Someone not liking your work is definitely not fun. it takes me a whole lot of energy for me to take a rigid critique and turn it into something with a more positive tone that I can work with. It’s a skill! It definitely gets easier to see past that first stab of hurt to the constructive side of things.

That being said, sometimes I get comments that aren’t constructive and you’ll find me howling like a witch to the blood moon while burying a curse about those

It is hard, but here’s a good formula:

something you like about the work -> issue you have -> suggestion on how to improve -> another thing you liked about the work

So for example: “The cat in your sketch has such a great expression, she looks so happy on her windowsill. Looking at the shadow in the corner though, her tail blends in too much, it’s hard to see. Since the light is coming from the right you could consider putting a little highlight on top to make it more distinct. I also love her paws, they look soft enough to touch!”

Sometimes you can say “I’m not sure how to fix that” too.

What should be in a constructive criticism:

Visibility - is the work clear, is anything blurred, blended, or jumbled?

Technical errors - ways you as someone who knows how to do this work see a tool or technique used incorrectly

Confusing - is there some important information missing? Are you not understanding the message? Is it too much?

Think along these lines. Aesthetic preferences aren’t critiques. If it’s not your thing aesthetically don’t say anything and move on.

If there’s intent to fix, I really don’t get offended by feedback! But if anything has the tone of “I don’t like this, this is bad, you are bad for making this” I will lose my mind
