Derby Statues Part 1: The Boy and The Goose

We begin a new photo series on a bit of a strange note, looking at a statue with a murky history and uncertain future.

Cast in bronze, The Boy and The Goose has somewhat of an identity crisis. Not least because it has been referred to by many names- The Boy and The Goose, The Boy and The Gander, Pan etc. But also because of its place, history and meaning.

The statue itself started life in 1926 in the Market Place before being moved to Riverside Gardens, then the Assembly Rooms before resting in it’s current position in Sir Peter Hilton Gardens. It’s first breath of life was as a drinking fountain before being moved to a flowerbed in 1971. The current placing makes it a blink and you’ll miss it gem.

Even the story behind the statue is shrouded with mystery. The original artist may be Alexander Fisher. Or it may be Andrew Fisher. The image it represents is simply a boy and a goose. It’s playful and full of movement but it is unclear whether it is representing a myth or prose. 

It certainly warrants a trip to the nearby Local Studies Library (located in Riverside Chambers) for any keen local historians but perhaps one should be quick as the potential relocation of the gardens have been the subject of debate since the nearby QUAD was constructed.
