for the entertainment of everyone else staying in a cabin tonight but mostly for themselves, because they’d gotten a little too tipsy and excited about their costumes. The problem is he’d stopped hearing Silas’s deranged Jack Torrance-inspired yelling about a minute ago and that either means he’s hiding or got distracted.

Swinging his bat idly and crunching through the thick blanket of leaves underfoot, Jasper breathes in the cool night air and tries to listen for him, but all he can hear now are the muffled voices of groups of people hanging out in these allegedly-haunted woods. One trio he comes across offers him a hit from a joint they’re passing around, so when he finally runs into DJ and Sawyer and realizes who he’s looking at, he’s not only drunk but high too. Which is probably good, because seeing them together makes his stomach fall like he’s just gone over a massive drop on a rollercoaster.

“Oh shit,” is the first thing out of his mouth, and after staring in shock at DJ for a couple seconds his gaze moves to Sawyer in a silent what the fuck, what the fuck he can’t verbally articulate. Because suddenly, for the first time in nearly eight years, he feels the entire weight all at once of his role as the one who’d fucked it all up. He stands there and looks at them across five feet of space that feels like five hundred, and says, “Well this is weird.”

The woods that surrounded cabins advertised as a terrifyingly good time weren’t the best terrain to traipse in the light of day, let alone after dusk when every ghoul seemed to be out to play. He’s said ew at least three times since he and Sawyer had set off, each one directed at a drunken maniac more obnoxious than the last.

He hadn’t been able to explain his restlessness to the blonde beside him, didn’t know how to put into words that he needed to wander so he didn’t have to wonder. Wonder about if he had made a mistake in departing from Cali, in coming home.

( And the one he would never say aloud -- had it been a mistake to leave in the first place? )

It hadn’t felt like a choice at the time, it had felt like survival, as though all the air had been sucked out of Vancouver for him and if he didn’t go somewhere he could inhale he may cease to be altogether.

That’s when he saw him, in an absurd wig with a bat to boot, and just as before it was as though the breath had been knocked clean out of him.

It causes him to stop dead in his tracks, a look following from Season 1 Daredevil, to Edna Mode to Wendy Torrance. If it wasn’t all so heavy, it could have been funny.

He had only been careful with one thing since his return, and that was ensuring he never had to have this encounter, because it was shaped like a key to the Pandora’s box of history that lurked between them unspoken and unacknowledged and rendering him unable to be unaffected.

“It’s only weird if you start throwing shit at me again.” DJ has no idea why that’s the first thing he can think to say, having found their chance run in at Opus almost amusing after it concluded and he had survived it mildly emotionally unscathed. He felt the same way after he had returned from Spirit Halloween alongside Sawyer, where they had spoke and spoke without having to touch on anything pertaining to this.

“Okay. It’s a little weird.”

Hadn’t that been the appeal in the first place? How times had changed.

“Hi there,” DJ says after appearing on the other side of the DJ booth like whac-a-mole, a tequila grin on his face after two fast downed shots to amp up his own levels of courage before he departed from his friend for a moment to ask two things that had been bugging him since Max took over the decks.

“I know you.” It’s not a statement, he’s only ninety percent sure on it, but it’s not a question either because that ten percent deviation wasn’t enough to have him perplexed. The greeting grows stranger as he leans in a little closer so he can be heard without qualms over the beats being played.

“But I’d have to see your abs to confirm.”

( Was he above embodying a woo woo Spring Breaker and starting a take your shirt off chant in the middle of a hootenanny? Not at all. )
