Before volume 2 my Byler confidence was really high but of course I was still skeptical if we were actually gonna collect that endgame. REGARDLESS of Byler being endgame or not, I was AT LEAST expecting some buzzy scenes between them because, you know that's their thing whether you choose to view it as platonic or romantic. There was so much potential for Byler angst as well, with the fact that Will got powers, the Creelby tether etc. so, you know I was like well, even if we don't get Byler endgame at least we'll get tons of new scenes and it's gonna be a feast... I've never been this wrong in my life. Instead of sweet moments or heart to hearts we got Mike suddenly not being able to touch Will anymore, Mike not giving a shit about Will passing out, we got another Tammy reference and Mike not even being the first one of his friends to hug Will after coming out. The fact that the Duffers took their close bond in general away from us, forcefully, felt like the actual betrayal like I honestly would've been okay with no Byler endgame if we would've at least been able to see more of their dynamic as friends but the Duffers really said "NO MORE BYLER AT ALL" and basically retconned their friendship which had been established from the very first episode of the show. Between volume 2 and 3 silly me was like... well maybe the finale has some Byler action in store for us, potentially even a Will fake out death which Mike has to either witness or try to talk Will out of but again... NOTHING. And the fact that the Duffers originally didn't even write that tower scene for Byler and only added it because Noah begged them to at least give Byler some closure is just... insane.

The way these shots had set my expectations so high for an insane Will scene in the finale with possible fake out death but oh well...

Even after volume 2 I actually still planned on making another Byler video edit on my YouTube when the finale is out but honestly I lost all my motivation after watching it like... I just feel so badly treated as a part of the queer audience. The cast and creators literally mocked us in interviews, except for Noah no one actually cared about Will's queer arc and he was the only one to ever take Byler and us shippers seriously. Without him the Duffers wouldn't have given us any closure for Byler after the coming out scene. The Duffers really just reduced Mike to being Eleven's boyfriend in the end, made him suddenly not being able to even touch Will throughout volume 2-3, basically retconned his closeness with Will and made him end up just like his father. He was really just the Duffers' self insert after all... They literally broke up Rovickie, the only canon queer couple of the show which was btw developed and broken apart OFF SCREEN and basically only existed to "further" Will's arc. Will's love for Mike that has been built up for years was really just there to prop up a straight relationship and later dismissed as a silly little crush, we never got closure about the painting, we don't even know if Mike knows El never commissioned it. The fact that all the straight white men (Duffers, Shawn Levy, David Harbour) praised the ending, talked about "sticking the landing" just tells me everything I need to know. I could go on and on about this atrocious case of queerbait but I digress. I just can't bring myself to download new Scenepacks or even look at Byler scenes in general right now, let alone edit them when the show and creators let me down like this. I think I'm gonna need to distance myself from the show for a while. I'm just so disappointed that the Duffers really don't give a shit about queer people and that they as straight men feel the need to "lecture" queer people about self acceptance and unrequited love because their straight teenage crushes never worked out like what? And the fact that nothing in this show is realistic but when it comes to the gay character and his arc it suddenly needs to be. I'm sick and tired. This is not my first queerbait but definitely the most evil, especially since Byler was semi canon and a gay boy's feelings and suffering were used to uplift a hetero couple with no chemistry and severe relationship issues. Oh and the fact that the Duffers messed up Will's queer storyline so badly that his suffering became a meme for homophobes to laugh at is infuriating. Even more so the fact that the Duffers and the cast never spoke up about the obvious, blatant homophobia regarding Will Byers and also the homophobia us queer shippers had to deal with all these years. And then they call it a show about uplifting outcasts. Apparently "outcasts" only applies to white, straight nerds and not actual marginalized groups in society.

Just insane that all the subtext and obvious queer coding, the parallels, all the little details apparently never meant anything. My heart goes out to all of my fellow Bylers. ♡

The way looking at Mike in his camouflage/beanie outfit makes me feel nauseous... this is NOT the real Mike Wheeler, it's just a weird imposter... he feels like an entirely different character, we really didn't know him at all. Mike Wheeler died right after season 2.

So the Duffers basically just shut down Byler in a post volume 2 interview... wow I'm actually speechless. I want to say it can't get any worse but now I'm 100% sure we're gonna watch Will get a random epilogue boyfriend next week. I don't know if I should laugh like a maniac or just cry. Right now I just feel numb.
