HE LOOKS AROUND,  making sure she was actually talking to him before his arms crossed at his chest, brow raised.

          ‘‘ me ?  causing trouble ?  now what would cause you to think that ? ’’

“It’s that puppy dog face. You just know you can get whatever you want if you pout. That’s trouble enough.”

“well, i’ve got MUCH more than just a nice smile.” he allows the possibilities to sink in for a moment before he offers some reassurance that he isn’t a TOTAL creep. “like a really fast ship. and–” now, he’s frowning just a little. “a co-pilot that seems to have gone AWOL.” no, it’s really NOT like him to take his time. not unless–

“HEY. OVER HERE.” the arm he isn’t leaning on raises up to catch the giant furball’s attention as the wookie ambles around a corner. as soon as chewbacca gets in close enough range, han pinpoints exactly what took him so long. crumbs of his latest meal still being brushed from his mouth. “did you eat without me?” a confirming, satisfied growl followed by a tone of but i HAD to. sets the pilot in a fit. “chewie! i don’t CARE if it smelled good! i was WAITING for you and you–” deep breath. don’t lose it. “maybe I should leave YOU here.” 

he ignores the inquisitive grunt and re-focuses upon gemma. “i guess i will take you up on that offer. because SOMEONE,” a pointed, disgruntle look toward the wookie, “has no MANNERS.” 

The possibilities do quite a lot of sinking in, and her lips tug upwards into a slightly wider smile. Intriguing, the mention of the ship as well. Her chin comes to rest in the palm of her hand.  “My good fortune,”  she comments, before straightening up at Han’s shift in demeanor and position. She cranes her head a bit to see just who it is he’s gesturing to and her eyes widen slightly. That’s a Wookie. She’s seen a Wookie before, just once, and she doesn’t understand the language at all, but clearly this pilot does.

Their exchange is watched, and sort of listened to, with clear amusement. It’s a little hard for Gemma to stifle her laughter, actually. He’s arguing with something about twice his size -- that Wookie looks like he could tear Han apart if he really wanted to.

“Your good fortune there. I’ll have you know I make the best food this side of the rim.”  And she sets to work, her movements punctuated by the sound of sizzling and the sharp tang of spice in the air. Dark gaze glances up and at Chewie briefly.  “I’ll make enough for two. Just in case someone’s appetite returns.”

he’s seen a lot of different kinds of STRENGTH in his travels. amazing feats of flying, combat, tactical skills, manipulation, brute force– but there are some kinds that really stand out. KINDNESS is one, in particular, that seems to be in short supply these days. even most lifeforms that have the strength or smarts to offer benevolence and good will often don’t. to be able to do what she does without batting an eye– it’s a different kind of strength.

“well, if i was stranded here with you it might not be so bad.” body language shifts again and he leans in just a little closer– a tip of his weight into the arm resting upon the table between them. an easier smile. “camaraderie is just about dead these days, but it’s good to see not completely. my friend– the one i’m waiting for,” that reminds him; scan again– what is he doing? “is like that. loyal to the end, even if i don’t deserve it.” 

“Smile like that, who wouldn’t want to follow you to ends of the galaxy?”  It’s a little obvious he’s flirting, and Gemma’s content enough to play that game. Besides, he is saying all the right things. She can find value in someone who isn’t so quick to disregard the spirit of a helping hand. Even if I don’t deserve it. That’s an interesting tidbit. Is he humble, or realistic? It’s difficult to tell when she knows next to nothing about him.

The way he takes a look about the marketplace draws her attention. He’s got to be getting concerned about this friend of his. Han mentioned this friend might leave him behind if he ate without them, but she suspects that’s a bit of an exaggeration... or if it’s not, then why wouldn’t this friend be making a beeline for the food cart? She’s not getting a great feeling about this.  “They usually take their time, this friend of yours?”

