When it comes time to shop for wedding dresses, Vinnie is almost immediately told that he’s not allowed to come with under any circumstances and that he’s just going to have to wait and be surprised on the big day. He pouts about it for about half an hour before countering with a “fine but you have to take Ty with so he can vote on the dresses for me”. Liv doesn’t bother trying to point out that what he wants to see her in and what Ty wants to see her in will be two very different styles. It’s easier to just let him think he’s won this round.
Once they actually go shopping - Liv, Ty, their mom, Vinnie’s mom, and Nana Dellamonica - it’s a whole ordeal. Her dad has politely declined an invitation to come along, says he doesn’t know what it’s gonna cost and that he’ll be as surprised as everyone else on the big day. Ty is not exactly happy to be there, clearly out of place in the middle of the little boutique filled with a sea of white lace and tulle. But for the most part he sucks it up. There’s bickering - no surprise - and he protests loudly when she comes out in a slinky mermaid gown - also, no surprise.
They’ve been there for about an hour and a half when she comes out in a dress that leaves them all gasping. And they know it’s the one when she looks over and sees her big brother with his jaw clenched tight as can be as he does his best not to get emotional. They all have a little laugh as Nana passes him her packet of tissues and he grumbles about having to come along in the first place. But Olivia immediately tells the sales woman that this is the dress and once she’s back in her normal clothes Ty’s pulling into that old bear hug she’s known all her life, mumbling about how Vinnie doesn’t know how lucky he is.

summary: pat’s little sister is home from college for the summer and might have a little something going on with one of his teammates that no one else knows about just yet.
a/n: this is tiny and dumb but i wanted to try and write something so here we are. hopefully somebody likes it. there’s also like a lot of backstory to this but this is just a little snippet.
“Uh, Murray? What’s your sister doing here?”
Pat hadn’t really looked over at the bleachers since the game had started, more focused on trying to get a few decent hits. But he couldn’t help looking over at Vinnie’s question, just as confused as the other outfielder. Sure enough, Becca was sitting over on the bleachers next to Olivia, the two girls talking about something that he was positive wasn’t baseball. He could count on one hand the number of games Becca had come to since she’d turned fifteen and convinced their dad that she had no interest in sitting through a million baseball games and had better things to do with her time. But now, after being home from NYU for two days, she’d decided to come to a game and he had no idea why.
Apparently, he’d been distracted by his own confusion and taking too long to give Vinnie an answer because his teammate turned away from him and shouted, “Bec! What are you doing here?!”
His shout had gotten the attention of several people other than just the girl in the bleachers. Of course, the girls looked his way. Olivia was laughing at his little shout with a shake of her head but Becca simply flipped him the bird before turning back to her conversation. Well, first she glanced behind for a moment that had her expression softening before giving her full attention back to the girl next to her. Both Vinnie and Pat glanced behind them to see what she’d been looking at.
Zapata was leaning against the side of the dugout, watching the same girl with a small smile of his own. That added to Pat’s confusion but Vinnie seemed to connect the dots faster than his friend, a wide smirk they were all too familiar with appearing. He didn’t say anything at first, just let out a laugh at what he’d figured out as he made his way past his teammates. “Oh that’s just too good. I’d be careful Zap. Ty was pretty scary when he found out about me and Liv and he’s like a baby kitten compared to our loveable nutjob over there.”
Zapata turned to look at Vinnie, smile vanishing in a heartbeat before he glanced back over at Pat. He managed get about a ten second head start running across the field before Murray pieced it together and chased after him. It was more than enough to grab everyone’s attention, even the girls in the bleachers. All Becca could do was bury her face in her hands as her big brother chased after the guy she was hoping would be her boyfriend. Now, she wasn’t so sure how that’d go.

It’s the third week of kindergarten when Vinnie goes over to Ty’s house for the first time. The two boys have become thick as thieves since the third day of school when they had a very serious discussion about which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle was the best during lunch. After a lot of begging and pouting from both boys to their moms, a play date after school is arranged and it’s decided that he’d go to the Dellamonicas after school that Thursday. Mrs. Dellamonica meets them at the bus stop, letting them both talk excitedly about their day as they walk four houses down to where Ty lives. They barely get through the front door when a little girl practically tackles Ty to the ground. Vinnie doesn’t know what to think about this but Mrs. D just laughs so he figures it can’t be too bad.
Olivia Dellamonica is four and wearing a t-shirt with the Little Mermaid on it when he meets her for the first time. Her dark curls are wild and there’s some glitter glue on the ends on the left side. She smiles up at Ty who tries to push her away only for her to hold onto him tighter. She stops smiling when she sees Vinnie. At age six, he doesn’t totally understand what glaring is but that’s essentially what she’s doing until her mom explains who he is. Then it turns to a pout as she whines that Ty’s supposed to play with her when he comes home, not play with his school friends that he’s already been with all day. Mrs. D picks her up as a tantrum starts to stir up and sends the boys outside to play until it’s time for dinner. When they come in for mac n cheese she’s made the kids later, Olivia is still pouting. He’s pretty sure he’d rather have Ty come play at his house but Mrs. D makes really good mac n cheese so he doesn’t think about it too long.
