I get that the bookshop fire was traumatic for Crowley because he thought he lost Aziraphale.
I keep seeing people say they want Aziraphale to know what it would feel like to lose Crowley, but I'm pretty sure my eyes weren't the only ones open when this happened...
Right?
"And that was the last I was to see of Crowley for some time."
Aziraphale has lost Crowley. To Hell.
He could do nothing to stop what happened in Edinburgh, and I can't imagine that he didn't fear he'd lost Crowley for good here.
Aziraphale has experienced more heartbreak than some fans care to even acknowledge. He exists in constant fear of losing Crowley to Hell again. AGAIN.
We saw Aziraphale save Crowley from Hell in 1941 with the human magic trick he used on Furfur.
Aziraphale was the one sitting in the bathtub of holy water after the Notpocalypse, knowing this was the reason he'd been so scared to hand Crowley his own thermos of holy water in the first place.
He's lost Crowley to Hell before and he will do anything to prevent it from happening again.
That's the impact Edinburgh had on Aziraphale. This is the impact that losing Crowley had on Aziraphale.
And it was an angelic intelligence which, while not being particularly higher than human intelligence, is much broader and has the advantage of having thousands of years of practice.
You know what Aziraphale is doing here?
Getting into a role.
Do you know when he got the idea?
Yes.
Did you notice what he does when gets through to the publican who can't help but humour him and tells him all he remembers?
He drops the act.
He's not mean about it, he just stops playing a giddy silly numpty.
So please, stop making him into a stupid numpty.
I know we didn't get the scene where he gets rid of the Soho gangsters who want to 'persuade' him to sell the bookshop; but we did get an angel dealing with two thugs in a misty cemetery while he was dressed like he walked out of a detective cosplay.
Was he a silly numpty then?
And I am NOT saying Aziraphale is not silly. He is absolutely silly. He delights in being silly. He drives Crowley bonkers with how silly he can be if he wants to. And he wants to. And Crowley loves it.
Crowley might grumble and complain and sigh and pretend he's way too cool for this shit but he would never dream of wanting Aziraphale to be otherwise... he would never-ever want Aziraphale to change or lose his adorable silly sparkle.
Crowley loves nothing more than the fact that Aziraphale feels free to be silly with him and around him. That he's being himself. He'd never want to change that.
And you know what, Crowley used to be more silly too.
But millenia of working for Hell seems to have dampened his spirits. And no wonder.
Even though Aziraphale eventually agreed to do some of his jobs for him. Despite the risks that they might be discovered and their fraternisation punished severely. Aziraphale tried. They stayed as close as they could have.
Traded jobs, came up with schmes.
Aziraphale build a very specific building with very specific aim in mind, calling it A.Z. Fell and Co.
How, did he explain the Co to Heaven? Who knows. But it worked.
Hell could not get Crowley (or his mind or his TV or his car) when he was in his angel's bookshop.
What would have happened to Crowley if he didn't have Aziraphale all these years?
And knowing Aziraphale, he thinks he didn't do enough. He probably blames himself for not trying harder. For not doing something differently. For not saving Crowley.
When people say Aziraphale wants the 'old' Crowley back, they are kind of right. But he doesn't want the oblivious angel!Crowley who barely acknowledged him; he simply wants the Crowley who knows him, always saw him, appreciated him and slowly came to trust him after being broken by the one being who was meant to love and understand him. He wants Crowley as he is, but free. That's what Aziraphale wants.
Aziraphale wants Crowley free from constant fear he will be dragged into the disgusting smelly damp downstairs full of screams and despair with no way out.
And we do get glimpses of the old Crowley in the present and you know when that is?
When he's distracted, when he gets to be playful, when he has a goal, when he focuses on a concrete problem, something that he and Aziraphale are doing together.
And Aziraphale knows all this. He notices. Because he loves him.
In addition to the second one, angels are GIVEN their halos rather than earning them. Demons like Lucifer rebelled for freedom and individuality, thus demon horns all look different compared to an angelâs boring halo.
Horns are useful tools, but if you join them into a circle they become useless badges of authority.
And the thing about wearing a badge is that you become a symbol of someone else. Youâre not you, youâre an extension of the entity whose authority youâre borrowing. You canât be yourself until you ditch it
Hereâs a visual representation of angels and demons.
I figure that as angels, their âhornsâ would glow when connected to become traditional halos. However, this blinds the angel with heavenly light, making the angel rely on Godâs guidance.
Angels who break their halos become demons, and willingly grow their horns in obscure shapes so it wonât connect back into a halo. Because the halo no longer blinds them, demons can finally see but can no longer communicate with God for guidance â the light they once gave to heaven now belongs to them, hence demons being proficient with fire allowing them to see in the dark.
Extra notes on horns & halos:
Circular horns (Halos) are smooth and easy for God to âgrabâ like a chain.
Jagged horns are sharp to the touch and can pierce God.
The only way angels can break their own halos is through strong, direct, hard force; rebellious angels willingly fell from heaven, breaking their halos upon hitting our worldâs surface. Thatâs why demons are called âfallen angelsâ.
The only thing that can hurt God and other angels is another angel, so the shattered remains of a demonâs old halo would be reformed into tridents and pitchforks commonly associated with the devil.
Regretful demons wishing to commune with God again would either try to grow their horns back into a halo, or clasp their hands in prayer to form a circle with their own body mimicking a halo. It would faintly work. These demons would become the first priests, and spread the practice to humans.Â
âI remember reading somewhere that Noahâs grandchildren met other kids (their future wives and husbands) somewhere down the line. Which would be a plot hole because civilization restarted with Noah, according to the books.
