He paused, “. . . But why?”

“You’re lucky does aren’t mine, however you should keep a better eye on your dog.”

“But he isn’t hurting anyone?”

Minah grinned at how adorable Gus is and rubbed his back as he wanted. “That is entirely your fault. I can’t get over how cute he is though. Can I keep him?” They asked as they crouched down to play with the dog. “Oh! Underwear! He stole someone’s underwear?”

“I accept that blame. It is unfortunate, but I can’t discipline him for my life. He does not seem to mind, misericordia.” Derek chuckled, pretending to think about it. “Whaddo you think, Gussy-Gus, want  a new owner?” Gus headbutted Derek’s legs. “The spoiled prince has spoken-- oh that’s the word. Fucking English.”

‘’He’s really cute, how old??’’

“He’s a rescue, so I don’t know exactly, but the vet guesses, like, four? Would you like to pet him?”

“Green lacy thing? Wait– you mean underwear? Lingerie? As a matter of fact, I do, but they’re not green. Who even goes for green? Hideous colour.”

“Yes-- but I try not to judge” he laughed. “The only others Gus brought back were purple, but that was weeks ago, we’ve given up on finding the owners of those.” He shook his head chidingly at his dog, who seemed unperturbed.

Smiling, Edward just shook his head. “Never mind it.” He waved his hand to swat the topic away. Though he shook the others hand. “Pleasures all mine.” He smiled.

Derek lifted the box again and handed i to the doctor. “You’ve left me curious, doctor,” he said, grinning. “You don’t have to sign for anything. You must have saved this patient’s life; they were very insistent on getting you something to show their gratitude.”

“Augustus, it’s a swell name. Like Augustus Caesar, or Augustus Gloop,” she laughed. “Theodoric, yeah? Do you have as cool of a name as that one?”

“Ceasar, I say. Theo says Gloop. I love that you just get the both of us.” Derek chuckled, a charming smile flashing across his face. “Nope, but mine is the longest name. Derek Mateo, and the three hyphenates, Henry-Reyes-Buchanan. Is a mouthful, no?”

Vik couldn’t contain her girlish squeal and laughter as Gus jumped into her lap, immediately giving into the dog afterward, using the tips of her fingers to scratch behind his cute doggy ears.  “You’re such a good boy, yes you are,” she cooed, letting the girlishness take over, though she would completely deny later that she had ever acted such a way.  “Someone with an almost inhuman amount of self-control, I would imagine, because how could you resist such an adorable face,” she replied, continuing to play with the dog, not minding that he had made her lap his current home.  “Me halaga, love.  How can I ever repay you for setting my mind at ease.”  She smiled sweetly at the nickname.  How they had met still amused her to this day.  Though, honestly, she was still half-convinced she had dreamed most of it.  “Got it.  If my underclothes go missing, don’t blame a pervert.  I’ll write that on a post it and put it on my fridge so I don’t forget it.”

Derek grinned, pleased she was enjoying herself, of course. Who wouldn’t? With handsome strangers and dogs about. “Do not encourage him, Vikoriya, he will think it is alright to go around taking other peoples things.” He looked on that day they first met fondly, for if she hadn’t hat that bad day that had lead to that drunken night, he would have never got the pleasure of meeting her and walking her home. Life was serendipitous that way, and here she was again curled up close to him. Now with Augustus to keep them both company. “It is impossible, scolding him. Trust me, I’ve tried. Is weird, yes? Because pugs and chihuahuas are everyone’s least favorite dogs, and yet I am in love with a pug anyway.” Gus barked his appreciation. Or perhaps he was barking to get rubbed more, it was hard to tell. “You can start locking your windows and doors to bar against pervert, both human and dog.” He answered, then laughed. “You are a riot, dear.”

“You aren’t missing any green lacy things are you?”

“Aw, that’s sweet. How long ago was that?” she chuckled, scratching the dog behind the ear. “I can’t imagine him skin and bones. What’s his name again?”

“Two and a half years,” he answered, petting Augustus affectionately. “Yes, it is strange to see old pictures of him, poor lamb chop. Augustus. Odd name for a dog, but my brother Theodoric named him, and Theodoric isn’t exactly a normal name.”

I didn’t have any alcohol for three months, which is a record for me. As an Englishman, beer is a big part of my life.

Kaitlyn laughed, reaching out and petting the pup. “He’s very cute. When’d you get him? I always wanted a dog, but I feel like I can barely take care of myself sometimes.”

“My baby brother found him padding around the alley behind our parent’s house. All skin and bones, then. Mama and Papa didn’t want to keep him, so Ted begged me to take care of him.” He shrugged, “I can’t say no to my little brother, but thankfully, I’m not a terrible dog owner. Gussy is fat and happy.”

“Yes, he is. He’s the cutest thing!” she replied. “Small clothes? Yeah, I don’t think that’s it.”

Gus butted his head into her hands, trying to coax a back rub out of her. “He is, but spoiled, oh is he spoiled. Aren’t you Gussy-Gus?” Derek looked up, then shrugged, plucking at his waistband. “Small-clothes? Underneath-pants?”

‘’What’s he called??’’

“Augustus! Gussy, Gus, Aggie, whatever, he is very smart and answers to just about all of those.”

“You should not be so easily fooled by a cute face.  They are not to be trusted, are they, Gus?” She reached out and petted the dog, grinning as she looked back at Derek.  “Cuties get away with everything– I should know, I am one.  Awh, do not call him creepy, you’ll hurt his feelings.  I feel better knowing that I can rest easy tonight and not have to worry about a panty-thieving neighbor.”

Gus squirmed harder at the mention of his name, flopped into her lap, and nudged her fingers with his head, trying aggressively to get her to scratch behind his ears. “ Si, pero it’s a super cute dog, who can say no? Who can resist?” He said, patting Gus and smiling affectionately at Viktoriya. “You certainly are, and you certainly can, hermosa desconocida.” Ah, their running joke. “Yes, do. And if any of your things do go missing, know it was a dog, and not a pervert.”