By the time him and Ty are in the fourth grade, he’s warmed up to Olivia. Sure, she still glares at him like half the time and he’s lost count of the number of times she’s yelled at him or thrown something at his face. At first it was kind of scary. Now it’s just kind of funny to see what makes her go crazy and shout for her mom. Especially since Mrs. D never actually yells at him or Ty when Olivia’s upset. At the most, they all get separated and are all told to knock it off or no dessert. It works every time. That being said, he’s definitely not okay with other kids making her upset. It’s one thing when she’s yelling and chasing him because he hid a frog in her bedroom. It’s another thing when some boy on the playground starts picking on her and her friends. He and Ty have spent more than a couple recesses in the principals office because something that started on the playground.
The summer before seventh grade is the last time him and Ty get to really come to one of Olivia’s birthday parties. There’s still a family dinner every year that him and his mom go to because their moms are best friends and he has to behave when they’re at a nice restaurant but he gets banned from the friends party after her tenth. Something about how it was mean for him to throw her into the pool (even though she laughed when he’d done the same thing to Ty) and how her and her friends didn’t want to hang out with stupid middle school boys anymore. He tries to brush it off because they are growing up and he’s not supposed to be hanging out with little kids anymore but he’s still a little frustrated. Not that he’d ever tell her that. No, that just means when her birthday rolls around the next year him and Ty hide all of her birthday presents in weird places around the house for her to have to track down.
Eighth grade is a couple different firsts for him. First time at a boy-girl party with no parents. First time kissing a girl on the lips. First time getting drunk on warm beer. Him and Ty aren’t supposed to go because Mrs. D isn’t okay with there not being parents there but they lie and say that Ty’s going to sleep over at Vinnie’s house for once. Only an idiot would miss out on a party like this. And neither of them thinks about getting in trouble until it’s 12:30 and they get picked up by Mr. Dellamonica after Vinnie’s mom informed them the boys weren’t with her. He’s never heard Ty’s dad yell over anything before and it’s kind of scary and when he wakes up the next morning with a raging headache he’s informed that he’s grounded for a month. Which means a month of no Ty except for at school. It’s the longest month of his life.
High school starts and both boys hit growth spurts during their freshman year. Everyone expected Ty to be tall but nobody expected him to go from 5′5″ to almost six foot before his fifteenth birthday. Vinnie’s growth spurt isn’t as noticeable but it’s enough to keep up with Ty. And the boys start filling out, going through all the “changes” they’d ignored during health class the year before. And he’s noticing girls more and realizing that the idea of spending a Saturday night hanging out with a pretty girl is a lot appealing than it used to be. And it doesn’t hurt that he makes it onto the JV baseball team as a freshman.
He’s fifteen when he realizes that he’s not the only one growing up. Olivia’s thirteen and going through puberty and she’s not the flat chested annoying little girl that used to bug him and Ty every afternoon. She hasn’t gotten much taller - which is great to tease her about - but she’s...developing and he’s not sure how to feel about it. He’s definitely not sure how to feel about one of their teammates commenting about her being cute when she comes to their game in one of her dresses that looks a lot smaller than it had last summer.
By the time Olivia’s starting high school, Vinnie and Ty have come to some kind of agreement that she’s not going to be dating while they’re around. They’ve heard how guys talk about girls in the locker room or in the cafeteria. It doesn’t matter if ninety percent of it is made up. They aren’t giving anyone a chance. Most guys know to just stay away. Ty’s temper has earned him a reputation over the last couple of years and everyone knows that if you mess with Ty, you’re messing with Vinnie too. But the few who try to cozy up to Olivia are quickly escorted away under threat of bodily harm. She lets them both know countless times that she hates them and thinks they’re being stupid. Vinnie’s okay with that if it means she doesn’t become the gossip of the boy’s locker room.
By the time he’s finishing up his junior year, he’s had some kind of revelation that Olivia Dellamonica isn’t just the annoying little girl he used to put up with anymore. As much as he knows Ty would kill him if he ever found out, he knows that he’s pretty much somewhere on the way to falling for the girl and he has no idea what to do about it. He can’t just ask her out, not it he values his life. And she’s still mad at him for all the times he kept guys from asking her out.
It happens at spring formal. He’d been dating a girl from the softball team - Lindsey B or something like that - and it had fizzled out a couple weeks before the dance. Somehow, Olivia managed to get a date to the event before him or Ty could stop it and he tries not to think about how much he would love to wipe that smug smirk off her stupid date’s face if he could. But she’s smiling and looks amazing in her dress. And when her stupid date winds up hanging out with his friends for a little too long, Vinnie doesn’t hesitate to swoop in and steal her for as many dances as he can. And for once, they’re within five feet of each other without some kind of fight breaking out. He spins her around the dance floor for every song until they’re both breathless and desperate to sit down. And that’s when he knows he’s completely gone for her. He just has to figure out when he can do something about it without losing his best friend and his dream girl.
