spencerhqstings replied to your post: “You should take down that AAVE post. There are words included on that...”:
as someone black and jewish i approve of u keeping the post !
it was taken down anyway, but i will keep the ask up about the term ‘ghetto’.
maybe boost some black voices saying that aave isn't some sacred shit that nobody else is allowed to touch, because simply using aave is not racist it's literally utilizing language.
i will take down the original post. but how about i point you to some black voices that would wholeheartedly disagree? And wait — here’s some more! AAVE is a language with its own grammatical rules. it’s appropriation when the word and phrases that are being ‘utilized’ lose their original meaning and are no longer used properly while those who originally used them are belittled and looked down upon for using those very words and phrases, which is exactly what has been happening.
You should take down that AAVE post. There are words included on that post that actually originated within Jewish communities in Europe, as well as words that have been used long before America was a thing. It's widely inaccurate.
if you’re referring to the term ghetto, there is no disrespect intended. it’s meant for no intention to take away from its original content or meaning, nor is it intended to contribute to the erasure of the history behind it.
however, that term has also been heavily applied to African American communities as an insult, whether the term predates America or not, and it needs to be acknowledged. Many African Americans are referred to by white people and other non-black POC as ghetto as a term of belittlement almost to the point of being a slur and have been for quite some time now. this is a term that white people have applied to African Americans, and it has been reclaimed by them over time.
it’s a common term within the African American vernacular as the places that many Black Americans live in or many Black-dominated areas are, in fact, described as ghettos --- which did derive from the term originally used to Jewish communities. but as previously mentioned, originally done so by white people. So, I will agree that the post is inaccurate in terms of the origins of the word, it is very much a part of the African American Vernacular English. I think the important thing to take away from this is context.
some basic definitions* y'all (t100 fans) need to understand
*these are mostly contemporary U.S. definitions, as far as i know, but most of y’all who are using this terminology are from the states. this is in specific reference to bob morley and how these terms are used in a ridiculously inaccurate way to talk about him. so to clarify…
light skinned: this term, used almost exclusively by non white communities, means a person of color who is lighter skinned relative to darker skinned persons within that particular ethnic or racial group. a poc who has browner skin than most white people can also be lighter skinned compared to others. colorism does become an issue and light skinned people being the only media rep for a lot of non white communities is a problem (you need to remember that), but light skinned and white passing are different things, light skinned is not comparable to being white. (bob morley is light skinned relative to certain filipinxs but brown skinned relative to most white people. not dark skinned.)
whitewashing (with regard to characters in tv/film): this is something that occurs when a character of color’s appearance, cultural background, familial ancestry, language, etc, is disregarded, erased or minimized, in order to align them more closely to whiteness and, either aggressively or passively, to make that character more palatable for a white audience. Logically, a character cannot be whitewashed and white. (on screen, bellamy was separated from any other filipino family and represented by whiteness, and whiteness alone. that’s whitewashing.)
white passing: this phrase, used mostly in the united states in the 19th and early 20th century, is meant to describe a non white** person who passes as white, by appearance, on most occasions. typically, these people are mixed with a lot of european (over 50%) and those genes dominate their physical attributes. because of this, their non white heritage can be kept secret or hidden from plain sight. though this is possible in biracial individuals***, it is rare because most “non-white” genes contain dominant alleles and are hard to hide. this phrase was also closely related to the law and the concepts of “racial hygiene” and the “one drop rule”. if you do not understand those two things, you probably don’t understand white passing™ very well.
racially ambiguous: because most racial classifications are drawn from severely generalized physical traits, this phrase loosely describes an individual (typically a person of color) who’s specific race/ethnicity can’t be immediately deciphered, based on appearance alone.**** this does not mean that they can’t be racially classified upon learning their ethnic background. (bob can, in some ways, be considered racially ambiguous. this is mostly due to the fact that he doesn’t have monolids, which are considered an asian signifier. that’s why many south asian (sachin sahel) and mixed asian (chai romruen) people are misidentified by non asians. still, i’ve read, on more than one occasion, that most filipinx fans suspected bob was filipinx from the jump. do all filipinxs feel this way? no. do i respect their observations on this subject more than other people? ya. as should you.)
some notes -
**non white, because of the one drop rule, was almost anyone who had african or asian (sometimes jewish or native) ancestry, even if it was a small percentage. these people were not legally considered white. but because the percentages could be so small, a lot of them appeared white anyway, hence the phrase white passing. rob schneider’s fool ass is 25% filipinx, which he does not hide, and by some standards, he’s not white. still, he passes as white on most occasions.
