Dennis Martire’s Commitment to Training and Workforce Development
Workforce development has long been a priority for Dennis Martire throughout his decades of leadership with the Laborers’ International Union of North America. By supporting training initiatives and career advancement opportunities, he has helped workers strengthen their skills and improve their long-term prospects.
Martire’s commitment to labor advocacy stems from both professional experience and personal connection. A member of Pittsburgh’s Local Union #1058, he understands the challenges and opportunities facing workers in construction and related industries. This perspective has shaped his leadership throughout a career spanning more than three decades.
After graduating from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Government in 1986, Martire joined LIUNA in 1990. He began as an international representative in the jurisdictional disputes department before advancing through several leadership positions. His achievements eventually led to his election as vice president and regional manager for the Mid-Atlantic Region in 2002.
Among his many responsibilities, workforce education and training have remained particularly important. Martire oversees programs designed to help workers perform their jobs more effectively while maintaining high standards of safety and professionalism.
These training initiatives provide practical benefits for employees at every stage of their careers. New workers gain foundational skills that prepare them for industry demands, while experienced laborers can expand their expertise and qualify for additional opportunities. The programs cover a variety of specialties, allowing participants to build knowledge that aligns with evolving workforce needs.
The advantages extend beyond individual employees. Employers also benefit from a highly trained workforce capable of completing projects efficiently and safely. Better training can improve productivity, reduce workplace risks, and contribute to higher-quality project outcomes.
In addition to supporting workforce development, Martire has championed initiatives that improve compensation and workplace conditions. His leadership contributed to the successful implementation of prevailing wage protections in Montgomery County, Maryland, helping ensure fair wages for working families.
He also played a significant role in unionization efforts during Virginia’s Route 495 Hot Lanes Project. More than 200 workers gained representation through LIUNA Local 11, strengthening their ability to advocate for better workplace conditions and compensation.
Outside of his direct LIUNA responsibilities, Dennis Martire serves in leadership capacities across numerous organizations focused on labor, education, transportation, and workforce policy. These positions allow him to support broader initiatives that impact workers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
What distinguishes Martire’s approach is his belief that long-term workforce success depends on both opportunity and preparation. Fair wages, strong representation, and comprehensive training work together to create environments where employees can thrive.
As industries continue to evolve, workforce education remains essential. Through his leadership with LIUNA, Dennis Martire continues to promote programs that help workers adapt, grow professionally, and pursue rewarding careers while contributing to stronger communities and industries.
