Here is my final film that i have made of the fmp process, and the look book at the end, where all the photographs shown are my own. Im pretty happy with this film, the only changes i would make to have have more process shots in there, but that would have made for a very long film, so i like it how it is for now. This is being shown on the iMac at the final show.

Not quite there yet but the space is looking good, theres not a most recent photo here but tomorrow is just a job of getting the iMac in place and placing the products on the shelves. Im proud of what we have done with the space and it looks just how i imagine it to look. The branding of the company shines through how we have set the space up and the props we have put in place. Although there is always going to be more to be done, I’m happy with the final outcome to this last year of university.

Yesterday me and Nick spent the day creating shelves and a platform for the iMac to sit on for our final show. It was a long day of trail and error but in the end we managed to produce exactly what we want to. We have then painted it all black and ready to put up in the exhibition space for the final show. Although this isn't what you'd expect from graphic design students to be making, there was a lot of design work gone into creating these pieces and we are happy that the final outcome is how our designs looked.

Doing my own business cards have reminded of the end of last year when me and Nick Frazier teamed up to help out the 3rd year 3d course students. We designed them this catalogue and business cards for their 'New Designers' show in London. This was my first real client work and working to a deadline that wasn't just a uni or college project, but me and Nick handled it well and got it done well before the deadline. The students wanted each of them to have a colour, so this colour was a dot on their given page, and on their business cards to represent them. We then used this colour scheme for the front cover, making them dots also allowed for the Colchester school of art logo to be incorporated. Also with the front cover we made it a little different from the norm by cutting it to create the sleeve you can see in the pictures, this is only a small adaption to the catalogue but an effective one. Overall me and Nick are happy with the design, along with the students.

Business Cards

Today my business cards came! i purchased the 'luxe' style from moo.com and it was a good choice, the quality is great and the thickness gives it that real statement feel, the kind of card you know is in your wallet or pocket!

I went for a design that i feel shows my personality and my type of work off well, so I'm happy with them :)

Truly British Map Poster.

As part of my final piece I've decided to create this map poster, which then advertises 'The Commpn Company' with our slogan and logo down the bottom. I brought this map in London and only brought the one, meaning i only had the one shot of getting it right. As you can see from the first image, it didn't come out particularly well as it was quite faded and hard to read, however i thought of a way to over come the problem and that was to wait and hand paint it over the top, using the faded screen print as guide lines. I was unsure if this would work out how i pictured it in my head but i am happy with the result, the hand painted lettering gives a much nicer texture and look than what the screen print had, so in the end it worked out for the better!

Tag Printing.

Yesterday and the day before was spent in the print room screen printing our labels onto brown paper and printing the wooden signs for the final show. After a lot of set backs involving the typical printing process going wrong, we now have tags ready to be cut out and placed on to our items.

Wooden Spoons

As for my final major project doing 'the common company' i wanted to craft wooden spoons as part of our homeware section. Although i have not crafted these specific spoons i have painted them. I have painted these ones for display (as i would not be able to paint any further than the handle if these were to be used in the kitchen) but i have done this to give an idea of the kind of thing i wanted to achieve for the final hand-in. However with there being not enough time i thought this would be my best option on displaying what i would have created had i had the time to do so. Im happy with the look of these and the colours i chose, still being inspired by 'Cereal Magazine' using cold and monochromatic colours. The photos were then also taken on my diy photo studio that i created to photograph my 'Nature Versus The City book. I had a lot of fun doing these and looking forward to the future where these are of my own craft.

Cereal Magazine.

My main inspiration for my book is 'Cereal magazine'. I really like their photo layouts, the quality of the image and the editing they do to bring out the colours but still leave a calm mood to them. These are what I've mainly taken from them as my book is a photo book, rather than their text layouts, although if i was to do text, Cereal would inspire that too! Their use of white space makes the photo look clean and rich, and this is what i hoped mine would portray as well, and I'm happy that i believe they do.

Today i have been shooting my book, 'Nature Versus The City'. To do so i decided to do a diy photo studio in my bedroom using a lamp, and a curved piece of white card leaning on my headrest. I had my doubts if this would turn out alright but its turned out well! So here is my book, all printed and looking just how i wanted.

Personal Logo.

