The Color Lavender: a 90s AU about love when your world doesn’t love you back
Excerpt:
His and Castiel’s love didn’t deserve to be hidden. At the same time, Dean’s parents didn’t deserve shitty health in their old age. Neither did his brother’s child deserve to grow up without an uncle who would spoil him rotten and introduce him to Queen and Guns n Roses. As difficult as life would be under the circumstances, he had made his choice. His family was here and they needed him.
And so he lived in lavender.
There’s something about it so mysterious, as if full of secrets that it dare not share with bolder, more readily accepted colors. Its long-standing symbolism can be found in topics such as the Lavender Scare, Lavender Languages, and the most relevant to Dean’s life, Lavender Marriage; all of which directly relate to the gay community.
It meant a closeted romance. The world would see the façade they wanted to see, while he and Cas lived a double life to thrive in a world that didn’t take kindly to such subdued colors.
It meant living voiceless in a bold, loud world.
