We each have the power to make the world a little kinder and a little better. It can be small, starting with being kind and helping people you know. That enough already makes the world better! đ

The bookselling behemoth is making life harder for writers, but so is the public perception that art doesnât need to be paid for
âPeople have always felt a sort of ownership over art, and thatâs actually good. Itâs why you keep a book on your shelf and return to it, itâs why you hang a picture on your wall that speaks to you. But when this gets out of hand and you mistake access or a personal connection with your rights, as happens so often in our Internet age, it leads to a dangerous sense of entitlement. Thatâs why readers feel empowered to complain, directly to the creator, that a book or show doesnât have absolutely everything they want: the romantic pairing theyâd hoped for, the language they find most friendly, the ending they desired. And itâs also why, for instance, the last Harry Potter book leaked on the internet before it was officially published: fans saw the book as something they were owed, not the product of labor that deserved compensation. Not that J.K. Rowling needs more moneyâbut she, and all authors, deserve to have their work recognized as work.
âConsumers hold a pernicious power, so this trend towards free content wonât reverse itself unless we want it to. This is a sad thing, and we will all be much worse off if we can only hear stories from people who can afford to write.â
Please please please do NOT pirate books if you want to keep having books to read. The median income for full-time authors in 2017 is reported at $20,857. That means half of all authors reporting income made LESS.Â
And of the authors that reported that they were, in fact, full-time authors, only 63% had ANY earnings to report. The average of those who did earn something was $43,247. Which means, looking at the difference between the median and average, the average is heavily weighted by the superstars.
MOST of your favorite authors are either working a second (or third, or more) job, have a partner who earns more money, or is living hand-to-mouth, or some combination of the three.Â
Libraries are your friends. Most have ebook collections now. I know readers gotta eat, but writers do too.
Signed, Someone whose book isnât out for another 4 months, and is ALREADY being pirated :(Â
Oh gosh :( this really hit me: âThis is a sad thing, and we will all be much worse off if we can only hear stories from people who can afford to write.â
A post from Maggie Stiefvaterâs deactivated Tumblr about pirating killing the Raven Cycle boxset
Another post about how piracy meant that her publisher cut the print run on the last book because the previous book wasnât selling as well and how she teamed up with her brother to prove that online piracy was responsible for the lower sales
If you cannot afford to buy books, please go through your public library! When you get a library card, youâll also be able to sign up to rent audiobooks; a librarian can help you if youâre not sure how. Libraries are an important part of the book ecosystem, and when you get a book for free from the library, youâre still supporting the author.
just throwing this post out there bc i break down how an author gets paid, for anyone whoâs confused about how pirating books can tank an authorâs career
Just a reminder - if your library doesnât carry the book you want, youâre allowed to ask for it, and they may buy it! Check your libraryâs website. Theyâll have contact information and may even have a request form.

How to Leave the Past Behind
When youâre feeling overwhelmed with your sadness and loss, itâs hard to believe that your life will ever change, or youâll ever be able to smile or laugh again. But the truth is you will â it wonât always be this bad â and there are things you can do help move on with your life:
1. Decide to face your pain. An unresolved past never really goes away. You may think you have buried your anger and pain but the hurt is still there and it will surface later on. If you donât face what happened, and the feelings it unleashed, you will end up being ruled by your subconscious mind. So try and find the courage to revisit all the pain.
2. Accept thereâs nothing you can do to change the past. Whatâs happened has happened, and whatâs done is done. Thereâs nothing you can do to turn back the hands of time, or to rewrite the story so the endingâs happier. But you can change how you think, and you can start over again, and build a different future thatâs not poisoned by the past.
3. Be grateful for the good times. Thereâs usually something good that you can be thankful for. You donât have to pretend that everything was bad â or write off any good times and happy memories.
4. Consciously let go and set your focus on the future - Donât let the baggage, or the failures of the past, affect your identity or self esteem. You are not what you did, or how you acted previously. Youâre not just a product of what happened to you. You are valuable, unique and you have so much to give. Youâre the author of your future; you control your destiny.
5. Remove your past from your future. We all have a tendency to think that the past will morph into our future â and become our lot in life. But that doesnât have to happen. The futureâs a blank page. You can change your expectations and work towards those goals. Instead, look hard for the exceptions â the times when things went right â and notice what you did that resulted in success. You still have those same strengths, skills and great qualities.
6. Be realistic and take small steps at first. You canât snap your fingers and find that life has changed. Accept it will take time, and you will still have some bad days. But if you keep on going then the past will lose its grip.
