He had all the brains and all the unspoiled potential, but things would always come down to Declan and the holes he’d dig himself into just by whim of mouth and however many screws had come loose up there, whichever part of his brain wasn’t quite clicked into the idea that actions always had consequences. People very early on had come to learn that false words would fly as if they were nothing, and when one stays caught in the same town for most their life, memories stick around with all the stubbornness of youth itself. One minute you’re calling the cops to report your own supposed kidnapping over Friday night dinner with the family, the next minute you’ve been dubbed an pathological liar.
Skipping out on his higher education was as much of a spiteful middle finger up towards the world as was his entire teenage life, seeing everything that people thought of him and figuring, well what the hell? They’d think what they wanted, where was the point in trying to prove them wrong? Even at his highest intelligence, even Declan’s own honesty seemed to fall flat to those who were just around to hear the weird kid say something odd - and so, nine times out of ten, that’s exactly what he did. And at some point, maybe he really did lose sight of the person he actually did, opting to just follow the path of the freakish life he’d always lived.
Most days he wakes up feeling certain that not a single person would notice if he just up and poofed into thin air. And oddly enough, he felt totally fine with that. It wasn’t perfection and if the family he’d moved away from ever bothered to think back and remember their youngest son, maybe they’d be disappointed to see exactly how much potential he’d stripped away and wasted over the years, but living stringless and unburdened by anyone’s dusty old legacy felt perfectly fine to him.
An athlete, a basket case, a prince, and a criminal. All four stuck serving court ordered community service together. Jacob Wheeler decided to take his car out for a joy ride. Being drunk and crashing it should have landed him a harsher punishment, but when your parents know all the right people, it’s easy to understand why his sentence was reduced. Tensions run high at the track when you lose a race and a girl from the opposing team decides to rub it in your face. Chloe Stevens tried to keep her cool but before she knew it, she was jumping on the other girl. After the police escorted her off the premises, Chloe thought that was the end of it. The girl decided to press charges, but luckily for Chloe it was her first offense, and the judge went easy on her. It comes as no surprised that Max Carson is in the middle of all the chaos. She’s been on the receiving end of the law more times than she can count, and didn’t think “keeping the spirit of cherry bombs alive” was such a big deal. Fed up with seeing her face, the judge decided to give her a sentencing she wasn’t used to. He hopes Max will do some deep soul searching while she spends her days helping out the community she’s constantly trying to destroy. And finally, there’s Declan Brava, the cat lover to end all cat lovers. Declan believed his plan to kidnap all the cats in the area and raise them as his own was foolproof. He was caught the first night in. Showing excitement over the idea of going to jail and being away from the outside world, the judge crushed his hopes by sticking him in community service. These four come from very different worlds, but being caged in together is slowly making them realize they’re much more than the one dimensional label they’ve carried around since high school.
Kennedy Davis – best friend – Kennedy hated everyone in her school. Everyone but Declan. It’s not like they talked and she had heard about all the weird things he did, but figured if she had to be stuck at lunch with anyone, she wanted it to be him. Declan paid no mind to Kennedy when she first started to sit with him, seeing as she didn’t speak. Still, he appreciated Kennedy for what she was. The girl he could show his drawings of the female anatomy to with no judgement in return. One day, a group of boys found Declan’s notebook and started to tease him about his drawings. Kennedy stood up for him, and Declan realized he wanted Kennedy to be his best friend forever.
Hayley Malone – client – Declan frequently calls the hotline Hayley works at, and it didn’t take long for it to turn into a weekly exchange. It started out sexual but Declan began to admire Hayley and the two formed a weird friendship. He now calls to talk to her about random things, ranging from his cats to his deepest secrets. Though she thinks Declan might be the strangest person she’s ever met, Hayley appreciates the break he provides her from the typical clients she handles, and has even started to look forward to his calls. The two have no idea they live in the same town.
