번역 일을 하다 = work as a translator 시는 번역이 쉽지 않다 = Poetry is not easy to translate. 어떤 번역도 완벽할 수는 없다 = No translation is perfect. 그는 그 편지를 영어로 번역했다 = He translated the letter into English.

해석 = translation, interpretation (of both languages and other things such as actions, rules, situations etc., written work, has nuance of explaining the meaning of something)

이 문장을 해석해 주세요 = Please translate this sentence. 해석이 안 되면 사전을 찾아보세요 = Look up the dictionary if you have trouble translating. 이 문장은 두 가지 해석이 가능하다 = This sentence can have two different interpretations.

통역 = interpretation, translation (of languages, spoken not written)

동시통역 = simultaneous interpretation 통역 좀 해 주시겠어요? = Would you translate for me? 그는 통역 없이 미국인과 이야기했다 = He talked with an American without an interpreter. 그는 장관급 회담의 통역을 맡았다 = He worked as an interpreter for ministerial-level talks.

The O.G.s of Korea

One recent show I watched was Trauma Code (중증외상센터) - a bit extreme but fun in that typical K-drama kind of way. Throughout the show characters get nicknames, and one of those was 조폭, which was translated as Gangster. Now I’ve heard multiple words that were translated as “gangster”, but this was a new one for me, so I decided to break down the differences.

깡패 - A thug, rough & violent. More of an individual criminal than literal gang member.

양아치 - A bully, punk, generally called this more because of their behavior, not serious crime.

날라리 - A troublemaker, delinquent. Similar to 양아치, but a bit more carefree.

조폭 - An actual violent person with power, generally in organized crime (closest to actual “gangster”).

Example Sentences

"어제 밤에 왠 깡패들이 가게에 와서 없던 자리세를 내라고 하면서 다 때려 부수고 갔지 뭐야?"

"What the hell, last night some gangsters came by the store and demanded protection fees while destroying everything."

first "official" study day of 2025! switching between my KLEAR textbook and my routledge one, and working on the exercises in my new neuchturm notebook. i think the routledge textbook/workbook is doing a lot to improve my grammar, because it explains things that the KLEAR textbook assumes that you'll be picking up from a professor's lecture/explanations.

today's focus was sentence-final endings; the KLEAR textbook's section was on the assimilation of vowels when conjugating with the ~어요, which was very useful because i always forget the way assimilation rules play out. the routledge one was a focus on picking out stems in verbs and adjectives—something that's very easy for me—and the four "main" speech levels' sentence-final endings, which i am...far less practiced at, haha. (i default to the polite whenever i'm writing out responses to exercises unless otherwise indicated just because that's what the KLEAR textbook uses.)

i've also been really enjoying my newly-bought leuchturm notebook—it holds ink exactly as well as everyone claims, and i think it's very much worth the twenty-odd dollars i spent on it. i'm looking forward to using my fountain pen with it—my ballpoints are just about as wet, so i have high hopes!
