I had an idea, that seemed fairly straight forward on the surface: make an etched 3D wood cut scene of Tech working in a chaotic enemy computer lab, trying to get important data.

It was anything but straight forward, but we are almost there.

I drew the design from scratch in Adobe Illustrator, breaking out all the different layers. Then, I put them all into the laser cutter software, Lightburn, and got all the settings figured out.

And then, I decided to make it even more complex and add lights. The wiring map broke my brain. I nearly gave up many times.

We are now 96 hours in, with 14 individual layers, and 17 separate pieces, plus the electronics, but we are near the finish line!

I've been under a lot of stress lately, and haven't had much time for art. When that happens, I find it's nice to just pull up some refs and do some quick sketches. It helps keep the art skills in tune while reducing the pressure to produce finished work all the time.

Sketching it always nice, especially when you find yourself with a few extra moments in a hectic day to just unwind for a tiny bit.

I still find it hilarious that in the comic, Tech is able to sneak up on a guy and pick his pocket in full armor. Tech has less armor coverage than a lot of other troopers, but I still feel like it’s enough to make really obnoxious clanking noises if the wearer isn’t careful.

Tech is stealthy.

Just got back from a week-long art intensive studying horse anatomy with Terryl Whitlatch out at New Masters Village in Mancos, CO! I've followed Terryl's work for over 20 years, and her passion and expertise is unmatched—feeling challenged, refreshed, and like I want to draw a bajillion horses.

The week was made up of a whole lot of classroom time, balanced with hands-on horse sessions and some fun creature/character exploration on the last day—my brain is completely fried, but I have ZERO regrets. Can't recommend the lovely team out at NMV enough. ♥️
