Hugh Jackman as Gaston ( 1995 Australian Broadway Cast )
this is as perfect a time as any to remind folks I have not, and will not, use the live action b.atb as canon for this blog ( if only in the case of Gaston’s characterization whoops ). there’s some good stuff in it but mostly i had a lot of problems accepting certain aspects so it’s easier to just say nah to it all. oh and that, as always, huge ackman is the fc for my trash son.
anyways that’s it, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
’ I’m-I’m speechless. I really don’t know what to say. ’

" Shh shh -- you don’t need to say a word. ”
All cordial smiles and exuding self importance, the man pressed the ostentatiously large bouquet into her undoubtedly awaiting arms. Pride rolling off him as he pressed a finger to her lips. In spite of the condescension that seemed to naturally come to him -- there was a genuine sense of pride and open awe as he watched her intently.
“ Simply accept the roses as my gift to a beautiful woman who enchanted and delighted me with songs all evening. It’s not often a man, such as myself, is move to such a state. But here you have done just that, ” Gaston insisted with a soft laugh, eyes darting to the other flowers offered to her that evening. Each a pitiful handful and nothing like the bundle he had brought her. He was the best, after all, and only offered the best.
“ You’ve even convinced me to seek out more of these foreign operas. I don’t understand a word of any of it -- but if you are to be gracing the stage while they go on? There’s nothing more I’d need! ”
please everyone - i’m not going to survive the greatest showman with the boy lookin like this throughout the movie --
’ who said anything about the castle being enchanted ? ’

A voice cut through the silence - thunderous and ominous in timber and near enough to shake the very walls of the strange castle. The odd Candelabra - one that spoke - flung none-too-gently away from his grasp, its resounding shout of despair only ramping the man’s ever increasing terror further. Very little in this world seemed to phase a man like himself -- yet here Gaston stood. Unnerved and shaking minutely as the world he once knew to be so simple was overturned. An underbelly of dark and sinister creatures revealed to a simple minded man.
For the first time since he was a very small boy, Gaston felt helpless.
“ I -- I did, ” his voice wavered, a realization that further shamed him as a hand reached towards his gun. Fingers on its hilt and eyes staring into the ever looming darkness the castle held. A shape moved just beyond his site and it made his blood c h i l l. “ I may be dreaming but I know what I’m seeing with my own eyes. Demons. Black magic. That’s what this all is, isn’t it. ”
Leather clad feet shifted, the hunter pressing further towards the light of the hearth. Heart pounding and breaths shallow as he finally raised his gun. Lips curled into a snarl as he sought out in the darkness the voice. That shape. “ But don’t think for a moment you will make a man like me cower at the likes of this -- this unnatural place. I am Gaston, the greatest hunter this world has ever known. No man or beast alive will make me shrink like a wilting flowers. Not even those of sinister magic. ”

