Can I ask what brushes you use for your art?? Theyāre all so cool
Hello, and thank you so much!!! :D Honestly Iām just gonna infodump on ya, Iād rather give too much information than not enough. I use Procreate on an iPad for everything and have next to no patience for messing with brush settings, so most of my stuff is just preloaded š Iāll show them all though!
Everything should be from procreateās Classic Library instead of the Procreate Library, which sounds confusing if you havenāt used it before. You just gotta pinch out (like youāre zooming out) of the brush selection and it should show you both libraries.
For most of my flat 2D drawings, itās me and the script, airbrush, and gloaming brushes against the world. I might do a sketch with the Round Brush (which Iāve adjusted to taper at the ends a little) or one of the pencil brushes, but I never spend a whole lot of time on those. Iāll do any line work with the Script brush, which I really like because it doesnāt auto stabilize or whatever and make my lines all weird. I like that the taper isnāt too sensitive tooāit lets me make both thin and thick lines without adjusting my size all the time. Thatās how I fill my base colors as well, I just outline with Script and bucket fill lol.
Any textured lines in my drawings are most likely done with the Gloaming brush, which looks kind of like using the long edge of a pencil to meā¦? Or maybe watercolor paper or something, it just tickles the brain nicely. Then Iāll occasionally use the Thylacine or Inka brushes for messy looking inky lines, but thatās not super often.
For more painterly things I kinda donāt have a set processā¦? Like Iāll just pick a brush and go to town, usually on one layer unless Iām using some adjustments or adding in several elements. Sometimes I like to use the Spectra brush (which I also have a tapered version of) because I enjoy the texture it has, but itās a little tricky to useā¦lately Iāve just been using the Flat Brush all the way to encourage myself to be less detailed in the beginning, which is a BIG problem with me! Then Iāll go behind and blend some edges with the Hard Blend brush if I need to.
I enjoy adding a little bit of texture if my art is looking plain. One particular example I used a ton in my Inktober stuff is swiping the Tarraleah brush on a lower opacity multiply layer over the entire drawing, which imo made things feel slightly more organic. Using Smoke, Flicks, Driven Snow, or any of the other fun textured brushes is cool too, especially when I donāt feel like painstakingly adding pesky details in the background. Iām lazy and tired yāall, Iām not gonna sit there and render smoke if I have a brush that can do most of it for me š
The only brush that Iāve made on my own (at least I think???? I canāt remember tbh) is called Scatter, which is just a more evenly spaced version of Flicks. Itās tapered too and I use it to makeā¦uhā¦trailing sparkles, I guess? It just saves me from having to stab my screen a bunch of times to make little dots everywhere!
I think thatās itā¦I try to dabble with other brushes sometimes tooāthe brushes in the new library look cool, and I keep meaning to try them outābut Iām honestly a creature of habit and keep going back to my favorites, lol. I tried to make a little sample sheet of some brushes (+ what category theyāre stored under) and point out what I used in a few of my works, so I hope that helps at least a little bit.
