//2019 is the year of Delpad! Here on this blog you can send in questions for Della and Launchpad and they will answer in the form of comics like this one. New comics posted every Wednesday.
I know I should be making the last four art requests I promised, but I havenât been feeling good lately. So hereâs some silly sketches and doodles I made to cheer myself up.
The reason why I love the LaunchDad headcanon so much is that it explains the characters' actions in ways that fit their MO without making anyone ill-intentioned.
Launchpad was hired by Scrooge after Della disappeared. He doesn't know Donald nor would he know who & where the boys would have went after Della vanished.
But he does encourage Scrooge to go on adventures again, in their very first discussion in the limo! Once the boys return, he's seen eavesdropping on a conversation about the boys with Scrooge & Mrs, Beakley - immediately jumping in when Scrooge says that he would need a pilot. He may not know the boys personally, but he seems eager to join in on an adventure with them, no questions asked. Even if they are, in Launchpad's words, "random kids I just met"!
And if the boys were made the old-fashioned way, then LP would not necessarily know that the boys existed. He has a lot of exes as it is. The most he would have known about Della is through the newspaper - which we know he reads. Plus, it seems to be a reoccurring gag that Launchpad's exes end up in danger and he rushes in to help them.
I also can't help but wonder if the dropped storyline about Launchpad working for Bradford & FOWL fits into all this. It was dropped very early on, but I do wonder if 'Suavepad' could have been more of an alternate identity. Everytime Launchpad goes off to rescue his exes, he seems to adopt the serious 'hero' persona that feels more in line with Suavepad. Double identity? FOWL does have a habit of brainwashing.
And if the whole point of his arc is about how he becomes a proper hero - then the original arc may have been about him being a villain to becoming a hero, fighting against the very organization that originally hired him in the Season 3 finale (while dressed as Gizmoduck).
As for Della? Well, he would have just been a fling to her. Why would she bother to remember? She brags about 'breaking hearts' in her VO sides. I doubt she would have thought about him - especially if he was using a different name & identity at the time.
Obviously, I adore the "Launchpad as the father of Huey, Dewey, and Louie" headcanon. No, I don't think it's canon as I doubt Disney would ever want to confirm the identity of Mr. Duck and it's more fun for fandom if things are left eternally vague for the sake of fan theories.
But I can't help but think that Launchpad would be the most satisfying out of all the options (in DT17 verse, to be specific).
I was ruminating in my head as to why other options wouldn't be as satisfying, even if they may be more popular headcanons.
One fan theory is that Della used IVF which - I'm sorry - but I hate this theory. IVF is costly time-consuming and expensive. You think Della Duck, reckless adventurer, would be responsible enough to do IVF in her 20's? You'd have to ignore her entire character for this to be possible.

Another is that it was Selene, using magic, but again...not satisfying. You'd think Selene would have a stronger reaction to meeting Dewey - and would be curious as to where his brothers are. Instead it's more "Oh, hey, you're Della's kid!" which is underwhelming if she's been close enough to Della to bless her with children. (She also seems rather unconcerned with Della's disappearance, which is hilarious in hindsight, but it is on par with how Gods would interact with mortals, I suppose).
Storkules seems to know the boys by the names that Donald gave them, which suggests that he must have visited the boys after Della's disappearance. He also has a much stronger reaction to seeing the boys again than Selene does. It would be more narratively satisfying if he were the dad, compared to Selene.
But we also know that Storkules & Selene were originally supposed to be one-shot episode characters, so I don't think either should be that important to the show's narrative.

Another suggestion that I've seen is that Gyro invented/cloned Huey, Dewey, and Louie with Donald's genetics. This would parallel pretty well with the bizarre Webby, May, and June storyline and it would make Donald the de-facto dad and Della would have 'adopted' them in the same way that Mrs. Beakley adopted Webby. Gyro is the 'kid inventor,' after all.
I do think Season 1 Gyro seems to have grief over something - and I think him being depressed over Della stealing his ship & vanishing with one of his inventions would make sense. He also has an overarching storyline about learning how to be a good dad which mirrors Della's! You could even argue that Della complains about Gyro in Season 3 in a way that mirrors how someone would complain about their ex. Ergo, making Gyro and Della the romantic couple but with Donald still being the dad.
It's really not a bad theory and there is a lot of merit to it! Outside of the LaunchDad headcanon, this may be my favorite!
But again, I run into the issue of why isn't Gyro closer to the boys? Truthfully, there's no reason why he couldn't have helped Donald, especially since this theory requires him to know of Donald's existence. And if he helped create them (by hand, I suppose), you'd think he'd immediately want to connect with all three, once he heard that the boys have arrived at the mansion. His introduction episode has him meeting Louie, solely because Louie can help him make some extra money. Again, there seems to be no greater desire to ask about his brothers and to seek their attention.
Thinking back on the DuckTales (2017) Lorcana cards that have been released, it is kinda weird that thereâs Inspector Tezuka & Poe cards but thereâs no cards for reoccurring characters like Mâma Cabrera, Gandra Dee, and Doofus.
Itâs not like itâs a huge deal or anything but the choices seem ratherâŠrandom? I wonder what the decision process is on what is printed and what isnât.

I tried to keep my support for this ship under wraps until I posted this, but the amount of supporters suddenly exploded in popularity over here and I couldnât take it anymore. xD
I really like how the gradient came out, though I do wish the color transition between them came out smoother. đ I did try to fix that up digitally. This is my first time drawing Della and my second time drawing LP. I should really make some reference sheets for them because now I want to draw them even more. x3

Heh, you know whatâs funny about this? (Aside from the idea of Launchpad being a father) The first time I saw this ship being suggested in the fandom, I was completely not on board. đ Â Around the time that âWoo-oo!â premiered, I remember seeing a post on Tumblr where someone was theorizing Delpad being a thing. I rejected it immediately. I thought it would ruin the older brother relationship LP has with the kids. I was all like âJust because theyâre pilots, doesnât mean theyâre a couple. Just because Dellaâs wearing something similar to what LP wore in the old show, doesnât automatically mean theyâre implying something.â I still believed the two had some sort of connection, that maybe they were just friends or maybe he was a friend of the fatherâs. (I was jokingly theorizing Howard the Duck could be the father at the time. xD )
Then Dellaâs outfit changed. I was like âOkâŠwhy are their colors matching?â Then LP suddenly turned into this heroic character on a mission in âHouse of the Lucky Gander!â. And I was like âUmâŠwhat was that?!â Then the Della comics came out. âOh no, this could really workâŠSTOP SHIPPING THIS! ITâS RIDICULOUS! DONâT CATCH THE FEELS!â LP already considers Dewey as his best friend? The both love aerospace? Mummies and Daddies?! âOK IâM SOLD!â xD
I recently finalized a much more detail reasoning over how I think Delpad could work. Iâm being iffy about whether I want to post it here or make a side-blog to discuss it over there.
Ha, Iâm so surprised by how many of us have been having similar thoughts on this shipâŠoh manâŠI canât wait to see where this speculation goes nextâŠxD
So I came up with a superhero AU for Della and Launchpad. Meet The Flying Ace and The Aviator! They patrol the streets of Duckburg and keep its citizens safe!
