#1. OFF-WHITE x Jordan II. The 2 is a favorite of mine and one of the first Jordans I ever bought. When it first launched in ‘86, It stood out: minimal branding, luxuriously made in Italy, and a big departure from the AJ1. What made Virgil’s version particularly special was that for the first time in Nike’s history a sneaker was reverse engineered from an original pair in the DNA Archive using three-dimensional scans of an exact pair MJ laced up. 🤯 I’ll forever remember this as *the pair* of 2021 and a bookend on the career of one of the most influential people of our time. #2. A Ma Maniére x Jordan III. No surprises here. @james.whitner and team absolutely knocked these out the park and put together one of the best iterations of the Jordan III ever. Timeless and elegant, AMM stripped the AJ3 down to its basics and traded traditional elephant print and rubber for premium suede and signature luxury touches like the quilted collar — all the design sensibilities of a high fashion house. What made this shoe even better was the storytelling James shared around his Mother buying his first pair of Jordan’s (they were 3s of course) and this being a lovely tribute to her with hidden inspirational messages on his journey and life throughout. https://www.instagram.com/p/CYJ-VYBOGpa/?utm_medium=tumblr

#3 Virgil’s OFF-WHITE x Nike AF1 “ICA”. This past summer I was blessed to take my family to the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and allow them to step into VA’s universe. I spent the afternoon as their personal tour guide - hyped to share everything from @jiandeleon’s rug quote and the gritty origins of Pyrex to Yeezus album artwork to Mos Def in Louis Vuitton F/W ‘21. #4. No big name collaboration, no (initial) hype, no release parties — just incredible design by NB’s own Yue We. (@flyin_asparagus). The “Refined Future” (not the “Protection Pack”; H/T @matthewjwelty on such a thorough interview with Yue) was my favorite take on the 2002R and rounds out my list as the best New Balance of the year. Inspired by older folks in Boston wearing beat up 993s (possibly my Dad when he’s not in EEEE Monarchs), and reinterpreted in such a clever and tasteful way - traditional but futuristic, clean but patinaed. #5. @maniere_usa x @jumpman23 1s. Some of Jordan’s best collaborators (Off-White, Union, and now Maniére) have mastered this concept of consistent design language. You know what it is before you even see a logo. Maniére chose a soft cracked leather upper, snakeskin details with a quilted liner and collar that’s become signature details for the brand. #6. @joefreshgoods x @newbalance 990v3 “Outside Clothes”, made in the USA. What I’ve always admired about Joe is his unique gift to tell stories and narratives through relevant, beautiful, and thoughtful design. Truly a rare talent. This pair was personally meaningful given IG’s collaboration with JFG - from ComplexCon to the shock drop last month on here. (Congrats if you got a pair!). #7. I’ve never been to Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon, but I have the next best thing: @salehebembury’s “Water Be The Guide” 2002Rs. Love the rarely selected materials - from the teal hairy suede to the green shearling. A perfect balance to the terrain-based “Peace Be The Journey” 2002Rs from Fall ‘20. #8. Back in Feb (yes, it’s hard to believe that was *this* year), MJ’s son Marcus collaborated with Jordan brand to release a fresh take on the iconic “Chicago” colorway in the @trophyroomstore x Jordan 1’s. What made this shoe special to me was the storytelling brought to life through details. The tale of a rookie Jordan being “frozen out” in the ‘85 All Star Game (being served humble pie by Isaiah Thomas and Julius Erving who refused to pass to the hot shot rookie) was beautifully executed with an icy red leather base and translucent frozen sole with the ‘85 ASG jersey’s stars on the bottom. The GOAT’s signature was icing on the cake and a detail that locked in the sports memorabilia aesthetic. Despite being “frozen out”, MJ still messed around and got a triple double. Motivation. #9. “Beef and broccoli” is an all time classic East Coast color scheme. #10. You asked for it; I’m delivering. My Top 10 sneakers of 2021, in @outfitgrid form. Kicking things off with the @jjjjound x @newbalance 990v4 Made in USA. I’ve always been a fan of mixing black with blue (despite old sartorial rules), and Justin executed this perfectly with a buttery navy suede, 3M details, and custom logo-molded toggle lace-keepers.