It’s got to be more something more special than that! ’ ’ This is yet another example of the late neoclassic Baroque period. ’ ’ If I didn’t know better, I’d think you had feelings for this monster. ’ ’ I thought I told you to come down to dinner! ’ ’ I’m not hungry! ’ ’ You’ll come out, or I’ll-I’ll-I’ll break down the door! ’ ’ Will you come down to dinner? ’ ’ It would give me great pleasure… ’ ’ We say please. ’ ’ You can’t stay in there forever! ’ ’ Fine! I’ll tell you when you’re older. ’ ’ I’ll not have you making up such wild stories. ’ ’ Let me go! Let me go, please! Don’t hurt me! I’ll do anything! Anything! ’ ’ I’m… I’m about ready to give up on this hunk of junk. ’ ’ This castle is your home now, so you can go anywhere you like, except the West Wing. ’ ’ I mean it this time! Could you read it again? ’ ’ Why don’t you read it to me? ’ ’ You mean, you never learned? ’ ’ I learned… a little. It’s just been… so long. ’ ’ Well, here, I’ll help you. ’ ’ What would you say if you and I took a walk over to the tavern and took a look at my trophies? ’
"Gaston! Since you're so tall and strong, I was wonderin' if you'd help me hang mistletoe? If it's no trouble for you, of course." She was hoping he'd say yes, as they'd be stuck under the mistletoe and Lottie would be more than happy to give him a kiss each and every time.
The voice that called out to him was every bit as sweet as it had been the first day he’d heard - able to cut through any conversation and catch his attention. Attention which he positively preened over, if he were to be truthful. Which is why he was so easy to dismiss to the two overly enthused American girls in favour of Mademoiselle Charlotte. Eyes bright and attentive, the foreign hunter uttered a soft pardon - met with the appropriate dreamy sigh no less - as he pressed forward through the grandiose abode.
“ Oh? Mistletoe you say -- ” came the knowing drawl as the brutish man strode forward, eagerness held at bay as he flashed her the brightest smile he could. Oozing charm and a haughtiness only found in a man like him. Peering upwards to the top of the door frame Lottie stood beneath, he made a show of humming and hawing to himself - fingers plucking the little piece of greenery from her with a low laugh. “ It would be my honour to help you. I am at your service, ” he tacked on with a sense of finality, pressing far closer than necessary to reach over her head.
As deft fingers tied the little piece above them, Gaston made a point of never once breaking eye contact with her.
“ There we are, Mademoiselle. It’s just as you asked -- but. ” A pregnant pause as Gaston finally broke their gazes, eyes trailing up slowly to the little tradition that hung over their heads. A tradition he would never pass up the opportunity on. “ It seems now that there are two of us beneath it. I wonder if traditions here are as thorough and strictly followed as they are back home, ” came the knowing purr, head slowly craning downwards as a large hand pressed into the door frame. Not truly caging the woman in - but a heavy suggestion to stay put as he relaxed into the pose.
“ If they are - I believe I’m owed a kiss. Isn’t that right, Mademoiselle? And, if I might say so - there’s no better person to. . . break in a freshly placed mistletoe than yours truly. ”
Hugh Jackman as Drover in Australia (2008)
. . . I -- didn't expect you to hit the target dead on. I . . . Oh.
The look on her face could be considered smug on anyone else, but Belle’s grin widens and she makes no attempt to hide it as she looks over hershoulder towards the man. The bow is still held in the grip of both her hands,no attempt made to even think oflowering it. This feels natural, shethinks. She hadn’t expected it to be thateasy to get to grips with, admittedly, but judging from the look on Gaston’sface, neither had he. There are arrows in his hand, ready to give to her, withtheir intended practice. Belle wouldn’t have bet money on herself for even reaching the target, let alone how well she had. She finally turns, lettinggo of the bow with one hand, and laughsat his words, head shaking.
“Oh, don’tlook so disappointed, Gaston!” she chastiseshim, words amused despite herself. “This is a good thing, isn’t it? This way you won’t have to spend all your time teaching me… and you saidyou wantedme to join your trips, did you not?” She reminds him with raised eyebrows, asthough daring him to disagree orchange his mind. Instead, she holds out a hand for another arrow. “Maybe it won’tbe long before I give you somepointers.”
’ Is it dangerous? ’

" It absolutely is - in fact there’s nothing quite on its level. One false step and -- ”
The hunter lunged forward with a snap of his fingers - posed just before Jack’s face. A leveled, knowing look as his eyes drifted down the pirate towards the wire snag just a step away. Innocuous in appearance and strength -- which is what made it so terrifying.
“ Snap. A tight vice around your ankle and you’re suddenly up in the air. . . But only if you’re so lucky as to experience it so mercifully. Too much weight could have it swinging you towards the ground. It could break a leg or even one’s neck if you really offset it -- ” Gaston practically purred at the idea, meeting the pirate’s gaze with a wide, knowing grin and raise of his brows.
“ Which makes it the perfect security system. Wouldn’t you agree? ”
