the thought i keep coming back to with the finale, and this season in general, is a sense of… infestation, i guess is the best way to describe it. because for the first two seasons, iwtv was a work that— even with all its gothic/horror themes— seemed deeply compassionate at its core, and it remained devoted to beauty and love in a way that felt like a reprieve from (even a small rebellion against) the rising fascism of the culture surrounding it. and now it feels like the hatefulness it was pushing back against has infested it somehow, like a swarm of fuckin termites, which has not only ruined this season but also calls into question the structural soundness of what came before it. like, how did we even get here? was this sort of mean-spirited derision always just lying in wait? idk. i don’t want to make a bad season of tv deeper than it is, but it does feel like witnessing another loss in the cultural battle when a careful, compassionate work that ostensibly cared about the marginalised experiences it depicted becomes just another conduit for hatred toward vulnerable groups. what a fucking bummer, man

#100% my thoughts like it’s upsetting #and it’s genuinely infuriating to see ppl act like this is normal for the genre #gothic media being dark doesn’t explain the mean spiritedness in the literal writing #the genre using monsters to explore concepts surrounding abuse and terrible ways people can treat each other doesn’t explain way things #like the writers now fully defending their work saying actually these victims deserved the abuse #what’s gothic about taking the violence and abuse that happens to a variety of characters in the source material #and specifically adapting it so that it only happens to the main characters they specifically chose to adapt as black JUST #to insist that these characters actually really deserved it #what are we supposed to get from this #why has this approach to the story taken presentment sober the actual adaptation of the story they insisted was being adapted #in what world is it normal for showrunners and writers to openly say they didn’t like that ppl empathized with their mc #and decided to write him into a story his character isn’t originally part of JUST to torture him to ‘humble’ him #why should we ignore this shift coming in combination with them getting rid of specifically black writers #why are we supposed to just move on from them destroying the literal structure of the story they told JUST because they were mad #that ppl were enjoying the nonwhite characters and engaged in their nuance #like is it not ridiculous to hear them admit they know they’ve screwed themselves up writing wise #but they were literally just SO determined to try to destroy the perception of their nonwhite (and especially black) characters #that they didn’t CARE that they were screwing themselves ofer #*over #it shouldn’t bother me so bad it’s just a show but seeing this play out in this current climate in the world #it just fucking sucks
