Cambodian teacher lights up world for blind students
āCambodians donāt like blind children because they think these kids have committed sins in their past life. So, parents often keep them at home. They donāt want anyone to know they have a blind child,ā Phalla said.
āI want them to have knowledge like normal students do. They have the right to education like other children. Thatās why I returned to Cambodia,ā the 56-year-old said. But there was no school for blind children in her country then.
Phalla became the first Braille teacher in Cambodia. She also helped Krousa Thmey open the first school for blind children in the country. It started out in Chbar Ampou with eight students and three teachers, all from refugee camps.
So I just recently got back from an amazing trip throughout Southeast Asia! The Apsara dancers of Cambodia were one of my favorite things.Ā

Two rare prehistoric species found in Chengdu paddy field
Two rare prehistoric creatures were found in the same paddy field in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, the first case of its kind in China, according to the Insect Museum of West China.
Zhao Li, director of the museum said on Sunday that they only found vernal pool tadpole shrimp, a rare species that is native to the United States, in Chengdu last year.
During a search of its habitats, researchers also found fairy shrimp, another prehistoric creature that is also rarely found in the wild.
The two creatures were known to have existed on earth for the past 200 million years.
Zhao said their findings show the evidence that the two species coexisted here many years ago, and the paddy field could prove to be a habitat for ancient creatures.
