The Talud Continental IV expedition, supported by CONICET (Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council), is currently exploring the Mar del Plata submarine canyon, located more than 300 kilometers off the coast in the southwestern Atlantic. Conducted aboard the research vessel R/V Falkor Too from the Schmidt Ocean Institute, this historic mission can be followed live on YouTube. The canyon plunges beyond 3,500 meters and is situated at a biogeographic boundary between the warm Brazil Current and the cold Malvinas Current—an area renowned for its exceptionally rich and understudied biodiversity.
Beginning on July 23, 2025, and continuing until August 11, the expedition marks a technological leap for Argentine deep‑sea exploration. For the first time in this region, the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian is being deployed, capable of reaching 4,500 meters to collect high‑resolution images and samples without harming the ecosystem. The mission aims to catalogue new species, study deep‑sea reproduction and biogeography, assess plastic pollution and buried carbon stores, and generate 3D models and open‑access resources for education, science, and public engagement.
