Hiii girl!! Do you still think that Jude might be pregnant after reading TPT? I only found your Ted Talk post from 2023 a few days ago and I was wondering what do you think now?

I’m going to be so honest, I don’t remember enough about the duology to be able to give a confident answer either way. I’ve been wanting to do a massive reread of the entire series because I miss it and I’ve literally been all work no play lately, but news about a live action adaptation really took the wind out of my sails.

It’s possible that I’d change my mind with a reread 🥺

one of the things i admire most about obsession is the deliberate denial of any kind of optimistic ending, as well as the method by which that is executed. i’m thinking, specifically, of how the musical cues are utilized to pull multiple bait-and-switches on the audience: the way the music swells when bear is explaining the wish to ian and asking for his help; when bear puts the gun in his mouth; and when he takes the oxycodone.

obviously, if ian wishes away bear’s initial wish, that’s a happy ending! if bear dies in the bathroom and we cut to black, the audience can hold onto the hope that the wish breaking allows nikki to go back to her life before!

but those endings, especially the latter, would be dishonest. i appreciate that the film makes us sit in nikki’s anguish instead, bc i appreciate that it understands that she was equally affected by this, if not more so! an ending that bleak is honest to the concept and to the consequences inherent to the concept and i think it shows a great deal of respect for nikki. it’s an acknowledgement that nikki experienced something deeply violating and now has to somehow learn how to cope with it.

nikki breaks my heart so bad because in the brief moments we see her before the wish kicks in, she's so cool and funny, clearly kindhearted, very driven about her future (telling bear about how she was going to quit her job to focus on her writing), and also very sure of herself as a person. ive seen people describe this movie as "mean-spirited" and I think thats so apt because it was a 2 hour long tragedy of the torture of this innocent girl, taking away everything she's ever had, including her own sense of self, putting her through unimaginable horrors, and leaving her with nothing except the three dead bodies of her friends, with the one who she trusted most being the one who did this to her. nothing for her to look for hope in, because she has nothing before her except a lifetime in prison or in an institution. it would be one thing if the movie ended on a note like weapons, where everything was over and there would hopefully be recovery somewhere down the line, but here, not only was the evil not committed by a random stranger but her closest friend, but she doesn't get any chance at recovery either. so goddamn tragic. on that note, if anyone can come up with some sort of fix-it for nikki please link it to me because I will be crying about this girl forever.

I genuinely appreciate how obsession doesn't try to frame bear as morally grey but just fully leans into how deplorable he is. a lesser movie would have tried to give him redeeming moments along the way but no, at every single crossroads bear makes the wrong choice. when the customer service rep asks him if he wants to cancel his wish, he says no, and asks to alter it. when nikki, the real one, begs him to kill her, he asks her "if it would be so bad to love him", and right at the end, backs out of killing himself and tries to throw the pills up. he is the villain, not another victim, not a confused, cowardly boy, the villain.

I will never get over the fact that Jude and Cardan just kissed in bed after their wedding vows. Because that's?? The sweetest thing ever?? Like Jude was stuck in the Undersea for a while and Cardan got poisoned and almost died as well so they were both tired and probably wanted to be vulnerable with eachother after their vows of "partnership" (ahemMarriageahem).

Just imagining them all tangled up and in eachother's arms... Exchanging soft kissies under the covers after Cardan made flowers bloom in their room... Them probably caressing eachother and holding eachother as they kiss, their eyes closed but then they sleepily open them from time to time to look at eachother under the moonlight. I abduzjejzjsjzj
