Popular media has made given the ‘Death’ tarot card a bad rap. Lots of people assume it means you’re literally gonna die! That’s not true. It just represents a significant change or transition, the end of one phase and beginning of the next… like, say, moving out of your parents’ house, changing your career, or the transition from being alive to not being alive anymore… wait…
Just once, instead of people freaking out over Death and The Devil, I’d like to see someone draw The Tower and get that look on their face like an oncologist with bad news
Almost every time I get a reading I get the tower or death.
My life has been... Intense lately.
this blog’s become decidedly anti-WoW or at least WoW-critical lately hasn’t it?
one of the reasons I continue to invest so much time and love into the game is primarily the exceptional art team doing wonders with paint-texture models and zones on the game’s outdated engine - not an easy feat and a credit to how excellent these people are - general fun playing, the ability to have a swath of unique races to play as, and the phenomenal roleplay/fan community who pours so much love, time and care into their original characters and fanon for the world and races. seriously, 80% of my commissions are WoW characters and OCs, and every single one is interesting and fun to draw.
WoW’s huge universe has amazing world-building that offers players massive diving boards to jump off of and into, to enjoy the world as they see fit. it’s just that when it comes to current game canon and depth, it’s a severe short-stick for fans, and it begs the question of why they can’t do better
We have to face a hard truth.
Night Elves were always bad.
“maddie you love night elves”
you bet your ass I do, I love them for the same reason almost everyone else does - their character design, their aesthetic, their lore, their concept, their entire being on paper
they have always been good on paper. tyrande whisperwind is GREAT on paper and looks even better as a recognizable brand character like sylvanas windrunner, slapped on the cover of books and game boxes and posters.
but even in Warcraft 3, aside from telling Malfurion to fuck off she was never good. she made horrible decisions, she killed her own people in the warden dens. the most prominent image of grommash hellscream, featured on his wiki page and the second image in a google search of him, is him standing over a tattered sentinel banner with the corpses of dead sentinels hanging from the trees above him and their severed heads on his belt.
from vanilla through wrath, tyrande and the night elves were a passive presence in game. in cataclysm many of their lands were destroyed by deathwing or clear-cut, bombed, or invaded by the horde. in quests or dungeons she was outshone by malfurion, even told to hush. she allowed the night elf mages from dire maul to join the kaldorei again, which was supposed to be a good decision that was painted instead as controversial and was criticized by malfurion and maiev.
in mists of pandaria, tyrande was used in an alliance scenario not to show her battle prowess in a jungle - an environment akin to the jungles and forests her people fought in for thousands of years effectively - but to make rushed decisions and get schooled by varian, who shows that his tactics are superior, in a scene to illustrate his leadership and wisdom, not tyrande’s. the sentinels are given the task of protecting the bell from garrosh’s horde - it is stolen from under their noses in their own capital city without any difficulty.
in warlords of draenor, wardens retain the weirdly neutral stance they had in cataclysm during the firelands campaign, and go to draenor to protect khadgar. they fail on multiple occasions, khadgar often needing to protect himself with his own magic. cordana, a supposedly powerful and disciplined warden, easily falls sway to demonic influence and betrays khadgar and the player. she is killed in the next expansion in a dungeon.
in legion, tyrande spends her time chasing malfurion around val'sharah. her attempts to save the temple there are punctuated by the loss of ysera, an important dragon to night elves. in the suramar campaign, tyrande openly insults and sneers at thalyssra - something that is criticized, and was written in deliberately to close off the nightborne from joining the alliance so they could join the horde in the next expansion. this follows tyrande’s decision some years ago in cataclysm to let the shen'dralar rejoin the night elves, feeling that now was the time to welcome magic and mages back. this was criticized. now she suddenly sneers at the nightborne. this was also criticized. the majority of legion night elves that aren’t cenarion circle neutral druids, are ghosts. maiev and the wardens play a trifling role in the expansion, mainly as daily quest givers. shandris is moved from being parked in feathermoon stronghold doing nothing to parked in the hunter class hall doing nothing.
in battle for azeroth, teldrassil is burned, darnassus destroyed with it, kalimdor is taken for the horde. the night elves are left completely stranded among the alliance on the eastern kingdoms, assuming there are even any left at this point.
hard truth: blizzard has never known what to do with night elves or how to utilize them effectively outside of neutral parties in other existing factions (cenarion circle), and instead routinely uses them and their flagship characters as confusing props for other character developments, brand merchandising, and easy story fodder. for every one WoW player who likes night elves, five or ten more despise them, and with such a track record for no productivity to the story and no draw outside their surface aesthetic or lore it’s not hard to see WHY so many people dislike night elves.
we’re sort of kidding ourselves. the WoW community has done more good for night elves with theories, fan characters, writing and roleplay, art and fan-canon/fan-world building than blizzard ever have. the best thing that’s happened for night elves wasn’t even for them - it was the outstanding suramar/nightborne campaign in legion - something that will become irrelevant in battle for azeroth when the nightborne and thalyssra stand beside the horde and watch teldrassil burn down.
@commander-kulan
The kal’dorei have been violently against the arcane since the time of The Sundering. Tyrande’s venom about “mana addicts” (the shal’dorei) is honestly nothing new. My biggest headtilt was the Night Elves supposedly allowing mages back in, though, as I don’t play a Night Elf, I’ll admit I don’t know why that was done.