“Been causing trouble? You’ve got a face that says trouble. Hesitant to sell you anything decent, frankly.”   Face is stern enough, but her tone’s far from it; more along the lines of warm, teasing.

The First Order doesn’t make Gemma nervous, not anymore -- angry, more like. But the sight of him gives her pause. Sends a little jolt of anxiety through her veins. People stop and stare as he passes, and she’s not immune to the urge. At least that helps her blend in with everyone else. Situations like this, these are exactly what she’s supposed to handle. The Resistance will want to know he’s here. All she needs to do is find out why. 

“You folks hungry, or do you not eat?”  Just a slight challenge; she can’t help it, even if she really should. But she can disguise it as an eager street vendor looking for some official endorsement.

he can ride on a drink– even pass her something for the trouble, since he’s very fond of keeping in good faith those that are willing to lend a hand. the offer of food, though, has him withdrawing just the slightest. his posture shifts ( straightens ) and his eyes slip to scan the surrounding area for a moment before returning to her.

“name’s han. thanks for the drink, but i should probably pass on the rest.” another pause to scan. “i’m just waiting on a friend, really, and if i eat without him. well–” a pause to chuckle ( good-natured ) at the thought. “he might take the ship and leave me here for good.” he’d come BACK, of course, but han only ever tends to make the kind of friends that are willing to see him suffer a little to learn a lesson. “you know, being TOO generous can really backfire. lots of people ready to take advantage of anyone they can.”

“Pleased to make your acquaintance, Han.”  She’ll have to remember the name. There’s this nagging feeling that she’s definitely going to see him again. He might not get wrapped up in their little rebellion, not directly, but one never knows who their allies might wind up being... or their enemies. Still, Gemma keeps an easy smile on her face, straightening up and shrugging her shoulders, entirely nonchalant.  “Wouldn’t that be a shame?”

His advice is heard, but it’s going to be left alone. Kind of him, trying to look out for a humble street vendor. But it’s entirely unnecessary.  “Thank you. But I know what I’m doin’. People’ve got to look out for one another in times like these. Places like this.”  And besides, he’s not the only one that’s armed. She’s got a blaster strapped right under her stall. Rebels always come prepared.

it’s dangerous, in han’s experience, to trust a stranger. at least– it’s dangerous for MOST people. but most people are also terrible judges of character, and he hasn’t made his way in the world by being a fool. he knows what jobs to take and which ones will end up with him just being screwed. and he can tell a mercenary sent by a vengeful, dissatisfied client from a fellow traveler looking to kill some time.

a small nod of thanks; acceptance of the bottle; a quick sniff and then– down the hatch! if he’s going to be taken out, at least it’ll be surrounded by booze and pretty ladies. really, what more can he ask for? “you got a name? or should i just thank the stars?”

“Name’s Gemma, but you can thank whoever you like.”  Charming, then. She supposes she should have expected that. He does seem a little bit hesitant to trust her -- fair enough. These days, trust is in short supply, as much as peace. Eyebrows raise a bit at the speed in which he finishes off that drink. Clearly no stranger to drinking, this one. 

Tall, dusty, and armed; if she had to guess, she might say he works in... transport. What exactly he transports, that’s his business, technically. But he might know a thing or two that could be more useful than he realizes.  “If you’re hungry as well, you’re at the right place.”

"You look like you need a drink. Don’t bother with the cantina. Got somethin’ better.”  A bottle is withdrawn from underneath the stall and set between them. He’s a stranger, and he looks like trouble, but he also looks like he’s seen trouble, and Gem’s heart bleeds just a bit much.

her name’s gemma auber

she’s thirty years old, born 5 aby

she’s from the outer rim, but she now travels; got her own ship, can fly it but pretty much nothing else, brings her cooking anywhere she needs to go

smuggles information for the resistance & has been known to offer shelter to resistance fighters or refugees 

maybe joins up with the resistance proper and works in the kitchens at some point?

she’s Really Good. just super strong moral compass
