daniel stands at the island, cutting vegetables for dinner. through the open window, he can hear his family, talking and laughing amongst themselves. for the first time in over six months, everyone is HERE. sam and miguel are on summer break from school, robby and tory don’t have another competition until mid - september, and lexy and anthony opted to stay home instead of running off with their friends today. (he knows they missed their older siblings, even if they won’t admit as much.) perfect opportunity to make a big meal.
he doesn’t turn to look who it is when the back door opens, pushing the diced carrots to the side of his cutting board. a few moments later, arms wrap around his waist. ' is everybody doin’ alright out there? ' his husband nods, grip tightening as he pulls daniel into his chest. when he speaks, it’s soft, his five o’clock shadow rubbing against daniel’s ear. ' oh yeah? ' he sets down his knife, turning as much as he’s able to meet johnny’s eyes. ' tell me about it. '
( BE ) — " jessica, " banky repeats, as if he's trying to commit the name to memory. he doubts it, knowing alyssa's track record, but you never know. the girl is prone to surprising him. he doesn't even really care much for his beer anymore, instead seriously itching for a cigarette. he's pretty sure she's got his smokes, too, in that stupid little purse of hers. (ugh.) a hum, there, banky quick to pick up on the little seed of bitterness in the other's voice. it's not jealousy, no, that sound he's become incredibly keen on discerning, thanks to the many years attached to holden mcneil. only jealousy. " not many of the women, but y'know. some. " he almost makes a joke at alyssa's expense — and some lesbians even date men! — but that's more habit than it is genuine malice. he's working on breaking it. " and you'd be surprised the number of straight guys that get duped into coming here. usually by their gay friends. " a shrug, and he continues running his mouth. " hence why i'm here again. " a beat. " yeah, alyssa's good. one of the better options here. "
' yeah, you’ve got a point. ' bisexual, he remembers, from a conversation months ago, in a different bar. he was still with dewey, and jessica was in an on phase with a girl she’d been seeing for a while. (blonde and tan, with a handful of tattoos and multiple ear piercings, regaling them with stories about her shitty ex - boyfriend.) it was … interesting. enlightening. terrifying. ' but jessica isn’t one of ‘em. ladies only. ' daniel takes a swig from his beer as @mallratcomics keeps talking, an eyebrow raising. ' you got " duped " into coming here? ' and that’s a regular occurrence for you? ' why stick around, then? that desperate for a … ' he pauses, glancing at the bottle in the other man’s hand. ' five dollar pete’s wicked ale? ' that wouldn’t be his choice, but daniel’s a little particular about his alcohol. ' that’s good. since i think we’re both at risk of being ditched. ' he can see alyssa’s hand on jessica’s knee from here, and his best friend’s got that look in her eyes. the one that means she’s probably going home with the person in front of her. at least one of them is getting laid. he looks back at alyssa’s friend. ' i’m daniel, by the way. larusso. '

actually. per this gifset — and in honor of father's day — let's talk about daniel, sam, and mr. miyagi for a minute.
when daniel meets mr. miyagi, he's been without a father for years. it's just him and ma. and ma is great! she's the best ma daniel could ask for. but raising a child takes a village, and in lucille's case, it took an okinawan one. mr. miyagi was everything daniel needed. a teacher, a confidant, a friend, a dad. and the old man wasn't perfect. there were times he handled things poorly, or was dismissive of what daniel was going through. he was always there when daniel needed him, though, and taught daniel some of the most important lessons he'd ever learn. ones he goes on to pass on to his students, friends, his family, his partner.
and of course, sam was daniel's first baby. she was his first student, too. she could kick the butt of anyone that tried messing with her by the time she was in elementary school. and the thing about sam, his samantha, his wonderful little girl, is that she's like him. she's bright and charming and kind. she's also hardheaded and prideful and angry. and she finds herself in a position not unlike daniel's, where people see her and decide she's their enemy. because she isn't like them, and so they try their hardest to prove they're better than her. but sam is stronger than she looks. jersey tough ... no, valley tough. just like her father before her. and when sam ends up in difficult situations, when she's afraid she might not be able to get through this, daniel looks at his daughter and tells her she can. that she's enough. that she isn't alone. she has her dojo, her friends, her family, her senseis. her father. her grandfather, even if only in memory. and that empowers her to trust herself, to believe in her abilities, to go out onto the mat or into the world and show everyone what larussos are made of.
The Karate Kid Part III || Cobra Kai, 4.10
Who is the one person they never want to disappoint? What gift would utterly destroy them (in a good / bad way)? How do they react when someone they love is hurt?
one. who is the one person they never want to disappoint?
oh my god, mr. miyagi. after everything that happened in the fall of 1985 with cobra kai, and more specifically with silver, daniel made it one of his missions in life to be the kind of man mr. miyagi is, to pass on the lessons he’s taught him, etc. and this isn’t a bad thing in and of itself. mr. miyagi was a great man, the mentor and father daniel needed, the teacher and grandfather sam will always remember fondly. but daniel has a tendency to become so single - minded in his resolve to preserve mr. miyagi’s legacy he loses sight of himself and what he needs. and that ultimately does harm to daniel and others around him, especially johnny and sam, who are desperate to make daniel understand it’s okay to not be so strictly miyagi in how he functions, in life and karate, since he’ll often reject things he thinks mr. miyagi wouldn’t approve of. but mr. miyagi told daniel he would find his own way someday, and only through accepting that is daniel able to become the man he’s always been meant to be, and build a life that feels like his, through and through. growth and healing aren’t linear, though, so there are still days when daniel finds himself having the knee - jerk reaction of mr. miyagi wouldn’t want me doing this. he’s working on it.
two. what gift would utterly destroy them (in a good / bad way)?
naturally, anything to do with mr. miyagi wrecks him. some of the few times we see daniel get choked up are when he’s given or shown things relating to mr. miyagi, such as his love letters to yukie and the sekai taikai records. he told mr. miyagi, when he was seventeen and frightened, that he didn’t care to have mr. miyagi material belongings. all he wanted was mr. miyagi. now, all daniel has are mr. miyagi’s things, and he’s still trying to make his peace with that.
in a similar vein, being given things that belonged to his dad never fails to wreck daniel. he’s had antonio’s rosary since he was eight years old, when he helped dad hold it while doing their prayers at night. before he found his own signature scent, ma let him use dad’s cologne, teaching him how to put it on properly. there are shirts in his closet that used to be antonio’s, ones ma or his aunts + uncles see him wear and get struck by déjà vu. when he turned thirty, ma gave him dad’s wedding ring to keep. when he’s having a hard time recalling what dad sounded like, or how his hands felt when he lifted daniel onto his shoulders, daniel will sit with one of dad’s things and let himself get lost in the memories for a little while.
three. how do they react when someone they love is hurt?
to be blunt about it : intensely. daniel can be hotheaded, and is known for being deeply loyal and fiercely protective of his people. this includes family, friends, and students. and it cannot be stressed enough that, in spite of his kind nature and distaste for aggression without reason, daniel is a dangerous man. you’re lucky my dad didn’t kill you, anthony once said. unbeknownst to him, and everyone else in the karate war, just seven months later, daniel would find himself about to do that very thing. kill someone for harming his loved ones. sam. johnny. his very worst moment, and yet he can’t say he would’ve regretted it if miguel and sam had gotten to the cobra kai dojo just a little later, after he’d done the deed. of course, he isn’t always driven to such extremes when his people get hurt. but know that an angry daniel is not one to mess with, if you intend to leave with your body and ego fully intact.