***darren criss is half filipinx but passes as white. he’s one of the few examples of a white passing biracial individual (halsey is another example). bob isn’t white passing. he does not pass as white in his day to day life (or to anyone who isn’t completely dense for that matter). another biracial filipinx actor who is NOT white passing is conrad ricamora. a combination of bob being racially ambiguous AND his characters being whitewashed AND most of us not knowing shit about filipinx people, makes it easier for y’all to say these things. but i, along with many others, could tell he wasn’t white the minute i looked him in the face. that’s not white passing. it’s also mad disrespectful, considering that bob has openly talked about the racism he’s dealt with, based off of his appearance alone, let alone other things that make him filipinx. white passing people have a specific experience with racism, one that bob has NOT had.
****racially ambiguous ≠ white passing. in fact, they are almost complete opposites. if you’re racially ambiguous, that usually means people can tell you’re not white, but don’t know exactly what you are.
bellamy became asian the minute they hired an asian actor. just because he was aligned with whiteness (unfortunately) doesn’t mean the character is now white. that’s not what that means. you all being so desperately confused about this is literally a consequence of learned racism and the 100 whitewashing him. y'all are literally what happens when whitewashing happens.
p.s. bob is mixed and does have european blood but i guarantee if he were ever able to play opposite a diverse group of filipinx actors, he would not stand out. because he does look filipino in certain ways, apart from his brown skin. filipinx people have a complex history (colonization, among other things that i’m not too learned on) and by no means “look the same” (don’t even go there, indigenous groups don’t even all look the same). that being said, some of them do carry similar traits that makes it possible for them to i.d. each other (that’s the case for…..all ethnicities..). they are literally a diverse, diasporic, asian group that have existed for thousands of years and bob morley is a part of that group.
so can y'all please listen to filipinx people (including bob) when they talk about these things and also stop using these phrases in an inaccurate, ignorant, way to describe this man? especially if you’re white? thx
Hi, I have a question. I'm white and play a POC and I'm uncertain if I can write metas/headcanons about them facing racism, as it is something they confront in their canon story, or if that's considered racist of me? I do treat it as negative topic, which it is, not glorifying this or anything, but it does have influences on them and I just want to make sure I'm not being inconsiderate when writing about it. Thank you for your time and advice, if you can provide some :)
sorry it took so long to respond. quite frankly, i didn’t know how to answer you for a long time.
i do believe that if you are playing a character of color, you have to have the talk and think about how racism affects them because it does. every person of color experiences racism in some form or another. whether that be external or internal. every person of color also sees racism everywhere else. they see people that look like them being called horrible things, and having an experience that is uniquely not white.
i am glad that you are not glorifying it because yikes. that would beyond horrible. it’d be like people roleplaying threads based off actual human tragedies like a shooting at a school. we’ve seen this with tv shows who have done episodes on content that is real and tragic, and shouldn’t be glorified.
racism is a part of poc’s experience, but that’s not the only thing pocs have that influences them. if you’re not comfortable already on writing about racism or are uncertain, don’t. because you don’t experience and you might get it wrong. and getting things wrong by utilizing stereotypes and what mass media shows as racism as your only source,
other things that you can talk about: religion; a poc’s perceptive of religion even if it’s christianity, is very different. culture; are they an immigrant, are they not? are they connected with their culture or are they assimilated? family; what’s the pov they have? do they come from a broken family or not?
there are a lot of things that influence people of color that isn’t just racism. so understand, that yes, you can write it and you can do a shit ton of research, but that’s not gonna change the fact that you’ve never experienced racism and never will. and to understand racism, is to be affected by it personally.
proof i still don't know how to stfu: exhibit #2332154
as usual, I’m going to complain about racism in the RP comm (and media in general? idk) because it’s rampant and ugly and I’m not going to shut up about it until it’s dead and gone and you all stop being gross. Now, this was written about racism, but honestly, you can apply a lot of these to things like religion, sexuality, gender identity, etc too- they often intersect and manifest in similar ways– that said, I wanted to talk about race, so that’s what this post is going to focus on.