Kal’dorei aren’t just druids. They’re also matriarchal (yeah, stuff yourself, Malfurion), and amazing warriors and archers. I feel like that tends to be ignored and forgotten, which is a shame. Hunters in Legion are treated to seeing representatives from just about every race come together in the Trueshot Lodge, and one of my biggest joys was seeing a night elf working alongside blood elves and Forsaken and everyone being all right with this.
i don’t think you read my post.
Tyrande claims to be against highborne, magic-using kaldorei or former kaldorei who may have sided with and/or ignored Azshara’s tyranny during the events of the War of the Ancients, hence her disgust and mistrust of Thalyssra and the Nightborne. This does not make sense to bring this up now, though, because in Cataclysm she permitted the Shen'dralar to return to night elf culture - a faction of elusive remaining highborne who locked themselves inside eldre'thalas siphoning and leeching life from a demon to stay alive, their mad prince eventually turning to manslaughter to allow them to keep living. they fit all the qualms tyrande previously held, but allowed them back, with criticism from other night elves. now tyrande seems to be doing a 180 on her new mindset regarding magic-using former highborne and returning to her disgust and distrust of them when faced with the plight of thalyssra and the nightborne, which makes no sense because we already know she had a change of heart for the shen'dralar.
when she lets magic-using highborne in, she’s criticized and looks bad. when she doesn’t let them in, she’s criticized and looks bad. either way her flip-flopping attitude and actions are specifically written that way so they can be used as flimsy justifications for gameplays devices (playable night elf mages, horde-only playable nightborne) that also result in making her, and by proxy other night elves, look equally unlikable and incompetent.
Story props for in game mechanics.
for additional fairness, when I talk about bad writing in WoW I am not necessarily singling out the actual writing team, per se. the reality is more likely that the main directors and development team pitch and install the main story themes and ideas and decisions, and then let the writing team try to justify them and work out the kinks. WoW’s story is also stretched out over canon novels written by different authors, again using the concept and stories that the main directing team pitched to them. all of this creates a hodge-podge mess, of devs rolling out things like updated faction wars, faction-locked allied races, and major story and game scenarios like the burning of teldrassil, and then letting the writing team frantically try to come up with ways that make it all work from a writing perspective. it’s an unfathomably difficult task and I don’t really blame the writing team being unable to make it work more than half the time.

if you need binders/breast forms/makeup/etc but don’t want your parents to know, now is the best time to get it.
you can order whatever it is online and when the package comes in if the ask what it is you can say something like “it’s a secret!” or even just sssh them. they’ll assume it’s a present for whatever holiday you celebrate and probably won’t press the issue.

It’s really funny to watch people say billionaire CEOs are constantly working hard when they earn billions through stocks.
Jeff Bezos literally earned $32+ billion through stocks alone.
The people working in his overheated warehouses are working far harder than he is and that’s a fact.
To say billionaires are billionaires only through hard work is a complete misunderstanding of how companies even operate. We see growing income inequality under capitalism because the system is literally designed to operate that way. Not because some gifted CEOs work 800x harder than the average person. They rely on millions of other people for that money.
Yet more than 80% of the income tax comes from billionaires. Billionaires are only allowed to keep 50% of what they earn because of a filthy income tax the government is forcing on the people
https://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2017/06/daily-chart read dumbass
They aren't starving. Tax them at 90%. Fuck them.
Friendly reminder: if your government representatives sell you out for a handful of silver coins it’s okay to construct guillotines on their front lawn
Okay I’ve been sorting through the ratfuck of information this past hour because fiscal conservatives deserve to drown
A bunch of weird amendments got tacked onto the end of a very exploitative tax reform bill that is a complete eyesore to read and about 400 pages long. I’m gonna try and sort some of that relevent info into digestable and understandable nugs
You can read most of this better in an NYTimes article
Deductions are mostly gone, with the exception of charity donations, mortgage interest and retirement savings. It eliminates most medical expense deductions as well as state and local tax deductions (This will suck hard for anyone in a high-tax area like NY.)
It’ll eliminate deductions for interest payments on school loans, theft, and moving expenses. This is huge for anyone who is a student or lives in an area with crime. This bill is making being poor harder.
The plan will eliminate personal tax exemptions (claiming for people in your family) but DOUBLE estate tax exemption (primarily used by top 1% income holders)
The plan lowers max corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent. It’s going to cut taxes on profits earnt in other countries and incentivise work in the U.S. This is generally great for business but amazingly bad for U.S. workers.
In the long run you can see taxes rising on folks earning less than $30 000 a year.
Amendments:
The GOP literally scrawled a bunch of bullshit into the margines of this plan a few hours ago so some dodgy stuff wiggled it’s way through (this is just what I’ve found so far):
- A wildlife preserve has been OK’d for oil drilling
- A conservative private college in michigan has dodged the deduction cuts
- Life is now officially recognised as beginning at conception
Some pissed off thoughts:
This tax plan is the republican wishlist from hell.
The groups affected by these policy changes will be the disabled, LGBT and non-nuclear families, PoC (notable a huge part of the black community), students, women and young people. Anyone who was already struggling in the economy is going to have an even tougher time.
The obscenely wealthy will be like pigs in shit.
I know I usually just shitpost and draw but this is literally class war and all of you without rich dads should all be very pissed.
