Time-Out During Quidditch

Yeah. We’re not up this long continuously during practice. Once you add that and people actually trying to take your quaffle from you for something other than to get better at it, it’s way more work!

[Justin grins when Dean compliments his steal.] Josephine is never happy to see me. Not since I chipped her broom a while back. This is definitely a preferred reason to have her mad at me. I’m just glad to have pulled it off.

How are you keeping up with them while you’re here?

Yikes, that's... that reminds me of this one time I hid my sister's football from her as a prank and she punched me in the stomach so hard that I nearly puked. And I think Ginny would actually murder me if I messed up her broom. Girls... can be really enthusiastic about sports, Justin. 

Oh, I have my sister mail me the scores. She's as much of a nut about football as I am.

Well, why does it have to be eventually? I tell you everything, man! Especially important shite like that. You don’t even trust me enough to tell me when serious shite’s going on with you and then you’re not even- [Shakes Dean off impatiently, putting distance between them]

You don’t even- I’ve been through hell these past months, and where were you? I thought you were supposed to have my back and you’re off- All the serious discussions I’ve had about clones have been with Ron and Lav and- Slytherins! I’ve talked to Tracey Davis and Daphne Greengrass more than you in the past months while you’re off having a crisis you don’t even think to tell me about. What the hell am I supposed to do with that?

[ Dean retracts his arm, not bothering to disguise how hurt he is at having been shaken off. He is shaken to see how hostile Seamus is to him and takes it as an indicator as to what the boy has been through in his absence. He can't help but feel a sudden and unwelcome jab of jealousy at the thought of Seamus growing closer and closer to the likes of Ron, Lavender, and Tracey while growing farther from Dean. ]

Where was I? I was right here! I was sleeping ten feet away from you! [ His voice raises in desperation. ] You can't push people away, ignore them when they try to talk to you, and get pissed at them when they can't be there when you need them! That's selfish and you know it, Seamus. Maybe I was selfish in not telling you right away that I might be gay or bi or whatever I am, but you're definitely topping it right now. 

[ He stands up but doesn't walk away, only rubbing his head and taking the space to breathe deeply. ] You may have Lavender and Ron as your other best mates, but you're my only best mate. Even when you're mad at me.

[ Pursing her lips and huffing out a pretend breath of exasperation, Mandy reaches on the tips of her toes to get the final strand of casserole in Dean’s hair. ] Short, me?  [ She pulls her wand from her shoe and conjures a towel. ] Maybe a little. The fact of the matter is, though: I can always get tall boys to retrieve things from high heights without even having to lift a finger. It’s even better than magic.

So I was supposed to leave a pretty mug like yours all mucked up? [ She tuts, taping him on the nose and wiping his face gently with the towel, setting it down next to the bowl when her work is finished. ] It’d be awful rude to just have laughed and left you there.

[ He raises his eyebrow, impressed by Mandy's self assurance. ] Sounds like that would come in handy. Better to use wily charms than to bother with a wand, in your case. Most people are too short for me to do the same.

[ Dean chuckles quietly as she cleans his face. ] 'Pretty'? Eh, thanks, but that would better apply to you, I think. I think people would appreciate a bunch of your clones running around much more than a bunch of mine. [ When she finishes, Dean smiles gratefully. ] Hah, it would have been, but understandable. Thanks a lot, Mandy.

I saw that! It came so close to you! I don’t think I have enough in my stomach to puke. Hannah made sure I went to breakfast but I didn’t eat much. Look though! [He holds out his hand, it’s shaking and he laughs, glad he’s not the only one nervous.]

My mum’s a big fan of the players, I watched mostly with her when I was younger. I had the worst luck with following teams, I’d always pick the loser.

Hannah Abbott? That's nice of her, and smart too. It looks so easy from afar, just flying around up here throwing balls around, but I think I would have passed out already if I hadn't eaten those grits. 

Hey! I'm shaking too! [ He holds out his hand and laughs as well. ] Wouldn't have guessed you were so nervous by the way you were playing. That was a great steal from Josephine. She did not look happy.

Ahh, well, you and I both. West Ham isn't doing too well lately.

[Doesn’t really appreciate his mate laughing at the possibility of a cloned him. He’s been scared shitless. He doesn’t find it funny.] Well, it certainly ain’t around now. Otherwise I wouldn’t have so many absences.

Yeah, well. That’s how it is with us now, innit? You’re not telling me what’s going on with you and I’m not telling you what’s going on with me. Why do you keep using past tense anyway? It’s not like you solved everything by finding me, this ain’t hide and seek.

Except I did eventually tell you what was going on with me! What, you're still mad at me 'cause I put off telling you I like blokes too? 'Cause I was nervous? I'm not as bold as you, Seamus. Just telling you - you were the first and only person I told that to, by the way - was scary enough!

Maybe I didn't solve anything, but at least I can try and help now that I've got you here. You can hate me all you want, but I'm not gonna let you go through whatever you're going through alone. 

[ He closes the gap between them by throwing an arm around Seamus' shoulders and tugging him in. Dean doesn't expect much, but he knows if he wants to reach Seamus he can't spare any comfort or touch. ]

[It’s a valid argument and one Seamus doesn’t have a fair rebuttal to, so he ignores it] Funny time to start caring about that, now that I’m going back to classes again.

[Takes a deep breath and picks at a loose thread in his trousers] Dunno. There was a clone, I think, for a bit. [a loose exhale and a sneer] Oh, come off it. What am I gonna do, off myself? [it had never been a possibility, Seamus is far too self-absorbed for that - he’s lost a stone and that by itself is horrific to him] You seem to be relaxing perfectly fine without me, no need to trouble yourself now.