Things I Am Desperately Tired Of:
white being the default
You all always ask us to write you an entire doctoral thesis with an annotated bibliography and 400+ citations that has been peer-reviewed, edited, and replicated by multiple independent sources to justify us headcanoning characters as PoC so I want to turn the tables on you all.
In fantasy and mythology, in particular, since I guess that’s what I tend to side on: Why is your interpretation of some human-looking entity, like the spirit of a forest or something, white? Why is the pantheon-less god of time a white guy? Why is an angel OC white, why is a mermaid OC white? Canon characters too! Why is your interpretation of a character that wears a mask and has their skin completely covered all the time in canon a white person when they take that mask off? Why are you arguing that a character that is racially ambiguous is white? Why does your character HAVE to be white?
I’m serious. Why can their story only be told through a white lens, through a white experience? Why is whiteness the default you go to? Why is the White Experience™ the only experience you think is worth writing about?
Now, I’m not saying you can’t write white characters, or that white characters can’t be interesting. I’m not telling you that you have to feel bad about writing white characters. I’m not even telling you you need to write characters of color. What I’m asking you is to think about why “white’ is your default. I’m asking you to become aware of your (hopefully) unconscious biases and to critically think about them. Consider giving someone else representation, consider trying to learn something, to go outside your comfort zone. White is not the only valuable perspective. White is not the best perspective. White should not be the default.
white character, colorful mask
“Oh,” you say! “Then I’ll just change my faceclaim for this character and make them brown/black/asian/native/etc and call it good! That’s what you want, right?”
No. No, that is not what the fuck people mean when they say they want representation. Representation is not just skin color. Culture is not skin color. Ethnicity is not skin color. We are all the products of our upbringing, of the society and world we grew up in, and our daily experience through said society and world. It is not enough to make a character with brown skin, curly hair, dark eyes, and a big nose that has the experience of someone that grew up white. A rich, educated black woman is not going to have had the same experience going through life as a white woman of comparable wealth and education. That’s just not how the world works- and people of color are very much aware of this! You can’t just change a color palette, alter some features, and say you’ve made a good character of color. That’s not representation, that’s not authentic. I’m not saying I’m not 100% for casting, say, an Asian actor for a role previously played by a white person. But that’s not good enough.
I want to look at a character in media and see myself in them, just like all you white people can. I want to have so many characters I can relate to like that that I don’t even count them anymore. I want there to be so many characters of color in books that they’re no longer confined to the “ethnic” section of the library or book store, that I don’t tell every single one of my friends when I find a book that has just one. I want to log on to my RP blog on tumblr dot com and see people enthusiastically writing characters of color, excited to thread with them. I want you all to see us as worth your goddamned time.
And that requires a lot more than appearances- and if you’re going to write a character from a race, culture or ethnicity you’re not a part of, you’re going to have to do a hell of a lot of work and research. It’s a different experience from yours and from anything you’re used to- you can’t half ass it.
And honestly, if you think it’s too much work to write a character that isn’t white, and you think we’re asking too much for you to break your defaults, your writing is crap. Like, straight up, I’ll say it. You’re a crap, lazy writer. I’m not saying you have to be perfect! You’re going to make mistakes, that doesn’t make you a bad writer. I’m also not saying you can’t have any white characters at all. I’m not saying that you’re a bad writer because you’ve never considered this until now. But I am saying that if you, as a writer, can’t muster up the effort to do research, try writing from a different perspective, and go outside your comfort zone, your material is shit. That is literally what writers have to do to write good stories- researching is a part of writing! Some of you have never stepped inside a laboratory a day in your fucking life and yet can write a realistic enough biologist. You may have never even changed the oil in your car, but you can write a damned good mechanic. You’re not a fifty year old man, but you can write a good wizened character. You’re not a fucking vampire, but you do a mean Dracula. Why the hell can’t you apply that effort, that time, that passion to writing a character that isn’t white? Why? Please, someone explain. What is it about people of color that you find so impossible to relate to that elves that live in on a floating rock in outer space don’t present the same problem? Please, tell me, I’d love to know why the fuck my people are more bizarre and less human than aliens to you.
