It's one of many reasons that workers tell Polygon they are eager to unionize.
Employees and developers working on Magic: The Gathering Arena say they were hired with promises of remote flexibility, so they bought homes and built lives around those assurances. But they say they are now being told they may need to relocate to Washington state — or effectively lose their jobs.
Those concerns are a major reason why a supermajority of workers on the Arena team are attempting to unionize with the Communications Workers of America, under the banner United Wizards of the Coast. The group publicly launched its campaign on April 27, calling on Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro to voluntarily recognize the union by May 1.
These employees are doing important and laudable work in response to being forced into a bad situation but I’m glad they still took the opportunity to call themselves “United Wizards”
WotC has still refused to recognize the union and has escalated to sending organizers letters directly to their homes about how unionizing is a bad idea. Luckily, our United Wizards are educated, organized, and agitated and the form letter from Hasbro was as laughable as it was threatening.

having an academic idiot 10 years older than me confidently say “you’re too young to remember Hurricane Katrina. you were just a baby!” and then having to inform them that 6 years old is plenty old enough to form memories and that I literally stood in the fucking eye of it and it killed people I knew and destroyed everything I knew. but yeah. I was just a baby probably and you know everything cause you watched it on the news from the comfort of your couch in your living room. my bad man.
when I was attending as an undergraduate at UNM I had to drop a class over this exact issue. my professor ARGUED WITH ME over specific events that occurred during Katrina, and then insisted it was in 2002 (it was in 2005) and that I was too young to know better and needed to shut up.
I lived off of MREs and bottled water being dropped by the coast guard in pallets. I lost my kindergarten teacher. I lost my entire childhood. and you…. “won” an argument.
this is escaping containment so I just want to clarify: this is the exception and not the rule with most people in the humanities.
this dickhead professor had several other issues and was pretty young. I was not the only student who had issues with him
most (over 90%) of people in these areas of study above a certain maturity level react to the information that I was in Katrina with nothing but sympathy, and sadness, and grace and understanding. ESPECIALLY if they are a poc or they lived in the south.
unlike a trauma like 9/11 which has become an unreal surreal meme over time to the general populace, Katrina is still a name that invokes horror and outrage amongst the educated. and for a very good reason.
Hurricane season starts in 2 months. we are less prepared than ever. that is intentional.
Fellow Katrina survivor. I turned 10 four days before the storm and had my birthday party on the beach the day before because we couldn't evacuate (household member would have needed air evac, had no access to such).
Take hurricane season seriously. El Niño years can cause people to let their guard down expecting a milder season. Even a mild season can produce major, life-threatening storms.
Keep a supply box, stock up on flashlights, consider evacuation routes if able and things like cooling during power loss (battery operated portable fans, misters, more water than you think you need).
It's almost bed for me or I'd have more to say, but just please prepare, and remember compassion.
trans fems who compare abortion inaccess to “being baby trapped” truly have no appreciation or grasp of the brutality of a continued unviable or unwanted pregnancy. the psychological and physical toll is immense and permanent. not every pregnancy ends in survival. more people kill themselves from pregnancy than you’d like to imagine.
Or their partner or family kills them. (Check the homicide rates for yourself if you want to be really depressed.)
Or a medical professional does. Never had a pregnant friend, but one of my friends was dismissed when he had an ovarian cyst burst. Another was sent home despite heavily bleeding. The next day, she went back and her blood test was halved. She required several transfusions and a total uterine ablation.
I have many stories of my friends being ignored just because they have a uterus.
you know what, "because i'm in pain" is a good enough reason as any. why do you want to take meds? in pain. why do you wanna cancel? in pain. why didn't you want to talk? in pain. yeah don't be a jerk to everyone you meet and expect them to welcome that. but why were you being a jerk? in pain. it's a reasonable explanation. being in pain should be enough of an explanation. it should be considered an immediate problem that we try to fix as soon as possible instead of expecting the vast majority of people alive to just get on with it.
the internet (and tumblr especially) is the only place where i feel like there’s a lot of wheelchair users… but we’re still not even the majority in wheelchair conversations on here lol
like i just saw a decent post about wheelchair specific ableism and like. it’s correct. but im not going to reblog it because OP isn’t a wheelchair user and im so fucking tired of their voices being centered even when its literally About Us. idk idk.

film music peaked in the 90s with original scores in made for tv/horror b movies.
like yeah having a popular song pop up in your favorite show or movie is neat every now and then but having a soundtrack made specifically in mind for that particular piece of media just gives it so much more personality.
a good score can drag you right into the film and immerse you with its setting and characters, but when you shoehorn in a super well-known track in a scene for publicity purposes it can be jarring and totally rip you out of that immersion and fuck up an otherwise great scene. not to mention it'll totally overshadow any original scoring made specifically for that film.
Counterpoint: Shrek came out in 2001. There's a really good video on its score on YouTube.

If you feel that you don't fit well into your community, perhaps that's simply a sign that you should seek or build a new one. Others of your shared mindset will happily join you. You aren't as alone as you think.
They could never make me hate you, complex female character whose reaction to trauma was not pretty and digestible like how people think it should be.
I don’t like this trend in media where struggling characters “have” to die. why aren’t addicts and outcasts allowed to have happy or hopeful endings anymore. I know things are bleak and people die but holy shit. the one grace of media is that you can CHOOSE to live in the best reality possible where EVERYONE can move on with their life and things can get better, not this defeatist nonsense.

Yes!!! Community action is where it's at! One of the most powerful things the Black Panthers did to advance civil rights and find allies was opening up a free kitchen.
You didn't have to be a member, so lots of people came to get their children fed. Just that elevated the Black Panthers in people's minds and built communities.
And while they were there, the Black Panthers educated people on what action could look like. Not just marching, not just spreading knowledge, but passive resistance techniques. For example, being clumsy can slow down a factory significantly. Do it in a weapons factory, and you can hamper the war machine. If you're sneaky enough, you might even be able to sabotage the weapons.
You could also build mutual aid networks. It can start as simply as making friends in your community and helping each other out. As you gain more allies and resources, you might be able to open your own free kitchen.
health isn't a virtue.
people still go around acting like they've done something good in order to be able bodied and healthy. that they worked for it, that it's due to their moral fibre or good upbringing or self control. they genuinely, on some level, believe that they are a good person solely based on the strength of their physical abilities. they will resist the fact that it is largely down to chance that they were able to maintain such health. whatever they think they've built from scratch, the building blocks were already handed to them. not because they're more worthy of it, just by luck. and they really think they're worth more based on that sheer luck. i've met disabled people worth a hundred of the healthiest ableds alive.