Ive had this logo now since last year. I use to change my ‘personal brand’ quite a lot of the time trying to figure out what i wanted it to be like, but as i haven’t changed it in a while it must mean I’m pretty happy with this one! Its a very simple logo but one that i feel says a lot about me; my inspiration, my style of work, and also my initials. Thats pretty much what you want to show within your logo and i feel this does that very well for me.

TYPE

Lately i have found myself doing a lot of typography based work, mainly being inspired by vintage style logo designs. I find this kind of work is getting quite popular lately and i am yet to find my own style of doing it but its rewarding work as I’m always happy with the outcome, even when it takes forever to get right. The first image is a book cover i designed for a road trip i went on last summer and wanted to have the images in a book format. The second is a piece I’m still working on at the moment for my final major project. The third is a book cover design for my FMP side project and the last image is a unused design for mine and Nicks clothing line ‘Adventures In Hell’.

Nature Versus The City

As a side project to my FMP i decided to create a book called 'Nature Versus The City'. The reason behind doing the book is linked with my FMP as 'The Common Company' takes inspiration from both nature and the city lifestyles, so i took this theme and made a comparison book where i look at the visual similarities. I had a lot of fun taking the images and seeing things in the forest which i could then go to the city and find in another form, such as the drain cover and tree stump for example. My main inspiration for the book layout and photo editing was 'Cereal' magazine as i love their use of white borders, mixed with full bleed images and simple text layout and design. The front cover with the black and white images laying over each other was inspired by a exhibition i came across in the Whitechapel gallery in London. The type is inspired by vintage style logos, with the texture over the top giving it that rough and hand-done feel.

I have now sent the book away to get printed by the company 'Blurb', i went for a soft cover as still being inspired by 'Cereal' magazine i went for a more magazine-like feel, i also felt a hard cover would look silly with the amount of pages i have.

The Travelers Tree

Over the weekend me and Lloren have been making money for her fundraising, where she is going to Malawi in July to help with education and sanitation. I took just a couple of days out of my week to make some crafts to sell on some art stalls around our area. This has been a great way for me to experiment with wood and the possibilities it can be made in to with minor tweaks, such as a welcome sign or candle holders. Doing the signs was a new experience for me and its definitely something i am going to keep doing, i found a very easy way to paint the type on to the wood and am more than happy with the end result. All the wood was salvaged by us, then i cleaned them up and waxed them before painting. We came up with the name ‘The Travelers Tree’ as we felt it was quite fitting to our craft theme of organic materials such as the wood and the ceramics, and travelling around to all the different art fayres to sell our work.

Casey Neistat

As you would have seen from a previous post i have recently found a new love for videography. I found that i liked to make videos a bit before discovering Casey Neistat, but it wasn't till i did discover him that i can do so much more than just make simple videos of everyday life. As you can see from the photos above its not all about the moving image with his videos but the design content that he puts in to explain things within them. His way of doing the type is very hand done, where he will use stop motion and also continuous filming to create these scenes. You can also tell he has done them in one shot, not trying again if he goes off the page or the letters are all different sizes, this then makes for a real hand done feel, and thats what i like, i like that nothings perfect because thats his filming style and its something i want to adopt and try and make my own. You can tell graphic design isn't what he's good at but he is meaning for it to be a hand rendered feel and it fits his work well.

ART AUCTION

Last week the year group hosted an art auction evening at 'the waiting room' in Colchester Queen street. The idea behind the evening was too raise funds to go towards our London show where we exhibit our work to businesses and many more later this year. We had meetings to arrange a job for everyone in the group and my job was to design the poster, which you can see above. The group decided, from seeing a piece of my photography work on the wall, that we would have the poster be an image with type over the top. My idea was to have a photograph of the waiting room from the outside and have type placed over the top, but this didn't look good in my opinion as the type was too lost in the photo, so i made it work by putting a smaller box over the top of the image and making the type transparent and the image having a slight blur, this then got rid of the problem and I'm happy with the final result. The gavel logo is in place to make the poster bolder and add an illustration touch to it.

The rest of the photos i took on my phone which shows the art going up on the day, the auction in full swing and Guy and Connor ending the night perfectly with their music.

All in all the night was a success with raising a great amount of funds for our show in London.