But point is, you can’t half ass it. And I love Oscar Isaac as much as anyone, but you don’t get off the hook because you cast him and then play him like he was a rich white man his whole life.
gross, ugly stereotypes & fetishizing
Stop it. Just fucking stop it. It’s ugly, it’s racist, it’s disgusting, and honestly, you can shove your entire fist up your own ass. It’s 2017 and if you’re a grown ass adult, you should know better- and let’s be fucking real, you do know better, we all know you do, stop playing the fucking victim. You’re an asshole, fuck you.
And if you really, genuinely don’t know (doubtful, but technically possible), when someone calls you out, shut your ignorant ass up and go fucking read up on it instead of crying because someone on the internet said you were a racist. Trust me, there are entire libraries worth of people of color calling you white folks out on your bullshit. Educate yourself and stop being so fucking gross.
whitewashing & cultural appropriation
This is both for graphics and characters. Here’s the thing: if your muse is a PoC, their FC, if they have one, better damned well be too. And if your muse’s FC is brown, don’t photoshop the hell out of your icons so no one can tell. Brown is not ugly. Black is not ugly. And yes, race and ethnicity are not skin color, I said that myself. But colorism is real and even besides that, why won’t you let brown characters be brown? It’s not technical ability- trust me, as someone that has used photoshop -3 times, it is not that hard to apply an edit that doesn’t wash out someone’s skin tone. And it’s not that hard to correct- you have an undo button!
As for characters, if I see any of you playing an Egyptian god’s FC as a skinny white boy one more time, a kistune cast as a blonde white girl, a spirit of a mountain range in Brazil played by Ian Somerhalder, a fucking demon from Indonesia as a redhaired freckled white guy, le juro a Dios, I will step out of this fucking screen and strangle you myself. Why!!! Why the fuck, how the fuck, why the fuck would that be their human FC? Why!!!!!
Even if they had all the power in the world and could change their appearance at will, WHY WOULD THEY CHOOSE TO BE WHITE IF THEY ARE FROM A NON-WHITE MAJORITY COUNTRY??? Just for real, answer that. If you can give me an answer that doesn’t sound like white supremacist bullshit, I’ll shut the fuck up for life. But stop trying to find excuses to make a character of color white. That’s gross, there’s absolutely no need, there is absolutely no need.
not finding muses of color interesting
Look at your threads real quick. How many of them are with muses of color? How many of them are with white characters?
Notice a disparity? Yeah, we do too.
Now, I know!!! I know there are not a lot of us that play muses that aren’t white. Sad to say, but I think I probably follow most of them, and I know tumblr RP, even the fandomless indie OC world, is huge. But we are not impossible to find! We are not hiding! No, what I have seen happen is that muses of color are passed over and ignored, criticized much more harshly than white muses, and generally ostracized from everyone else. And it’s not our writing, it’s not that we all just happen to magically, as a group, lack talent (that’s racist, Becky)- it’s that your progressive values only extend as far as “protect (white) (cis) (conventially/eurocentrically attractive) female muses!!!!!!”. You don’t actually care about diversity, that’s what it comes down to, and it’s obvious.
Stop ignoring us! Stop this performative, fake ass white liberal bullshit and actually care about us and our characters as much as you do the 300 different versions of what’s his face edgy-white-boy from that one movie.
