hi Faebelina! I want to ask how does one get better at drawing? ;_; i know you may say 'practice' but I dont know what to practice. any tips? btw huge fan of your overwatch art! <3
Hey, Anon!
(Everything I’m about to say is personal opinion and the particular way I have been tackling learning.)
1.So in the beginning, it’s much more important that you are drawing often rather than drawing “correctly”. Your muscles need to adapt to certain movements. You will see a lot of improvement just by doing.
2.Once you’ve done that for a while you’ll naturally notice areas you need to work on. For example, you might not be great at faces. So you study faces– drawing from reference. As you draw, study why the features of the face sit the way they do. But most importantly, draw iterations. Instead of focusing hours on one good face, spend that time making iterations of several types of faces. This video can explain more about why that is beneficial and how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0ufz75UvHs
3.If you’re noticing your drawings look stiff, work on gestures. These are quick (30sec-2min) doodles that push you to understand the point of a pose or movement rather than focusing on the edges. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j39NqwL7s4
4.When you get around to coloring and you feel frustrated you can study color theory. Some people just naturally have a feel for good colors and others need to work a bit more, so whichever you are is okay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kQllLy_X4I
5.I don’t recommend doing a lot of finished pieces early on. I think it’s great to push yourself to the extent of your knowledge but I also think your time is better spent on fundamentals rather than polishing. This is something I wish I could do over.
Lastly I will leave you with some of my favorite resources for learning:

Study: Apple
Went back to the basics today with the apple study. This time led by Ahmed Aldoori over on Proko! This was my first time drawing this lesson digitally versus colored pencils or graphite--and it is an entirely different experience.
Ahmed goes into brushes and stylization on top of lighting, focal points, and the use of blurring and sharpness. And his use of bristle brushes is just *chef's kiss*

I'm so glad I found this site, it has so many good free tutorials for all drawing topics, but especially for digital artists that are trying to get a grip on painting. Highly recommend!
I need to get better at posting here-- Here's my latest painting of my lion OC, Maisha~
Blonde dobies have been hard to come by, so I tried my hand at designing my own~ She is named after Major Samantha Carter from Stargate, cuz that's what we've been binging lately lol
Sam is an EDD (Explosive Detection Dog) for the Air Force! My best friend's dad growing up was part of a K-9 unit for the Navy, and I thought his german shephard partner was the coolest dog in the world. Still do! I even got to go watch him train once and it was a really special experience. Lots of memories crept up while I drew this lady! <3

Sick day means dobie tiiiiiiime. And not me jamming to the Oliver & Co. soundtrack while I did this xD
DTA for whispersofancient on DA, who wanted their puppies drawn with her mum, Rain <3 Poor mum has had one of her favorite toys shredded! I was inspired to name this little gal something rain/water related, so meet Talia (which is hebrew for "morning dew").

WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? IN YOUR EYES FORSAKEN ME! IN YOUR THOUGHTS FORSAKEN ME! IN YOUR HEART FORSAKEN MEEEEEEEE?
Meet Surge! My only dobie boy thus far, who was dumped and abandoned, only to find passion in metal and rock music <3 He sings in an underground club and is thriving! Tho he is one of those sentimental dogs that still wears his collar.

Pink~ Little Nellie (runt) Teal~ Lucy Next week's post will probably be the 3 girls grown up cos this was fun <3
If y'all haven't checked out Scarlett's or Crystal's doggos, go give them a look! If you're lucky, you may be able to snag an adopt. They're all so adorable! Now to go replay Red Dead~ hehe
Ah, 2024. You were a journey lol.
The running personal themes this year were: ...Being confident and standing up for myself. To the people I love most, to strangers, and to the hardest one--me. ...Growing and evolving my relationship with my husbando, IndeedAllen <3 ...Learning how and when to brush things off my shoulder, and not beat myself up over the little things. ...Making amazing friends. ...Experiencing about every kind of heartbreak there is in one year Lol ...Coping with the deaths of both family and friends. ...Fulfilling a career goal and realizing a dream. ...Fertility issues. ...Facing fears and working on things that envoke anxiety. ...Being proud of myself for the first time in a long time, honestly. Proud to be in my own skin, proud of my accomplishments and how strong and outgoing I've become this year. There was a lot of hardship, but I feel like I've grown so much from it. Artistically, this year: ...I got my first indie studio gig and wore a few different hats (Splash Artist, Promotional Artist, Creature Concept Artist.) Through that, I learned a bit about pipelines, QA, and collabing with other artists. ...I spent, and am still tbh, a lot of time trying to be happy with a lineart style of drawing. I love my painted renders, but I also want to be proficient in a quicker lined style. Nothing ever looks satisfying imo. Still working on that! ...This year had so many ups and downs personally that my art suffered until about October. That was when I decided to buckle down and really give art another go. I'm still on that high, though I've just been getting lazy and gaming more recently. I will be trying to get stricter with myself about my weekend schedule! Going into 2025, I would like to make more time for studies, maybe a few classes, and ofc, finding more work. I would also like to start working on my dream of getting a children's book illustrated and published. And to post tutorials and more OC development <3 Thanks for reading! Commission for Parallel3 on Deviantart of their growlithe OC <3
My blue lady, Dejynx. I have yet to finish a character sheet for her after 10 years, but at least I finally got her druid forms done xD She is a mom, a shan'do, and druid of Ashamane. She is also my persona <3
My Red Dead self-insert OC, Hattie, and her mare, Bella. Bella is an insert of my own horse <3
Palworld fan art! <3
These are some WoW OCs that I don't play much anymore, but I still love them! My demon hunter may come back in War Within or Midnight, just waiting on story progression to be released in-game. Enjoy!
Once upon a time, I used to really enjoy drawing felines. TLK style is how I first learned to draw, really. I found other passions, but big cats still hold a warm place in my heart. If you're curious about a TLK commission, I do draw big cats still, but no longer in the exact TLK style. Its been really important to me to get away from the trademark noses, eyes, paws, etc. A more accurate representation of my style is my blue lady up there^^
