I’m a writer and artist mostly on Tumblr for fandom reasons. You might think: you should probably side blog! And I do, but in a way that isn’t particularly useful. You can find my art-focused account at @demadraws, writing at @demawrites and a random aesthetic thing at @demaesthetic but otherwise all of the fandom stuff is right here, jumbled together with cats and memes and PSAs.

As we look forward to another year, there’s no better time to celebrate our wonderful community of creators. This year, we’re shining a spotlight on our alumni: the talented writers and artists who successfully completed the Dragon Age Big Bang in previous years. All past DABB alumni were given the option of an interactive interview with our mod Alix, or an informal written survey. If you’re thinking about participating this year, check out the insights and advice from those who tread this path before!
On passing the cheese
Alix and Dema talk passed torches, stats, and the joy of matching
Alix: So … I probably don’t need to give you the usual pre-interview spiel.
Dema: I dunno, have you added your special touch to it? I can ooh and aah.
*plays the graduation march in the background*
Alix: It’s so funny to me that a year ago we were on opposite sides of this and you were interviewing me! I definitely wasn’t imagining our roles would reverse.
How are you feeling now that you’re free of the cheese hat?
Dema: Well it definitely smells different. I feel lighter! Thank you for taking up the torch!
Alix: Genuinely so happy to. It’s still a little surreal but it’s fun.
Dema: I knew at the end of the last bang that I would not be able to continue as a cheese because I was applying for jobs (and I got one!). Cheesedom is very satisfying and rewarding but it is also a lot of time, so it is lovely to have someone like you step in.
Alix: Normally I ask a question about why you signed up for the Bang the first time but that question feels a bit weird talking to someone who founded the event!
Dema: I mean! I still have an answer!
Alix: Okay, excellent! Lay it on me!
Dema: First of all, I just really love this fandom, and I really love this event. The team worked so hard to develop really solid, fair systems for it, and I hope to participate for as long as it runs.
Second, I have so much fun meeting other creators and being matched anonymously, it's a fantastic way to get to know the amazing writers and artists in our community.
Alix: Are you planning to participate this year?
Dema: I am, if time allows! I will have a better grasp once matching rolls around.
Alix: I’m so excited for things to actually get started.
Dema: Maybe someday I'll even write something for it (LOL probably not, y'all are much stronger than I.)
Alix: Pfffft!
Dema: But yes, the excitement is real, and it's so gratifying to see how much the hype has returned this year. I had wondered about that, since last year we had the huge boost of Veilguard having just come out.
Alix: What are you most looking forward to this year?
Dema: Since this is my first year with zero inside information, I am really looking forward to that Christmas-morning feeling we get when the matches are posted and we get started with our teams. For context, I really tried to not break anonymity when I was choosing pitches for the last bangs, but obviously I did end up knowing ahead of time who it would be. This time I really will have no idea before anyone else!
Alix: Oh that is SUCH a good feeling. I remember being soooo excited last year.
Dema: I'm also planning to read/finish last year's fics on the way in, to get into the spirit.
Alix: I’m STILL working my way through last year’s fics.
Dema: It's quite a trove.
Alix: It’s honestly astonishing how much the community created in terms of writing and fics
Dema: When Mer put together the statistics for last year we were all flabbergasted.
I am so curious how many people will sign up this year...but I shan't ask.
Alix: I think we’re on the cusp of 100 writers right now! (That’s not a secret.)
Dema: WOW! That is amazing, I cannot wait to see how it all shakes out! Good luck, writers!!
Alix: So the thing I do ask everyone: what advice do you have for people on the fence about whether or not to participate? Especially for artists?
Dema: Ooooh that's a good question! I think my best advice for artists is to really let the check-ins give structure to your process. It sucks to be down to the wire cranking something out, but the timeline for the DABB is honestly pretty luxurious as an artist. It gives you time to refine an idea, and string-wall with your writer if you feel called to do so, and sketch with no pressure before diving in. So: take the whole time! The more of the timeline you use, the more fun you have.

when there's a performance of the bacchae and dionysus isn't the hottest sexiest person on that stage and also he has no insane levels of sexual tension with his cousin it makes me upset. Also he needs to really feel like he's absolutely in charge of everything. Not raise his voice without needing to, not act crazy or over the top. Pentheus can act crazy and over the top and shout all the time.
on a similar note there's an objectively not very good greek performance of the bacchae which is nonetheless amongst my favourites, primarily for the choices of the director like having Tiresias and Cadmus wear huge cow bells in front of their penises. And at some point they start banging their bell-penises together.
