I am truly grateful to have reached the completion of this journey and excited to embrace what lies ahead. This final class brought everything we have learned over the last 12 months full circle. More than just another course, it felt like the final step in preparing us professionally, creatively, and strategically for what comes next in our careers and personal endeavors.

Throughout this Master’s degree curriculum, we were challenged not only to learn concepts, but to apply them in practical, real-world ways. From public relations and branding, to event marketing, strategic communication, media development, reputation management, and presentation skills, every course contributed another essential tool to our professional toolkit. This final class helped solidify those lessons and reminded me that success is not built on talent alone, but on preparation, adaptability, professionalism, and execution.

One of the things I appreciated most about this program was how it encouraged us to think beyond assignments and begin thinking like professionals serving real clients and audiences. It strengthened my confidence, sharpened my communication skills, expanded my creativity, and challenged me to approach projects with greater intentionality and excellence.

As I move forward, I truly feel like my “virtual briefcase” is now packed with the essential tools needed to navigate the next chapter successfully. While I know learning never stops, this program has provided a strong foundation that I will continue to build upon professionally, creatively, and personally. I am proud of how far I have come, thankful for the growth this journey produced, and excited for the opportunities that await me.

Online Media Room

When I started this course, I expected to learn how to build and organize an online media room to support public relations efforts. I thought it would mostly be about technical steps and best practices, useful, but straightforward. What I didn’t expect was just how strategic and intentional the whole process would be.

This course didn’t just meet my expectations, it pushed them further. It challenged me to look beyond simply sharing information and really think about purpose. Every element of a media room plays a role in building trust, shaping how an audience sees an organization, and strengthening credibility. One of the biggest takeaways for me was learning how digital PR principles come together into a cohesive content strategy. That shift has changed the way I approach communication overall, making it more thoughtful and deliberate.

This course has done a lot to prepare me for my future career. I think I am going to build off my personal profile website to make it permanent as I move forward. This course reinforced that public relations isn’t just about communicating; it’s about being intentional and strategic in how you position a message. Creating an online media room for both a client and myself gave me hands-on experience that feels directly relevant to real-world work. It helped me think more like a strategist, anticipate what audiences need, and create content that actually makes an impact.

One of the most surprising takeaways was realizing just how much of public relations revolves around perception and proactive storytelling. I also learned something important about myself: I naturally lean toward strategic thinking and brand positioning. This course showed me that I’m not just someone who completes tasks; I can lead communication efforts with clarity and purpose.  And I truly enjoyed being part of the Zoom class this past week, very insightful.

Mastery Journal: Reputation Management Strategies

Entering the Reputation Management Strategies course, my objective was to deepen my understanding of how organizations protect, monitor, and strategically shape their public image, especially in moments of pressure or crisis. Given my professional experience working in ministry engagement and communications, I wanted to strengthen my ability to not only respond well, but to respond wisely, timely, and with intention. This course met and exceeded that expectation.

One of the most valuable takeaways was learning how to actively monitor sentiment across multiple platforms, rather than relying on assumptions or delayed feedback. Understanding how conversations, search rankings, and public perception evolve in real time reinforced the importance of being proactive rather than reactive. I appreciated how the course emphasized not just what people are saying, but why they are saying itand how that insight informs strategic communication decisions.

Additionally, the focus on social metrics and web analytics stretched my thinking. Prior to this course, I understood engagement at a surface level, but now I see how data can and should drive messaging, timing, and platform selection. Translating analytics into actionable strategy is a skill I recognize as essential, especially in environments where communication directly impacts trust, credibility, and participation.

Another area that stood out was reputation defense and repair. The exploration of misinformation, outdated press, and online criticism highlighted how fragile and yet recoverable a reputation can be when handled correctly. I found this especially relevant to both organizational leadership and ministry contexts, where perception can influence not only participation but belief and trust. The strategies presented gave me a structured way to approach these challenges with clarity rather than emotion.

Perhaps most impactful was the application of these principles to personal reputation management. In a digital world where our online presence often precedes us, being intentional about how we are represented and how we respond is critical. This course helped me recognize that reputation management is not only an organizational responsibility but a personal one as well.

Professionally, I see immediate application in my current role, particularly in how I communicate with church partners, respond to challenges, and help shape the perception of the initiatives I support. It has also strengthened my ability to think strategically about messaging, ensuring that communication aligns with both mission and audience perception. Personally, this course has encouraged me to be more mindful and strategic about my own digital presence as I continue to grow in both ministry and professional spaces.

Overall, this course did more than provide information, it refined my perspective. It reinforced that reputation is not managed in moments of crisis alone, but in the consistency of everyday communication, intentional listening, and strategic action.

