to this day i cannot understand sessrin shippers who are like. super vocally anti-ritowa and anti-riku in general. to the point it ended up becoming a major fandom divide in the already divided fandom because of assholes on twitter

Late reply... But I think regardless of character design as they claimed their hatred was based on.. Riku is a very complex character complete with vulnerabilities and indifference to others in the series itself. He has the capability to make people think about this in relation to their own past and trauma and I believe that's what made some people deeply uncomfortable. Hatred is just easier when you're being forced to look in a mirror and face your own vulnerability when you'd rather not.
