BUCKY !

when she pulls back from the embrace, bucky takes a moment to simply look at her and he wonders– how on earth he’d ever be able to have continued without her? he is eternally grateful for the GIFT that is having her in his life– to still be able to grow old and live with her. it’s not something he’d imagined he’d get lucky enough to do, even back in the day– so sure the war or SOMETHING ELSE would end it. ( after losing one sibling, it becomes difficult to NOT cling to the thought of more loss. ) but here they are– and in the aftermath of another battle that COULD have cost them everything, there is nothing he is more sure of that his plan to return HOME with her.

( cannot stand the idea of being apart any longer from his sibling, from the closest person he has left. )

“bex i– c’mon. i’ve done enough hiding. i’ve done enough of that and i CAN’T keep doin’ it anymore. especially when it means i’m thousands of miles away from you. i don’t wanna do it. i wanna come home and i want us to really get a chance.” pauses, feels lump form in his throat that he knows, around her, he doesn’t have to swallow and pretend isn’t there. he’s always been the caretaker, but he knows, he can be weak with her– they’ve earned that with one another by this point. “besides, we owe it to the people we don’t have anymore. we keep going, live, real live, for them.”

❝ OKAY , ❞ she murmurs , doubts falling away. she reaches out to take his hand into hers & give it a gentle & reassuring squeeze. the conviction in his eyes , his words is all she needs to see , to hear. her brother wants to come home. bucky wants to come home with her.

it's surreal , this moment. the thought of bucky returning with her to new york , being a part of her life again , has been a constant in her mind since learning he was still alive , but it’s always been a distant , almost wistful dream , as well. everything always seemed to fall apart the second peace appeared on the horizon , taking their shot of happiness with it. & to maybe , finally , actually have that hint of peace , grasp it tight between her fingertips , & know there’s not anything left in the universe to get in the way , rebecca isn’t quite sure how to feel.

it doesn’t feel real.

but it is.

❝ COME HOME then. ❞ & she smiles , a smile full full of warmth & love & a home from long ago. there’s tears in her eyes , but they’re happy tears , relieved tears.