Mastery Journal Entry: Events Marketing and Production

I began this Events Marketing and Production course by jumping in late, at fault of my own. Entering the class after it had already begun required immediate focus and discipline, and I had to push myself to catch up quickly. While challenging, that experience became an unexpected strength of the course for me.

The open scheduling structure and single major deadline allowed me to manage my time strategically, prioritize deliverables, and approach the coursework as though I were working for a real client. That structure made the learning experience feel practical, immersive, and professionally relevant rather than purely academic.

My original objective for this course was to gain a clearer, more strategic understanding of how events move from concept to execution, particularly how marketing, audience targeting, and production logistics intersect to create effective and meaningful experiences. This course met and, in many ways, exceeded that objective. It reinforced the idea that successful events are not simply about coordination or promotion, but about intentional planning rooted in purpose, audience awareness, and measurable outcomes.

One of the most valuable lessons from the course content was the emphasis on intentionality in event design. I learned the importance of clearly defining event goals, identifying the intended audience, selecting the appropriate event format, and ensuring that every element, from branding to content flow, supports the overall objective.

Professionally, I can apply what I learned directly to my work in marketing, communications, and event planning. The course strengthened my ability to create event proposals, evaluate feasibility, and align events with organizational missions and marketing strategies. I now approach event planning more holistically, considering not only execution but also audience experience, post-event evaluation, and long-term impact.

Overall, this course sharpened my strategic thinking, reinforced real-world application, and increased my confidence in planning events with intention and clarity. Despite starting late, the structure and content of the class allowed me to fully engage, learn deeply, and produce meaningful work that I can carry forward into both professional and personal projects.

What were your expectations of the course, and how did the course meet those expectations? I entered this course expecting to learn practical techniques and strategies for engaging with new media in a meaningful and effective way. Those expectations were fully met. The coursework expanded my understanding of how media relations have evolved and how strategic thinking must adapt alongside emerging platforms and technologies.

What content or assignment did you enjoy the most or get the most out of? Why? I enjoyed creating the Video News Release (VNR) the most. Anything that allows me to engage my creative side within a media context is gratifying. The assignment challenged me to think visually and strategically about storytelling, an area I find both stimulating and professionally valuable, although being on camera remains an area of growth for me.

What do you wish you could have done better this month? Why? I wish I had managed my time more effectively early on, as late assignments initially impacted my performance in the course. While I ultimately learned from that experience, it reinforced the importance of discipline and consistency in both academic and professional environments.

How did this course prepare you for your career? This course prepared me for a critical aspect of public relations: strategically engaging with new media. It strengthened my understanding of how media tools, content creation, and messaging intersect, and it reinforced the importance of adaptability in a constantly shifting media landscape.

What future trend do you think will be the most challenging for media relations professionals to navigate over the next five years? I believe one of the most challenging trends will be managing the public relations aspects of personality-driven brands. These brands can rise, thrive, or decline based on the actions, words, or reactions of a single individual. Navigating authenticity, accountability, and rapid public response in these cases will require heightened sensitivity, agility, and strategic foresight.

Social Media Metrics and ROI

Completing the "Social Media Metrics and ROI" course has been both insightful and empowering. My original goal in taking this course was to better understand how to measure the success of public relations efforts using data-driven tools. I wanted to be able to clearly communicate the value of my work to employers and stakeholders, and this course absolutely met, and even exceeded, those expectations.

One of the most valuable things I learned was the importance of using social media and website analytics not just for reporting, but as a foundation for strategic decision-making. The course provided a strong overview of measurement tools and taught me how to track return on investment (ROI) effectively in the context of PR campaigns. Learning how to interpret engagement metrics, reach, impressions, and conversions helped me see the bigger picture of how digital efforts translate into meaningful outcomes.

The hands-on exploration of technological tools for data collection and analysis was especially helpful. It gave me the practical knowledge I need to evaluate what’s working, make improvements in real-time, and clearly demonstrate results to clients or employers.

Going forward, I plan to apply these skills professionally by incorporating analytics into every stage of my PR planning and reporting. Whether I’m launching a social campaign or evaluating media outreach, I now have the tools to quantify success and optimize future efforts. 1. What were your expectations of the course, and how did the course meet up with those expectations?

Coming into this course, I expected to learn how to use a variety of public relations tools and platforms, particularly in the context of social media and digital communication. I also hoped the course would bridge traditional communication theory with the demands of modern PR practice. This course exceeded those expectations by not only teaching the how but also the why behind PR strategies. The emphasis on understanding the mindset behind communication tools helped me think more critically and strategically, something I didn’t fully anticipate but deeply appreciated.

