It’s annoying to me, who tries to be accurate in all things Rothko, to be tripped up by a reputable source, in this case a published book. In this case we have a painting that was listen wrong and upside down. I took it at face value for a long time, but I have a list of Rothkos I believe to be upside down or flipped and this was on it. Low and behold, the date I took for correct was actually for another painting (The black and the white). I was never that suspicious of duplicate titles because we’ve seen that before, but this was particularly confusing because, apparently whoever put the book together saw this very black and white looking scan and assumed it was that painting. I’m sorry! But I expect to catch more of these now and again.
Here’s the real orientation and title!
