For those out of the loop, England played Italy in the finals of the #Euro2020Final this past Sunday. With the score at 1-1 after 120 mins of play it went to penalty shots. Italy scored 3 of their 5 and England scored 2 of their 5. The three players that missed their penalties were aged 23 (Rashford), 21 (Sancho), and 19 (Saka). Following the game the three were subjected to racial abuse across all social media platforms. Personally, I was rooting for England in the final. I was upset as I was listening to the radio commentary. Yet, not a single ounce of me wanted to get on social media to hurl racial abuses at players who are almost 10 years younger than me. Penalties are harder than they look. And penalties in the finals where the expectations of your countrymen rests on your young shoulders is something I can’t say I’ve experienced. There is no room for racism anywhere. Be it sport, the workplace, or social media. It’s high time that social media platforms took a sterner stand against racial abuse. https://www.instagram.com/p/CRXJDa3jkKj/?utm_medium=tumblr