he didn’t break his fall properly. stupid: he knows how to break a fall. it’s one of the first things you learn. don’t land on your elbow. don’t land on your fucking head. conor holds an ice pack there; it’s melting, and it feels like the blood is streaming through his fingers. it’s in his eyelashes. all he can see is blood. he wipes it with his other hand and it comes away red. it doesn’t hurt — at least, he doesn’t feel pain. if he stood up, would he be woozy? ‘it looks worse than it is,’ he says, and his voice comes out steady on its feet, if rough and drawn from the back of his throat. ‘you know head wounds bleed pretty heavy, right? i’m fine.’ what, does he want him to wear a helmet? he snickers, then groans. all right, it throbs a little.
daniel presses his lips together, slowly kneeling on the top step to the sparring deck. incidents like this make him wonder if dutch and kreese need active supervision during their classes. ' believe me, i am well - aware of that. we’ve dealt with a fair share of them in our time. ' he reaches a hand towards the ice pack, waiting for conor’s nod of permission before pulling it away from his forehead. it could be worse. it doesn’t look like he’ll need stitches. but he would rather conor weren’t injured at all. he tosses the ice pack into the grass, holding out a white rag. ( it’ll get grabbed in a little bit, when they do their post - class sweep of the dojo. ) ' hold this against it. firmly. gotta stop the bleeding. '
( SS ) — " wait. wait, wait, wait ... you're moving to california? " nose scrunches as she tilts her head, clear surprise coloring her face. she'd figured out what was going on between them long before the others. call it intuition, or whatever. but ... a cross - half - country move is ... massive. " when? have you found a place? do you need money? a housewarming gift? anything? "

' yeah. right after graduation. ' it’s still a little weird, hanging out with sienna. they spent so long at odds. she’s made a point of being kind since he got back to school, though, and it doesn’t hurt to have a cobra by his side. helps to keep the others in check. ( if john hadn’t dropped out in the fall, they would be attached at the hip. daniel is sure of that much. ) it’s nice to talk to someone besides his family, too. even when her questions stress him the fuck out. ' don’t have a place yet. gonna stay at a hotel while we look. ' and burn through too much of their limited funds, probably. ' and we’re not takin’ a whole bunch of stuff with us. '
one day i’ll figure out his star wars au for real, but it’s important to know daniel’s 1000% force sensitive.

" one father in, the other ... actually, she doesn't quite know where the other father went, but she sure hasn't heard the second set of adult footsteps come in through the door. there's a soft glow from antonio's door, undoubtedly the lamp as the boy still sits up at his desk reading. and from lauren's door, only a nightlight illuminates the princess - pink room. what an angel. both of them. " she did make me read the entire magic tree house book, though — but she was out like a little light once i got toward the end. " a soft smile, emma meeting mr. larusso in the kitchen. " did you two have fun? "

' oh, good. thought she might try to stay up until we got home. ' lauren’s done it before, running out of her room upon hearing the door open, launching herself at them to demand goodnight kisses. she must’ve been extra tired. between that and emma’s soothing voice … POINT, NOLAN! ' night of the ninjas? been her favorite lately. ' daniel shrugs his jacket off, setting it on the counter as he looks over the kitchen and living room. there are no toys in sight, just the snake and crane stuffies sitting on one end of the couch. ( gifts from louie when antonio and lauren were born, respectively. they’re baby yous, cuz! ) and, even with the TV playing an old episode of jeopardy!, he can hear the dishwasher running. emma might have to be their go - to babysitter from now on. ' we had a great time. the devils beat the penguins. '