A clone? Of you? Now that's the most dangerous thing I've ever heard of. You think it died already? [ He laughs quietly but a shiver runs down his back. The thought of running into Seamus's clone and telling him(/it?) all his private thoughts that were only reserved for the original thing made him sick. Hopefully the clone had gone peacefully; Dean was certain he hadn't the stomach or the nerves to watch it die. ]

Well, not off yourself. [ He shrugs, not wanting to admit it had been a very real fear. ] I thought maybe you got stuck in a cave somewhere or lost in the Forbidden Forest. [ Dean narrows his eyes. ] And why would you think I'm relaxing all nice and comfortable without you? I couldn't focus on anything - it was the first time I really had no clue what you were thinking and it scared the piss out of me.

[Seamus hadn’t been hiding exactly… okay that had been exactly what he’d been doing. It had all just- been a bit much. The whole clone situation was a bit jarring to begin with, but then there had been the death of Wayne Hopkins, the real Wayne Hopkins, which would probably have been a lot easier to come to terms with if Seamus hadn’t been a little bit in love with him. And then Dean too. Not- not the real Dean, but it wasn’t as if Seamus had known it wasn’t at the time. And that, too, would be easier to come to terms with if Seamus wasn’t a little bit in love with him. Because Dean was his best bloody friend and Seamus couldn’t even talk to him about the clone death because they were fighting and Seamus was too stubborn to apologize.

And then clothes had started disappearing from his wardrobe and his shoes went missing. The thought of having his own clone - or being one himself - Seamus didn’t know how to deal so he chose not to at all. The other one, he thought, went to classes for a while but an owl with a summons for detention due to excessive absenteeism came in, then another, then another, and Seamus cautiously began to sleep in his bed again, finally allowed himself to be caught by McGonagall and berated for his disappearance.

This, though, he’s not sure he’s ready for this.]

Oh, so we’re talking again, are we?

[ He shakes his head, dumbfounded. ] What -- You're the one who's been refusing to talk to me! I probably sent you over two dozen owls and you didn't respond to any of 'em!

[ Dean breathes in deeply and sits down next to Seamus, making an effort to keep his tone and body language even, despite his body wanting to do the exact opposite. ] I don't give a rat's arse if you're still pissed at me. Why haven't you been showing up to class? I've never seen you like this and I can't even relax for a minute without worrying you're gonna do something stupid.

Long Time No See | Dean + Seamus

[ It had been several long weeks since Dean last saw Seamus, the chair beside Dean's in their classes and at the dining hall consistently empty and cold, and Seamus always went to bed after Dean went to sleep and woke up early enough to never leave a trace by the time Dean woke up. Dean would have thought Seamus dead had it not been Ron and Lavender assuring him he wasn't, but the thought that something was so wrong that it made Seamus shut down made Dean's stomach sick with worry. He'd had enough with "give him time, Dean" and "he'll come around"; obviously being patient has had no results. Which was why he skipped morning classes to, well, stalk Seamus. He woke up at the usual time but stayed behind in the boy's dorm while his roommates went ahead to the dining hall until his stomach grumbled. He padded quietly into the common area, which was empty save for a motionless figure near the window, who he immediately zeroed in on. Dean marched up to Seamus and grabbed his shoulder, whatever speech he'd imagined going right out the window. ]

Caught you! 

  I've been looking for you for ages, where the bloody hell have you been? I've been worried sick, almost thought you went and died!

[Landing not long after Dean, Justin follows suit to the table. Anything that needs a little more coordination than keeping a grip on a broom is a little hard so he pulls off a glove before grabbing a much needed drink.]

You’d think they’d give us something other than all these layers to wear. Should take note from muggle sports. Football players just have shorts and jerseys.

Right? I would think so too. Although I think the only reason why I'm sweating so much is 'cause I'm nervous. I almost puked all over Hooch when I dodged that bludger!

Time-Out During Quidditch

[ Dean stumbles as he lands to the ground, his team-mates in tow. It's been a long game and he has a feeling it won't end soon. Despite his exhaustion, Dean is ecstatic at finally having a go at the Quaffle, his tired smile a sure indicator. He wanders over to a table near the spectators' stands with a spread of light snacks and refreshments laid out on top and grabs a cup of pumpkin juice. He takes a sip and grimaces. ]

Eugh, it's warm. Forgot how hot it gets when you're trying not to let all your teeth get smacked out by a bludger.

Count yourself lucky - I would. I haven't seen mine in person, but apparently Hermione has and it's... weird. It's weird. But you're right. Not even clones can ruin the sanctity and hallowed ground of a well stocked kitchen.

Now that’s something I’d pay a few Galleons to see. [ She gives him an easy smirk, reaching up on her tip-toes to attempt to get some casserole off of his hair. ] Lean down a bit, would you? You’re way too tall for your own good. [ Grabbing an empty plate from one of the scurrying house elves, Mandy drops the limp pieces of food that have been stuck on Dean onto the plate. Shooting him another half-flirting grin, she pushes out her bottom lid and shrugs. ] I don’t see why not, Mr. Thomas - but perhaps after I’ve gotten this mess off of you.

[ He bends his knees a bit so that he's a bit more level with Mandy. ] Oh, sorry - didn't see you were trying to clean me up through the clouds up here.  Ever consider you might be a wee bit short?

[ He fails to realize her flirtatious tone and continues to grin. ] You're doing a fine job so far, Miss Brocklehurst. Really though, you don't have to clean me up; it was my own fault for sneaking into the kitchens.
