“Thanks, Codsworth,” she murmured as she holstered the pistol from the vault. Wait, why do Vault suits have holsters? God, there wasn’t any space in her head for that question.
It was clear he wanted to return to his fruitless hedging, so she left him to it. His final suggestion, to head into Concord, seemed to be her only next step. Though as hours passed, as the sun sank into the horizon, bathing Sanctuary in golden and violet hues, she sat in the remains of her home, waiting for someone who would never come, whose tomb was only a short distance away. She stayed like that until exhaustion finally overtook her very soul, lying down on the frayed and broken tile, brushing away sharp edges and corners with the last of her strength.
Sondra felt a bittersweet sense of familiarity when Codsworth woke her the next morning. “Mum,” his metal eyes whirred and shifted to face her. “While I do immensely enjoy your company, young Shaun is somewhere out there.”
“I know,” she whispered, the cracked tiles feeling like ice against her face. Although she had to consider, what if she did find Shaun? Then what? Bring him back here? This graveyard of dead grass and shredded steel? Her skin came off the tile floor with a sucking sound; bits of leaves and dirt still clung to her face. Dusting it off, her eyes darted to Codsworth. “Concord, right?”
“You remember the way? Just across the southern footbridge out of the neighborhood and past the Red Rocket station,” he replied, with that fake chipper tone created solely to soothe a frustrated human. Smiling lightly, she gazed up at him. “No chance of you joining me?”
“Oh, mum, I’d love to, but these hedges aren’t going to trim themselves,” the fire of the thruster crackling as he whirred himself away back to said hedges. “I shall remain here and secure the home front!” he cried out, all before she had a chance to protest. It was fair enough; if she couldn’t even make it to Concord alive, it was probably better that way.