And don’t think you’re slick because you have a white writing partner that has one muse of color on their multi-muse blog that you write with sometimes: there’s a very interesting disparity in treatment between muses of color that are played by PoC and muses of color that are played by white people, and I’m sure you know which way it’s skewed. Amazingly, when PoC are played as stereotypes or fetishized (always by white people, let’s be honest), they get really popular really fast. But PoC writing their own stories well, with care and attention to detail and passion? Nah, we’re just not your style or you’re already busy with other threads or we/our muses just don’t happen to click with you/your muses, nothing personal, and you’re not a racist, it’s just, you know, it is what it is uwuwuwuwuwu
white people being afraid of the mean scary poc of color minorities
Why the fuck are you white people so afraid of us? You think we’ll beat you up? Say mean things? Block you? Talk about you to our friends? Ooh, terrifying.
Is it a fear of being called a racist? Here, I’ll make it easy:if you’re white, you’re racist. There, done, and look at that- you’re fine. You lived. No one touched a hair on your head, look at that!
Turns out, being told that something you did or said is racist is not the worst thing in the world! And you can do and say racist things without being a member of a hate group or without assaulting people on the streets! If you grow up in a racist society, you have to unlearn those racist ideologies that you unconsciously incorporated into your way of thinking and acting. There’s a lot you can read up on regarding how this happens, but know this: being the product of a racist society does not make you, by default, a bad person. What makes you a bad person is your inability to confront your implicit biases and prejudices and work to change them. What makes you a bad person is you putting your personal emotional comfort over the safety and well-being of millions of people that happen to be mentally, emotionally and physically affected by your inability to swallow your pride. What makes you a bad person is you caring more about me saying you’re racist than caring about the fact that your words and actions enforce a very real, very pervasive system of oppression founded on white supremacy.
There is so much more I could add, but this is already long and I’m tired.
TBH I’m just fucking tired. I am tired of white bullshit irl all the time, I am tired of it where my hobbies are, I am tired of it in the media and I am tired of so many of you so much like oh my god. But no rambling, no more, like I said, this is already long so:
tl;dr- White is not better than anything else. White should not be the default. PoC are human beings and just as interesting and deserving of consideration as your white fave. Racism is bad. Do better.
Nothing too controversial!!!!!!
That’s it, I’m done, tune in next week for more bitching- and please, again @ my fellow poc, feel free to add, of course.
And yes @ white people, you are v much encouraged to reblog this. No, you are not allowed to complain about how I’m mean and I should be nicer so you’re not racist or how racism is fake anyway or how me calling you white is as bad as you calling people *insert 10000 slurs here* or how I’m infringing on your free speech or how it’s “just my preference to be racist” blah blah bullshit. Consider this me expressly not asking for your bigoted, ignorant opinion or comments or input, thanks.
i'm tired of venting about white people only for a white to show up in my IMs like "oh but we're friends uwuw and i'm white !! so you hate me ?? your white friend??" like if you keep this up becky i just might start hating you
Is it ok for white people to follow?
please read the guidelines before asking questions. also, i can’t really tell if you’re white or not and i’m not going to dive deep into each of our followers to check if they are a poc or not. like no one has time for that.
stop acting like poc are interchangeable! we're not! i'm sick of seeing hollywood finally take some steps to include diversity only for the community to not care and cast poc interchangeably like they do! it makes me even more mad when these blogs are embraced and nobody bats an eye at their offensive and lazy miscasting! it seriously hurts to see a character i personally identify with and love use some actress as a fc just because she's hot and pretty. because lbr that's the only reason.
I find it really eye rolling whenever white rpers who rp poc muses says they have a hard time finding a rl face claim, and it's more unnerving that they have the gall to use a white face claim because they share similar facial features to the said character. Either look harder or don't use a face claim at all.
gotta say i loved the mention for my flash otp. it is racism the ridicule and bashing it regularly receives, pure and simple. it's not even just the fact people go out of their way to ship s/nowbarry, i have noticed in both my time as an rper in the fandom and on my personal that people are quick to ship barry with anyone white / who is not iris which makes me side eye. so transparent. you don't even gotta reply but it was nice to see someone call it out for what it is from the rpcomm.
i find it strange how people say they find it hard to find POC aesthetic images or whatever, yet on pinterest there's like 100+ boards for dark skin and specific kinds of POC with a lot of them having more than 1k of images. like wyd. you're not trying enough and staying complacent is more the problem.
