She couldn’t stiffen under his touch, his hold was that strong. Her body was lax, and she had a flash of fear again. Old company. She had spent too many nights half awake (waiting, yes) but watching. She counted the days, but almost not the years–she didn’t know exactly when she woke up to someone being butchered in the remains of the next ship over. She was young enough to where it was hard to (…help). Torn between running and helping, she was either too young to be of use. She didn’t remember the incident clearly except now.
Looking into that mask.
Her lips tightened at his odd taunt.
“Is this a game to you?”
The feeling of his gloves against her was strange. She had never had that much closeness (very few times), and she didn’t understand.
She snapped out of it. She thought of that slaughter, and a part of her did know why he was here.
“Funny, when you are the one asking,” she said. You had to be quick on the sand, dodge the animals that were only hungry. This wasn’t just hunger, was it? She hadn’t gotten far. She had told the old man, there was no point. So, she made up her mind to end it in her own way, and let the sand decide. She had an idea and she dug her heels in.
“You don’t have to kill them. Tell me you won’t and…”
The girl’s form was a pleasant (if still too light) weight in his arms, against his chest, and he studied her at this closer distance. Even helpless she looked fierce and determined, and for that alone he liked her. Few beings could have dreamed of standing up to him the way she was, and when they were at their full capacity.
Turning away from her speeder, he was already starting the trek back to his ship. She knew something, and he would find out what. And maybe she knew nothing that could help him, but -- but somehow he knew her presence was necessary.
“And you’ll what?” he prompted, doubting she could offer him anything with enough value to stop the massacre that had to occur with his departure. This planet worshiped trade, so it was no surprise that she would be quick to offer her own. This planet was also full of useless trash, so it would be even less of a surprise if whatever her offer was amounted to nothing.