2. What content or assignment did you enjoy the most or get the most out of? Why?

The assignment I found most valuable was the final assignment, which was the creation of the PR campaign strategy. It allowed me to apply both creative and analytical thinking, conducting stakeholder identification, competitive analysis, and developing a multi-platform campaign. This hands-on project gave me a clearer understanding of how to apply theory to practice. It also challenged me to integrate branding, storytelling, and digital engagement in a way that felt realistic and career-relevant.

3. What do you wish you could have done better this month? Why?

I wish I had managed my time more efficiently when working on the larger assignments. There were moments when I had a strong vision for a campaign or analysis but didn’t give myself enough time to refine the details or explore deeper research. Better time management would have allowed me to push the quality and depth of my work further.

4. How did this course prepare you for your career?

This course gave me a strong foundation in how to think like a PR professional. It prepared me to adapt to evolving platforms, craft campaigns with strategic intent, and understand the importance of audience, messaging, and digital tools. Most importantly, it emphasized that tools may change, but critical thinking, strong writing, and ethical communication remain essential. That mindset is something I will carry with me into any role in communications, branding, or media.

5. What was the most surprising thing you learned about as media has been transitioning over the past several years?

The most surprising insight was how much power has shifted to the audience in shaping brand narratives. Media is no longer a one-way stream, it’s interactive, user-driven, and deeply rooted in relationships. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram don’t just host content; they create culture. The shift from traditional press releases to influencer collaborations, real-time storytelling, and user-generated content reshaped how I view the role of PR, it’s not just about broadcasting a message, but building a community around it.

This course really got to the meat of public relations. Throughout this course, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the value of comprehensive industry overview reports, situational analyses, and well-structured research plans. These tools have shifted from being academic exercises to becoming essential instruments in how I understand markets, assess challenges, and support strategic communication efforts. I’ve come to see that these components are not just foundational, they are transformative when done with excellence.

Though I’ve been unofficially working in the capacity of a public relations specialist for quite some time, crafting communications, advising on messaging, and building trust with diverse audiences, this class has sharpened and stretched me in ways I didn’t expect. It has elevated my goals, refined my thought process, and added a deeper layer of intentionality to my work.

I am committed to holding onto and perfecting these skills, knowing they are vital to my growth as a public relations specialist. One of my favorite assignments this month was Week Three’s social media assignment. This stood out to me for two key reasons. First, the process of researching, preparing, and compiling the lesson taught me a great deal, not just about the subject matter, but also about how to present it in a compelling and relevant way. Second, I felt exceptionally comfortable sharing what I had learned, as it aligned with my strengths. I’ve realized that I often communicate best through verbal expression, and this assignment gave me the opportunity to do just that with confidence and clarity.

As a communications professional, the most valuable topic covered this month was our exploration of copyright laws. This subject was particularly impactful for several reasons:

It emphasized the critical importance of recognizing intellectual property rights, something communications professionals frequently encounter when creating and distributing content.

I gained a deeper understanding of the elements that constitute copyright infringement, which is essential for avoiding costly legal missteps.

I also learned the limitations and scope of the fair use doctrine, which helped me see how to responsibly repurpose content while remaining within legal boundaries.

The knowledge I’ve gained this month will undoubtedly strengthen my ability to execute communication strategies with greater intentionality, precision, and professional excellence. Class: Writing for Interactive Media

I have gained several valuable insights throughout this course which will prove to be directly applicable to my work in the media marketing and public relations industry. First, I learned how to effectively appeal to a target audience that resonate and drive engagement. Understanding the distinctions of a target audience allows me to create messaging that speaks directly to their needs and interests, ultimately increasing engagement.

Second, I learned the importance of developing and adhering to a content schedule for websites and social media platforms, as consistency and strategic content distribution not only helps maintain visibility but also builds trust with an audience. A well-planned content calendar ensures alignment with broader marketing goals and sustains audience engagement.

Third, I learned how the proper story angle can shape, strengthen and provide clarity. In public relations and marketing, identifying the most compelling angle is key to gaining media coverage and capturing attention.

Lastly, the post for Week 3 Story 2 was my favorite post as all the previous lesson regarding developing a story, resources and interview came to life. This assignment taught me the value of thoroughly detailing sources, which builds credibility and integrity in storytelling. It also reinforced the importance of remaining committed to a chosen story angle throughout the narrative.

Overall, this class sharpened my skills and deepened my understanding of how to create strategic, credible, and engaging content that supports both marketing objectives and public relations efforts.