if anything, why do you guys personally think white characters get more attention than POC ones? like, i know racism and all - but for the RPC specifically - with all the outcry and amounts of muns who are POC and people (poc or not) RPing POC characters, it sort of makes me wonder as to why we do have as many problems as we do with POC characters when there seems to be such a public talk about them? idk, i guess it's just food for thought with the dissonance i suppose
you answered your own question right there, in your question : “like, i know racism and all”. it’s for the same reasons as to why skam, a fucking norwegian show, got more attention than the get down. it’s for the same reason as to why people jerked off to stiles, while degrading and taking core traits out of scott in teen wolf. the same reason as to why people will go out of their fucking way to ship snowbarry and claim that westallen is somehow bad, toxic, whatever. it’s pure, simple, racism.
see, there’s a big difference between words and actions. words without actions are meaningless, and we are proven times and times again that the outcry for Diversity™ that white tumblr shouts is empty. it’s meaningless. they do it to look Cool™, Woke™ or whatever, but in reality they are as deeply rooted in racism as those who don’t say anything.
there’s a public talk about the importance of representation everywhere, the importance of diversity, but that is absolutely meaningless when white people don’t get out of their seats to support and encourage those projects. that is why. racism and all.
lets be real. there are some parts of this community that uses rp as a fantasy fulfilling medium. which isn’t a bad thing but it is why there are a shit ton of jokers and lokis. it’s wish fulfillment, it’s self inserting, it’s why fanfics for those two characters are always in the thousands. it’s kinky to be with a villain, especially when he’s white cause that just mean’s he’s problematic not dangerous like a black villain or a latino villain because they are the other and the real problem in society. a white boi can be fixed. a white boi has redemption.
and it’s not like there are lot of roles/parts that are characters of color. so even if there is a character, maybe someone just doesn’t have a muse for them. and the rpc community isn’t that great with supporting original characters ( for some reason –especially if they are non-white). so imagine if you want to play a character, there is a lack of characters and even resources for characters of color. there is a lot of already done shit for people like emma watson and jennifer lawerence. like they have a lot of things because they play iconic characters and they are just Popular and there are plenty of resources to go around.
honestly, if you are saying you want diversity and yet you don’t interact with people of color and characters of color, your words are pointless. you are just looking to have that poc in your followers list so you look like you are progressive and liberal and fuck thats not the point? support poc characters, plot with them, have threads with them. cause if you don’t you’re just continuing the problem which is systemic racism. especially when they are female characters of color, it’s really hard not to get out that little niche. it’s really discouraging when people don’t get likes on their starter calls and yet when a white person puts up one, they get in the double digits in less than an hour.
if anything, why do you guys personally think white characters get more attention than POC ones? like, i know racism and all - but for the RPC specifically - with all the outcry and amounts of muns who are POC and people (poc or not) RPing POC characters, it sort of makes me wonder as to why we do have as many problems as we do with POC characters when there seems to be such a public talk about them? idk, i guess it's just food for thought with the dissonance i suppose

what are your opinions on the white mod running p4poc when they have consistently shat on the concerns of actual pocs?
being made aware of this, i think that this changes things. it is part of the reason why many have their reservations about a white mun running a blog like p4poc, and is the exact reason why POC prefer safe spaces that are exclusively POC. while their intentions may be good, it’s most certainly not the same as being run by a non-white person because their privelege can prevent them from being able to properly and respectfully acknowledge the concerns and perspectives of POC.
what's your opinion on the white mod running p4poc?
at least they are not pretending to be a poc and are looking for poc mods to help maintain the blog. and i think they even have a second mod who is of color. again, we aren’t here to fight and police every blog whose purpose is to mend the broken community and bring back trust between roleplayers. if they don’t have malice intentions, why should we be angry? if the intention of the mod is to give poc a safe space where they can speak their minds, then i say go for it.
while all of this may be true, we do understand that there are many who may not feel comfortable with this particular blog. i know of at least two other poc positivity blogs that are run solely by poc: @sunflowersofcolor & @yaypoc .
