it takes everything in her not to roll her eyes at his response — he thinks he’s so CLEVER, doesn’t he? — but a warmer, brighter smile does manage to fight its way to the surface. it’s hard not to smile when he’s around; ed carries with him a certain kind of light, subdued but pervasive, that has a way of seeping into the most RELUCTANT of hosts. no shadow stands a chance next to him, no matter what may lurk within in. “i’m not sure,” lorraine sighs, returning from her thoughts. unfortunately for her, the files before her — detailed statements from the lockwood family regarding the dated disappearance of their eldest son, joshua — offer no answers, either. “something keeps calling me back but i don’t know what.”

THE ENTIRE ROOM BRIGHTENS right along with his wife’s features, and it eases the knot in ed’s chest that he hadn’t quite been conscious of. he knows better than anyone that their line of WORK can be particularly difficult on lorraine, and ALTHOUGH it’s one they both engage with willingly, he still can’t help but worry on occasion. ❛ let me take a look, ❜ he offers, reaching across the table to -- only at her affirmative -- PULL the files towards his end to get a BETTER look at the printed word there. it’s nothing ed hasn’t read before, of course, he’s more than familiar with this case. but if lorraine is feeling SOMETHING attached to this, clearly there has to be something they’re overlooking.

WICKEDNESS WAITS FOR NO MAN. if there is anyone who knows that, it’s ed, but his doting is expected; she’s been distracted lately, too far away to be reached, but that happens from time to time. lorraine had hoped he wouldn’t notice but it’s him, of course he would notice — he notices everything. the smile she offers him is wry but not cold, tight but appreciative. “you know my answer to that,” she responds patiently, looking up from the files she’s been reviewing. “—i’m fine.”

HIS IMMEDIATE INSTINCT IS TO PROTEST, but it’s stifled, swallowed before being allowed to rise any further than that. anxious as he may be, lorraine’s decisions are her own, and the last thing ed wishes to do is to CONTROL her. not that she would ever allow him to, of course. instead, he settles across from her, warmth seeping into his expression as he watches her, even through his prior feelings on the situation. ❛ well, if i know yours, i imagine you ought to know mine. ❜ his tone is LIGHT, wryly humorous -- even as he sobers a touch just a moment later, his gaze finally shifting to the papers between them. ❛ ------ what are you looking for ? ❜
