Pam Beesly (The Office, 2005)
girls with acne are absolutely amazing.
girls with cystic acne, girls with minor acne, girls with any and all types of acne in between.
girls with painful boils and cysts. girls with swelling in their faces. girls with large red bumps and lumps.
girls with smaller pimples that cover their entire face. girls with acne on their forehead, girls with acne on their cheeks and jaw, girls with acne on their chin.
girls who have chronic acne. girls who feel like their skin is never clear. girls whose skin is clear sometimes, but still break out frequently.
girls who use acne medication and skin treatments. girls who don’t.
girls who cover their acne with foundation and concealer. girls who don’t.
girls who have dermatillomania and pick at their acne, making it painful and bloody.
girls who feel like their acne is ruining their life. girls who know their acne does’t define them.
you are so cool and beautiful. i know it sometimes feels like girls aren’t “supposed” to have acne, and i know it’s hard seeing other girls with clear skin and feeling like you’re lesser. i promise you you aren’t, and you deserve to be celebrated.
dear straight girls: please stop calling yourselves and friends lesbians as a joke and posting photos of you kissing another girl on social media just because you think it’s “hot” and you’ll get more likes
sincerely, an actual lesbian
happy pride month to all of you out there, whether you can join in the celebrations or not, i’m proud of who you are and how strong you are.
allow flowers to grow on the places in your heart that people left hollow
here’s a though, instead of having a gay character, why not have a character who also happens to be gay. don’t mistake having a lgbtq+ character as having good representation. if their sexuality is the epitome of their characterisation, there is something done wrong. we are more than our sexualities. give us positive representation by giving us well written characters. please and thank you.
Nobody 👏 wants 👏 to see 👏Asian roles 👏 given 👏 to 👏 white people
you’re not selfish for wanting to be treated well
artists;
draw whatever you want
whenever you want
practise practise practise anywhere
do it for you
don’t care about what people will say
your art is part of you
it’s the best thing in the world dude
and it will become even better
be your favourite artist
and please have fun
maybe straight people should be less concerned about why we didn’t tell them earlier and more concerned about what it is about them that made us feel unsafe enough not to come out before
fic writers i promise you–on my life–that readers remember that finn’s skin is dark brown.
i promise that if you use a descriptor besides “the darker skinned man” in relation to all the characters around him, people will know who he is in your sentence.
e.g. the sun’s golden rays made his dark amber skin glow as it slid lower in the sky.
e.g. the harsh white light surrounding his body roughened the soft lines of his face and made his skin appear greyish as though he were a wraith.
e.g. the only imperfection marring his skin was the raised brown scar that slashed jaggedly across his back. (finn’s skin’s rich with melanin, so even if his fresh scar’s initially raw and pink, eventually it’ll heal to a brown shade–either slightly lighter, same tone, or slightly darker)
i promise that you can describe him as you do rey or poe and your readers won’t forget that it’s finn you’re talking about.
i promise you, you can describe poe without making him sound like a white dude.
n.k. jemisin’s a master at writing her characters, who are predominantly people of colour. for this reason, she usually describes them in relation to each other and doesn’t rely on their skin tones. she explicitly describes her white characters’ skin tones to flip the dominant perspective that assumes white as default. here are some of her tips:
describing characters of color
describing characters of color pt. 2 (some of her rowling thoughts are ehhh, because rowling does otherise her characters of colour, but this is an old post)
describing characters of color: other people’s poc
other resources:
7 offensive mistakes writers make
writing with color: poc and food comparisons (john boyega can call himself chocolate and black people might describe him as such, but you probably shouldn’t)
writing with color: words for skin tone
words to describe hair (i’ve read a couple fics where y’all are clueless about finn’s hair)
describing natural hair
writing with color’s colorful critiques
describing poc and avoiding caricatures
writing authentic characters of colour in first person pov
in depth guide to drawing different ethnicities
ok but .. insulting someone’s laugh or smile is possibly.. the worst.. why would u try 2 make someone self conscious about the way they express their joy.. like ?
do not lower your standards, you deserve good things.
Loving yourself is not (necessarily):
Thinking you’re gorgeous
Not wanting to change anything about your body, personality, or life
Loving yourself is:
Knowing you have inherent worth regardless of your physical appearance or life circumstance
Knowing you deserve good things
Wanting to take care of yourself because you deserve good things
Let yourself make AND learn from your mistakes.
why dont we ever talk about how movies condition girls to associate glasses and curly hair with ugliness because that is so fucking damaging to young girls who grow up seeing girls who look like them always be the “before” of every makeover
read this post. read it again. read it two more times. read it aloud. i want this to be ingrained into peoples’ minds
